WEBVTT 1 00:00:00.560 --> 00:00:03.919 Psalm seventy two. This listen, for this is the word of the Lord 2 00:00:06.280 --> 00:00:12.710 of Solomon. Give the king your justice, O God, and your righteousness 3 00:00:13.230 --> 00:00:18.949 to the Royal Sun. May He Judge Your people with righteousness and your poor 4 00:00:19.350 --> 00:00:24.739 with justice. Let the mountains bear prosperity for the people and the hills in 5 00:00:24.859 --> 00:00:28.820 righteousness. May he defend the cause of the poor, of the people, 6 00:00:29.420 --> 00:00:34.859 give deliverance to the children of the needy and crush the oppressor. May they 7 00:00:34.939 --> 00:00:39.570 fear you while the sun endures and as long as the moon, throughout all 8 00:00:39.729 --> 00:00:44.210 generations. May He be like rain that falls on the Moan Grass, like 9 00:00:44.409 --> 00:00:49.329 showers that water the earth. In his day, may the righteous flourish and 10 00:00:49.649 --> 00:00:54.920 peace abound till the moon be no more. May He have dominion from sea 11 00:00:55.000 --> 00:00:59.679 to sea and from the river to the ends of the Earth. May Desert 12 00:00:59.719 --> 00:01:03.120 tribes bow down before him and his enemies lick the dust. May the kings 13 00:01:03.200 --> 00:01:08.430 of tarshish and the coast lands render him tribute, May the Kings of Sheba 14 00:01:08.510 --> 00:01:14.390 and Seba bring gifts, may all kings fall down before him. All nations 15 00:01:14.670 --> 00:01:18.109 serve him, for he delivers the needy. When he calls the poor in 16 00:01:18.150 --> 00:01:21.299 him, who has no helper. He has pity on the weak and the 17 00:01:21.420 --> 00:01:26.340 needy and saves the lives of the needy from oppression and violence. He redeems 18 00:01:26.420 --> 00:01:32.180 their life and precious as their blood in his sight. Long may he live. 19 00:01:32.930 --> 00:01:36.489 May Gold of Sheba be given to him, may prayer be made for 20 00:01:36.530 --> 00:01:41.890 him continually and blessings invoked for him all the day. May there be abundance 21 00:01:41.969 --> 00:01:44.969 of grain in the land, on the tops of the mountains. May it 22 00:01:45.090 --> 00:01:49.480 wave, may its fruit be like Lebanon, may people blossom in the cities 23 00:01:49.799 --> 00:01:55.439 like the grass of the field. May His name endure forever, his fame 24 00:01:55.599 --> 00:02:00.040 continue as long as the sun. May people be blessed in him. All 25 00:02:00.120 --> 00:02:05.390 nations call him blessed. Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, 26 00:02:05.950 --> 00:02:12.189 who alone does wondrous things. Blessed be his glorious name forever. May the 27 00:02:12.310 --> 00:02:16.979 whole Earth be filled with his glory. Men and on men, the prayers 28 00:02:17.139 --> 00:02:23.979 of David, the son of Jesse are ended a's for the reading of God's 29 00:02:23.979 --> 00:02:31.610 word. May He blessed to us. Please be seated. What's evening. 30 00:02:31.610 --> 00:02:36.770 I want to do something that's perhaps a bit difference, may be a bit 31 00:02:36.770 --> 00:02:42.490 unusual, as we look to the seventy two psalm. I want us to 32 00:02:42.490 --> 00:02:46.560 begin not at the beginning, but here, at the end, with these 33 00:02:46.599 --> 00:02:51.280 words that we just heard. Rather than beginning at verse one, let's look 34 00:02:51.319 --> 00:02:59.629 at verses eighteen and nineteen. Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, 35 00:02:59.669 --> 00:03:02.069 who will alone does wondrous things. Blessed be his glorious name forever, 36 00:03:02.349 --> 00:03:08.710 may the whole Earth be filled with his glory. Men and men. The 37 00:03:08.750 --> 00:03:14.620 reason I want to look at this concluding line here first is because these verses 38 00:03:14.740 --> 00:03:21.580 here serve as something of a divider, a divider between the books that we 39 00:03:21.740 --> 00:03:27.810 find in the Book of Psalms. For what do you see in your bibles? 40 00:03:27.889 --> 00:03:36.449 Just below Psalm Seventy two, says book three. This is the final 41 00:03:36.610 --> 00:03:45.240 lines to the second book of the PSALTER. Imagine the Book of Psalms laid 42 00:03:45.280 --> 00:03:50.960 out on a bookshelf, and each book of the Psalms carries with it its 43 00:03:51.000 --> 00:03:54.870 own row. As you will well, the end of each book you find 44 00:03:54.990 --> 00:04:02.030 these book ends. Listen how book one concludes in Psalm Forty one. Blessed 45 00:04:02.189 --> 00:04:06.949 be the Lord the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting. Men and 46 00:04:08.150 --> 00:04:12.580 a men, both book three and book for when they conclude, they end 47 00:04:12.620 --> 00:04:16.100 in this similar phrasing of of blessed be the Lord, Amen and a men. 48 00:04:17.379 --> 00:04:23.779 And how does book five conclude? Not just with one line, but 49 00:04:23.899 --> 00:04:29.970 with five psalms of praise the Lord, praise the Lord. The reason I 50 00:04:30.009 --> 00:04:31.689 want to point this out to you here, first and foremost, it's not 51 00:04:31.769 --> 00:04:36.009 just because it's interesting. Perhaps not many of you think it is all that 52 00:04:36.129 --> 00:04:42.120 interesting. The reason I want to take note of these book ends is because 53 00:04:42.160 --> 00:04:46.439 not only do they divide the psalter into these five books, but they also 54 00:04:46.519 --> 00:04:53.910 unite these five books into one book. Here they serve as various way more 55 00:04:54.110 --> 00:04:59.750 away points, like on a map, and they direct us to this intentional 56 00:05:00.430 --> 00:05:04.829 direction that the each and every psalm follows. These books are organized in a 57 00:05:04.870 --> 00:05:10.180 specific way, that each book ends with this blessing to the Lord, that 58 00:05:10.300 --> 00:05:16.019 the entire Psalter ends with five psalms of praising to the Lord. Through these 59 00:05:16.180 --> 00:05:20.019 five books, the Lord is directing us to a goal, a singular goal, 60 00:05:20.139 --> 00:05:26.490 a singular purpose, for within the psalms you find many different emotions, 61 00:05:26.610 --> 00:05:30.329 many different expressions, but the reason that we're given us alters not just so 62 00:05:30.329 --> 00:05:33.170 that we would know how these people used to pray, how David used to 63 00:05:33.250 --> 00:05:36.439 pray, the things he used to say, how the priests used to pray 64 00:05:36.519 --> 00:05:42.319 to God, that we see many things in these psalms that are foreign to 65 00:05:42.519 --> 00:05:46.040 us, that we see much of the Old Testament Israel within its pages. 66 00:05:47.439 --> 00:05:51.750 We're also shown that our God is the same, so we can praise him 67 00:05:53.389 --> 00:05:59.029 with these words along with Old Testament believers. In fact, notice how similar 68 00:05:59.230 --> 00:06:05.100 these final verses, first nineteen is to the Lord's prayer. When Jesus taught 69 00:06:05.100 --> 00:06:10.060 US disciples to pray, he began his prayer saying, our father in heaven, 70 00:06:10.699 --> 00:06:15.500 hollow would be your name. Let's first nineteen say bless it be Your 71 00:06:15.579 --> 00:06:21.009 glory, his glorious name, forever and in Matthew Ten, your kingdom come, 72 00:06:21.089 --> 00:06:24.970 your will be done on earth as is in heaven. What does Verse 73 00:06:25.050 --> 00:06:29.089 Nineteen say? May the whole Earth be filled with his glory. Amen and 74 00:06:29.329 --> 00:06:34.879 Amen. That Jesus his own prayers, his own prayers, were shaped by 75 00:06:34.959 --> 00:06:41.079 the Psalms. I mean Christis at the center of all of these psalms, 76 00:06:41.120 --> 00:06:46.000 and yet he himself prayed these psalms. Like was in these psalms. We 77 00:06:46.160 --> 00:06:49.230 two are being taught when to pray, how to pray and and why to 78 00:06:49.350 --> 00:06:55.310 pray. And next thing I want to notice here at the end of Psalm 79 00:06:55.430 --> 00:07:00.069 seventy two is this final line in verse twenty. The prayers of David, 80 00:07:00.149 --> 00:07:08.660 the son of Jesse are ended. Now let's brings up another interesting question. 81 00:07:10.660 --> 00:07:16.209 Who wrote this psalm? If you don'tice how this Psalm begins, whose name 82 00:07:16.290 --> 00:07:25.649 appears at the beginning of Psalm Seventy two to say of Solomon, and you 83 00:07:25.730 --> 00:07:28.529 here at the end. It seems to indicate that the prayers of David, 84 00:07:28.610 --> 00:07:35.040 the son of Jesse are here ended with this psalm. So who wrote it? 85 00:07:38.519 --> 00:07:44.199 Perhaps a straightforward solution is to see that in the Hebrew the preposition translated 86 00:07:44.279 --> 00:07:50.550 as of Solomon could also be translated as for Solomon. Does it make sense 87 00:07:50.629 --> 00:07:57.550 that David would be praying for Solomon, especially in light of the finality that 88 00:07:57.629 --> 00:08:01.060 we hear in verse twenty. The prayers of David the son of Jesse are 89 00:08:01.420 --> 00:08:09.500 ended. If this is David's final psalm, I mean David has more psalms 90 00:08:09.540 --> 00:08:13.649 throughout the rest of the PSALTER, but this is the last one he wrote 91 00:08:13.810 --> 00:08:18.089 in his life. Makes Sense. On his deathbed, nearing the end of 92 00:08:18.170 --> 00:08:22.889 his life, where are his thoughts. Where are his prayers that therefore his 93 00:08:24.050 --> 00:08:28.560 son? If you're a parent, you can relate to David's concern. If 94 00:08:28.600 --> 00:08:33.120 you're a child, she'll you can relate to this fatherly care. Are My 95 00:08:33.200 --> 00:08:39.159 children going to be okay after I'm gone? Will my children be taken care 96 00:08:39.240 --> 00:08:41.789 of? Will they make the right choices if I'm not around to counsel them 97 00:08:43.750 --> 00:08:46.870 in it? Here in David's prayer we find a concern that's much more specific. 98 00:08:48.350 --> 00:08:54.429 He's not just praying for his son's health, financial decisions for his family. 99 00:08:54.590 --> 00:09:01.620 He's praying for a king. And Throughout these twenty verses, David's prayer 100 00:09:01.700 --> 00:09:07.139 can be summarized as these two main requests. First and verse one. Give 101 00:09:07.259 --> 00:09:11.529 the King Your Justice, Oh God, and your righteousness to the Royal Son. 102 00:09:13.450 --> 00:09:18.210 May He Judge Your people with righteousness and your pure poor with justice. 103 00:09:20.889 --> 00:09:22.809 And a second request is found in verse Ey. May He have dominion from 104 00:09:22.889 --> 00:09:28.519 sea to see, from the river to the ends of the Earth. As 105 00:09:28.519 --> 00:09:31.720 a reading verse eleven, May all kings fall down before him, all nations 106 00:09:33.480 --> 00:09:39.230 serve him. And throughout the Psalm, then we see this intersection between these 107 00:09:39.350 --> 00:09:43.669 two requests. David prayers praise for a king who would rule with justice, 108 00:09:43.710 --> 00:09:52.110 a king who would rule with righteousness over all the nations. And he defines 109 00:09:52.190 --> 00:09:54.779 this kind of rule, this kind of justice and this kind of righteousness as 110 00:09:56.500 --> 00:10:01.700 compassion. The King's righteousness, the king's justice, is not determined by the 111 00:10:01.059 --> 00:10:05.460 size of his military it's just not determined by the architecture of his palace, 112 00:10:09.129 --> 00:10:13.090 determined by his compassion and had by his love. He's to be a compassionate 113 00:10:13.129 --> 00:10:16.250 king who looks out for the poor, who looks out for the oppressed. 114 00:10:16.250 --> 00:10:20.409 May he defend the cause of the poor, of the people, give deliverance 115 00:10:20.450 --> 00:10:24.600 to the children of the needy and crush the oppressor. And again in verse 116 00:10:24.639 --> 00:10:28.039 twelve. For he delivers the needy, when he calls the poor and him 117 00:10:28.039 --> 00:10:31.639 who has no helper. He has pity on the weak and the needy, 118 00:10:33.279 --> 00:10:37.190 saves the lives of the needy from oppression and violence. He redeems their life 119 00:10:37.549 --> 00:10:43.629 and precious is their blood on his sight. When you look back on Israel's 120 00:10:43.629 --> 00:10:46.990 history, you'll see that this is the purpose for which the Lord first gave 121 00:10:48.029 --> 00:10:52.220 judges and first gave kings to Israel. Judges were raised up to deliver and 122 00:10:52.340 --> 00:10:58.259 to defend God's people. From oppression. Kings were given to rescue and save 123 00:10:58.700 --> 00:11:03.970 from the hands of their enemies. And his Justice and this righteousness is further 124 00:11:05.129 --> 00:11:11.769 connected to this king's universal kingdom. There's a connection in which the way in 125 00:11:11.809 --> 00:11:18.639 which this king rules and reigns is delivering to him in endless kingdom. May 126 00:11:18.759 --> 00:11:24.559 His name endure forever, verse Seventeen. His fame, what kind of fame? 127 00:11:24.639 --> 00:11:26.519 The fame of his justice, the fame of his righteousness. May His 128 00:11:26.639 --> 00:11:31.399 fame continue as long as the sun. May people be blessed in him and 129 00:11:33.389 --> 00:11:41.350 all nations call him blessed. The blessing that this king brings is to extend 130 00:11:41.389 --> 00:11:46.259 beyond the borders of Israel. And in these two basic requests, don't you 131 00:11:46.299 --> 00:11:52.539 see how this is a response to the dividict covenant, that the promise God 132 00:11:52.779 --> 00:11:56.620 gave to David and Second Samuel Chapter Seven, God gave Damis David a promise 133 00:11:56.980 --> 00:12:03.570 concerning a son who would be a king. God said, when your days 134 00:12:03.610 --> 00:12:07.450 are fulfilled and you lie down with your father's, I will raise up your 135 00:12:07.610 --> 00:12:11.289 offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish 136 00:12:11.330 --> 00:12:16.320 his kingdom. He shall build a house for my name and I will establish 137 00:12:16.399 --> 00:12:24.399 the throne of his kingdom for short time, no forever. And in the 138 00:12:24.480 --> 00:12:28.679 life of Solomon, in the life of David's son, you actually get a 139 00:12:28.799 --> 00:12:33.710 picture of these events. After all, wasn't Solomon who prayed for wisdom, 140 00:12:33.990 --> 00:12:41.470 but wisdom in order to do what, to judge the people with justice. 141 00:12:43.549 --> 00:12:48.860 God blessed him with insight and blessed him with understanding. David praise that the 142 00:12:48.860 --> 00:12:52.820 king's reign would bring peace and blessing. And First Kings, for tells us 143 00:12:52.820 --> 00:12:56.259 that Judah and Israel were as many as the sands by the sea. They 144 00:12:56.419 --> 00:13:03.850 ate and drank and were happy. And not only that, but didn't Solomon 145 00:13:03.929 --> 00:13:11.009 extend the boundaries of the Promised Land and his influence extended even to nations and 146 00:13:11.129 --> 00:13:15.679 kings and Queens? Solomon ruled over the kingdoms of the Euphrates, to the 147 00:13:15.720 --> 00:13:18.480 land of the Philistines, the border of Egypt. They brought tribute and served 148 00:13:18.559 --> 00:13:26.080 Solomon all the days of his life. An example of this is the queen 149 00:13:26.120 --> 00:13:28.909 of she but, who came to Jerusalem because of the reports she had heard 150 00:13:28.950 --> 00:13:35.309 about the wisdom of Solomon, about the prosperity of the land, and didn't 151 00:13:35.309 --> 00:13:41.740 she bring much gold as tribute to the king. So, in light of 152 00:13:41.779 --> 00:13:46.740 the Lord's promise of a son, a king who would reign forever, David 153 00:13:46.779 --> 00:13:50.460 here seems to be praying for this son who would be greater than himself. 154 00:13:50.179 --> 00:13:58.730 WHO said David isn't anticipating this greater son, this greater promised one? He 155 00:13:58.809 --> 00:14:03.409 sees that this is a promise that needs to be fulfilled at the end of 156 00:14:03.529 --> 00:14:05.730 his own life, at the end of his own reign, at the end 157 00:14:05.769 --> 00:14:09.320 of his rule, at the end of David's ministry, in his life. 158 00:14:11.759 --> 00:14:18.320 What is his hope here? What is his expectation? It's in the Christ 159 00:14:18.600 --> 00:14:26.230 it's in the anointed promised one. It's not inappropriate to envision David here on 160 00:14:26.350 --> 00:14:31.549 his deathbed, with these being his final words, that these are his final 161 00:14:31.590 --> 00:14:35.710 prayers. And where is his hope? Where is his expectation? Where is 162 00:14:35.830 --> 00:14:43.179 his confidence? It's in this reign of a perfect king. David is anticipating 163 00:14:43.220 --> 00:14:48.659 the reign of a king who reflects the very character of God. But as 164 00:14:48.659 --> 00:14:56.970 David is relying up pawn the promise of his God, you kind of have 165 00:14:58.090 --> 00:15:05.649 to wonder, what about the temple? Wasn't that integral to the promise God 166 00:15:05.889 --> 00:15:11.679 gave to David. Why doesn't David Pray for the building of the Temple? 167 00:15:11.720 --> 00:15:16.200 He prays for an Eternal Kingdom. And if that in fact that there's one 168 00:15:16.240 --> 00:15:22.350 thing you can say that Solomon literally fulfilled, shouldn't that be it? Solomon 169 00:15:22.429 --> 00:15:28.509 did build the temple. Wasn't the Divi? Wasn't God's promise to David that 170 00:15:28.870 --> 00:15:33.590 this son will build a house for my name and I will establish his throne 171 00:15:33.750 --> 00:15:39.059 forever? Is David only talking about the established throne that exdures forever? Why 172 00:15:39.100 --> 00:15:45.500 would David leave out the temple building of the Royal Sun? Well, he 173 00:15:45.580 --> 00:15:52.250 didn't. If David is describing the building of a temple, but it's not 174 00:15:52.289 --> 00:15:56.850 a temple with stones. The temple in Jerusalem was never meant to be the 175 00:15:58.009 --> 00:16:03.289 final or ultimate temple of the Lord. What David is concerned with is what 176 00:16:03.330 --> 00:16:07.559 the Lord was concerned with. Not Stones, but a temple of living stones. 177 00:16:07.960 --> 00:16:14.159 Notice David's concern for the people, that the people would be blessed by 178 00:16:14.240 --> 00:16:21.070 the rule of a faithful king. And as much as this prayer then points 179 00:16:21.110 --> 00:16:26.070 us to the life of Solomon, also points us away from Solomon just as 180 00:16:26.070 --> 00:16:34.220 quickly. So He is, though, he typified this righteous ruler in many 181 00:16:34.259 --> 00:16:41.620 ways, he also failed in many ways. Later in his life, Solomon 182 00:16:41.740 --> 00:16:45.740 turned from the Lord, following after the many idols of his concubines. After 183 00:16:45.860 --> 00:16:52.769 Solomon's death, his kingdom did not last. Rather, it was divided. 184 00:16:55.009 --> 00:16:59.409 Solomon could never be the one to fulfill what David is here requesting. In 185 00:16:59.529 --> 00:17:03.440 fact, look at how the prayer begins. Give your righteousness, give your 186 00:17:03.759 --> 00:17:07.720 justice to the king. David praise that the king would exhibit divine qualities. 187 00:17:07.759 --> 00:17:15.069 After all, it's the Lord himself who delivered captive Israel out of slavery in 188 00:17:15.230 --> 00:17:22.230 Egypt, the Lord who ultimately rules all of creation in true righteousness through his 189 00:17:22.349 --> 00:17:32.380 true justice. So it's perhaps once again return to that first question. Who 190 00:17:32.500 --> 00:17:37.819 is the human author here? Who wrote this? Was it David or was 191 00:17:37.859 --> 00:17:44.289 it Solomon? It's a very simplistic answer. I gave at the beginning that 192 00:17:44.369 --> 00:17:48.049 the Hebrew word could mean could go to dud it for two different ways, 193 00:17:48.130 --> 00:17:52.529 that this would be a prayer for Solomon or a prayer of Solomon. But 194 00:17:52.690 --> 00:17:59.920 all of David's other psalms have his name at the beginning. This one doesn't 195 00:17:59.920 --> 00:18:03.200 have David's name in it at all. It hence said it does Solomon's name 196 00:18:03.759 --> 00:18:07.920 at the front, so I think we should see that Solomon himself did have 197 00:18:08.039 --> 00:18:15.069 a hand in arranging this psalm. In fact, he's probably the one who 198 00:18:15.109 --> 00:18:19.309 added Verse Twenty to it. It's unlikely that David himself would know that this 199 00:18:19.470 --> 00:18:26.069 is his last psalm. Is An appropriate that his son would say the prayers 200 00:18:26.109 --> 00:18:33.539 of David the son of Jesse are ended, as it also describe why there's 201 00:18:33.579 --> 00:18:38.660 no mention and reference to a physical temple. If it's through Solomon, the 202 00:18:38.779 --> 00:18:44.970 temple's already been built when he'd have written this. So we can see this 203 00:18:45.089 --> 00:18:48.009 not simply as a prayer for Solomon himself but also a prayer of Solomon, 204 00:18:49.369 --> 00:18:55.369 not just David's prayer for his son, but also a Solomon's prayer for his 205 00:18:55.960 --> 00:19:02.319 son. And if we're directed to look to David's greater son, and even 206 00:19:02.359 --> 00:19:07.920 though we find some fulfillment in Solomon, as we see this as a further 207 00:19:07.519 --> 00:19:19.109 repetition by Solomon himself, aren't we expecting that future greater fulfillment? Isn't? 208 00:19:19.150 --> 00:19:23.779 It doesn't give it that much further anticipation, for he's the only when we 209 00:19:23.859 --> 00:19:29.299 see this psalm is directing us to both David and to Solomon's greater son do 210 00:19:29.380 --> 00:19:36.299 we see the true fulfillment that we find in Christ, as Zachariah announces this 211 00:19:36.500 --> 00:19:41.769 king who would rule in righteousness. Zachariah nine, verse nine, says, 212 00:19:41.849 --> 00:19:44.930 rejoice greatly, O, Daughter of Zion, shout aloud, O, daughter 213 00:19:45.009 --> 00:19:48.970 of Jerusalem. Behold, your king is coming to you righteous and having salvation, 214 00:19:49.009 --> 00:19:52.400 as he humble and mounted on a donkey, on a cult the foal 215 00:19:52.519 --> 00:19:56.759 of a donkey, I will cut out the off the chariot from Ephriam and 216 00:19:56.880 --> 00:20:00.599 the war horse from Jerusalem, and the battle bow shall be cut off, 217 00:20:00.880 --> 00:20:06.359 and he shall speak peace to the nation's his rule shall be from sea to 218 00:20:06.480 --> 00:20:10.789 sea, from the river to the ends of the Earth. The same kind 219 00:20:10.829 --> 00:20:15.109 of request you see here is told to us to in the coming of Jesus 220 00:20:15.150 --> 00:20:19.869 Christ. We see in Christ first coming that the king who rules in righteousness 221 00:20:19.910 --> 00:20:26.779 and injustice. The Gospel of Christ is good news to the poor because of 222 00:20:26.819 --> 00:20:30.099 how he delivers from oppression. In Matthew Eleven, Jesus answered them. Go 223 00:20:30.299 --> 00:20:33.099 Tell John what you see and hear. The blind received their sight, the 224 00:20:33.180 --> 00:20:37.089 lame walk lepers are cleansed. The deaf here and the dead are raised up 225 00:20:37.650 --> 00:20:45.569 and the poor have the good news preached to them. For in Christ's life 226 00:20:45.569 --> 00:20:51.240 we see the true righteousness of our true king, who declares, after his 227 00:20:51.359 --> 00:20:56.319 resurrection, All Authority in Heaven and on Earth has been given to me. 228 00:20:59.880 --> 00:21:03.950 So Christ is the answer to this psalm. Christ is the answer to David's 229 00:21:03.950 --> 00:21:12.390 anticipation, to Solomon's anticipation. This is a prayer of the king, then, 230 00:21:12.509 --> 00:21:18.150 for the reign of the future king. How can this be a prayer 231 00:21:18.859 --> 00:21:26.099 for us as we stand in light of the victory of this king, the 232 00:21:26.259 --> 00:21:32.970 arrival of his eternal kingdom? Can't we sing and pray this psalm with that 233 00:21:33.089 --> 00:21:38.329 much more confidence, with that much more assurance? For Look at what we're 234 00:21:38.369 --> 00:21:44.690 doing today, look what we're doing here and now, in Tucson of all 235 00:21:44.730 --> 00:21:48.839 places. What is verse seventeen say? May His name endure forever, his 236 00:21:49.079 --> 00:21:52.799 fame continue as long as the sun, may people be blessed in him. 237 00:21:53.839 --> 00:22:03.349 All nations call him blest. Here we are in the desert, blessing the 238 00:22:03.430 --> 00:22:08.869 name of the Lord. So not only is Christ and his life and death 239 00:22:08.990 --> 00:22:15.980 and resurrection and answer to David and Solomon's kingly prayer, but as our Lord 240 00:22:17.059 --> 00:22:22.539 continues to gather a people for himself, from among the nations. You too 241 00:22:22.700 --> 00:22:30.049 are an answer to David's prayer, to Solomon's prayer, for ultimately, this 242 00:22:30.170 --> 00:22:33.369 is not just the prayer of David, nor is it ultimately just the prayer 243 00:22:33.369 --> 00:22:38.170 of Solomon. This is ultimately the prayer of your king, Jesus, the 244 00:22:38.289 --> 00:22:45.880 final royal son. For this reveals not only his desire for you and I 245 00:22:45.079 --> 00:22:48.960 to bless his name, it reveals his purpose. It reveals his very plan 246 00:22:49.920 --> 00:22:57.869 to gather worshippers through his own righteous life, through his own defense of the 247 00:22:57.990 --> 00:23:04.390 poor and needy, by paying the price that we could never pray, by 248 00:23:04.470 --> 00:23:12.859 paying the price for our sin, by earning an eternal kingdom. So that 249 00:23:12.980 --> 00:23:18.500 is verse Nineteen says. Blessed be his glorious name forever, may the whole 250 00:23:18.539 --> 00:23:26.059 Earth be filled with his glory. Men and men, Lord is faithful. 251 00:23:26.940 --> 00:23:32.930 Your Lord desires the fulfillment of this psalm far greater than you or I ever 252 00:23:33.049 --> 00:23:37.730 could, and he is at work bringing it about. So let us continue 253 00:23:37.809 --> 00:23:45.119 to sing his praises forever. Man and man, let's pray
