WEBVTT 1 00:00:01.760 --> 00:00:06.599 Well, please remain standing, and let's turn our attention to first chronicles eighteen, 2 00:00:06.919 --> 00:00:17.030 and here God's word from this chapter. First Chronicles, Chapter Eighteen. 3 00:00:17.109 --> 00:00:24.100 Let's give our attention to God's word and here it in faith. After this, 4 00:00:24.460 --> 00:00:29.179 David defeated the Philistines and subdued them, and he took gath and its 5 00:00:29.260 --> 00:00:33.740 villages out of the hands of the Philistines, and he defeated Moab, and 6 00:00:33.780 --> 00:00:40.369 the Moabites became servants to David and brought tribute. David also feeded Hotta desert 7 00:00:40.770 --> 00:00:46.090 king of Zobahamath as he went to set up his monument at the River Euphrates, 8 00:00:47.049 --> 00:00:52.039 and David took from him a thousand chariots, seven thousand horsemen and twenty 9 00:00:52.119 --> 00:00:57.719 thousand foot soldiers. And David Hamstrung all the chariot horses but left enough for 10 00:00:57.799 --> 00:01:03.000 a hundred chariots. And when the Syrians of Damascus came to help Hotta Desert 11 00:01:03.000 --> 00:01:07.629 King of Zoba, David Struck down twenty twozero men of the Syrians. Then 12 00:01:07.670 --> 00:01:14.390 David put garrisons in Syria of Damascus, and the Syrians became servants to David 13 00:01:14.430 --> 00:01:19.819 and brought tribute, and the Lord gave victory to David wherever he went. 14 00:01:19.980 --> 00:01:23.299 And David took the shields of gold that were carried by the servants of Hotta 15 00:01:23.379 --> 00:01:30.540 desert and brought them to Jerusalem and from Tib half and from and Kuhn cities 16 00:01:30.579 --> 00:01:36.010 of Hatta desert. David took a large amount of bronze with it solemn and 17 00:01:36.090 --> 00:01:41.329 made the bronze sea and the pillars and the vessels of bronze. When to 18 00:01:41.689 --> 00:01:45.530 King of Hamath heard that David had defeated the whole army of Hotta desert, 19 00:01:45.569 --> 00:01:51.400 King of Zoba, he sent his son Hadur am to King David to ask 20 00:01:51.480 --> 00:01:55.120 about his health and to bless him because he had fought against Hatta Desert and 21 00:01:55.200 --> 00:02:00.680 defeated him, for Auda desert had often been at war with two and he 22 00:02:00.799 --> 00:02:05.269 sent all sorts of articles of gold and silver and of bronze. These also, 23 00:02:05.349 --> 00:02:08.710 King David dedicated to the Lord, together with the silver and gold that 24 00:02:08.789 --> 00:02:14.830 he had carried off from all the nations, from Edom Moab, the AMMONITES, 25 00:02:14.870 --> 00:02:20.340 the Philistines and Amelech and Abishai, the son of Zeruiah, killed eighteen 26 00:02:20.460 --> 00:02:23.620 thousand Edomites in the Valley of salt. Then he put garrisons in Edom and 27 00:02:23.740 --> 00:02:28.819 all the en of the Edomites became David Servants, and the Lord gave victory 28 00:02:28.939 --> 00:02:34.770 to David wherever he went. So David reigned over all Israel and he administered 29 00:02:34.849 --> 00:02:38.689 justice and equity to all his people. And Joe AB, the son of 30 00:02:38.729 --> 00:02:44.360 Zeruiah, was over the army and Jehosaphat the son of Ahilud, was recorder, 31 00:02:44.800 --> 00:02:47.800 and Zadok the son of Ahitub, and Ahimelech the son of Abbiathar were 32 00:02:47.879 --> 00:02:53.759 priests, and Shavsha was secretary, and Ben and Iya, the son of 33 00:02:53.759 --> 00:02:58.750 Jehoiadah, was over the cherithites and the Pelaphites, and David's sons were the 34 00:02:58.750 --> 00:03:20.780 chief officials in the service of the king. You may be seated. Well, 35 00:03:20.860 --> 00:03:23.780 these next three chapters and chapters eighteen, nineteen and twenty, we have 36 00:03:23.979 --> 00:03:30.689 this story for us, this account of David's conquests. David is fighting battles, 37 00:03:31.129 --> 00:03:37.729 men are dying, blood is being spilled. There are very graphic things 38 00:03:37.810 --> 00:03:43.000 going on here as well. For example, maybe you don't know what it 39 00:03:43.159 --> 00:03:47.280 means to ham string a horse. It basically means to cut the what would 40 00:03:47.319 --> 00:03:52.680 be the equivalent of the Achilles Tendon on a horse so that the horse can't 41 00:03:52.759 --> 00:03:59.270 walk. David finds himself in this situation where he's got all of these horses, 42 00:04:00.150 --> 00:04:01.710 doesn't have a need for them, doesn't want them to go into the 43 00:04:01.789 --> 00:04:05.909 hands of his enemies, and so he hamstrings them, leaving enough for a 44 00:04:05.949 --> 00:04:13.020 hundred chariots. We have these great numbers of people being taken or killed. 45 00:04:13.900 --> 00:04:18.899 Twenty thous and property to a thousand chariot, seven thousand horsemen, Twentyzero foot 46 00:04:18.980 --> 00:04:25.610 soldiers. These are huge numbers, huge numbers of people David struck down. 47 00:04:25.649 --> 00:04:30.850 We read in Verse Twenty Two thousand men of the Syrians under his leadership. 48 00:04:30.930 --> 00:04:34.250 In Verse Twelve, Abbey Shy, the son of Zariah, killed eighteen thousand 49 00:04:34.290 --> 00:04:41.360 Edomites in the Valley of salt. David is a man of war, David 50 00:04:41.439 --> 00:04:48.160 is going to battle, David is winning. These conquests that David has here 51 00:04:48.720 --> 00:04:55.029 would not last forever, though. David is not just a bloodthirsty man. 52 00:04:55.269 --> 00:05:02.470 He is doing the Lord's work in establishing peace. That's the ultimate goal, 53 00:05:03.310 --> 00:05:06.620 is that David is going in, as God has called him to do, 54 00:05:08.139 --> 00:05:13.740 to clear out the land and establish a place where his people were God's people, 55 00:05:14.379 --> 00:05:20.490 can dwell in peace. It's ultimately not war that God wants, it's 56 00:05:20.610 --> 00:05:29.810 peace. But to get there war must happen, because these are the enemies 57 00:05:29.889 --> 00:05:34.129 of God and they have been for a long time. I won't trace for 58 00:05:34.250 --> 00:05:39.600 you, and I can't in some instances, the histories of all these people, 59 00:05:39.680 --> 00:05:44.120 but we know, I'm from Genesis and you're early on, that there 60 00:05:44.160 --> 00:05:48.839 are these. There many people's made by God, called by God, who 61 00:05:48.920 --> 00:05:55.670 refuse to serve God, refuse to obey him. In many ways, the 62 00:05:55.750 --> 00:06:00.310 Israel it's would have been right among these people, had not something happened that 63 00:06:00.430 --> 00:06:05.100 God went to Abraham, called him out and said, I will establish for 64 00:06:05.180 --> 00:06:11.019 you a people, I will make you a family and a nation grade and 65 00:06:11.060 --> 00:06:15.060 I will put you into a land. And this is the people that God 66 00:06:15.180 --> 00:06:20.449 has saved and is saving, and he wants for them even as he wants 67 00:06:20.569 --> 00:06:29.850 for US peace, not war, but peace. But in order for us 68 00:06:29.889 --> 00:06:32.720 to have peace, in order for the it like it was for the Israelites, 69 00:06:32.800 --> 00:06:38.079 to have peace, certain enemies had to be defeated. You don't have 70 00:06:38.360 --> 00:06:42.240 peace when, in your own heart, when there's sin fighting against you. 71 00:06:42.319 --> 00:06:46.279 You don't have peace when there's a looming threat of debt. You don't have 72 00:06:46.439 --> 00:06:57.029 peace when Satan and his demons and unclean spirits are attacking. God wants peace 73 00:06:57.269 --> 00:07:00.860 for his people and this is a story about God's securing peace. Yes, 74 00:07:00.980 --> 00:07:06.779 these are David's conquests, but we read several times that it was the Lord 75 00:07:06.819 --> 00:07:15.089 Jehovah who gave victory to David wherever he went. What a wonderful phrase. 76 00:07:15.769 --> 00:07:21.689 The Lord gave victory to David wherever he went. And you see that as 77 00:07:21.730 --> 00:07:28.649 you go through this passage you see this great record, this great record of 78 00:07:28.970 --> 00:07:33.360 what God is doing, and I want to think about that record with you 79 00:07:33.519 --> 00:07:39.120 this evening. I'm think about the record and just what it says and what's 80 00:07:39.160 --> 00:07:43.519 going on, and then, second see it as something that's more than a 81 00:07:43.680 --> 00:07:48.870 record, as more than just a catalog of things that happened, but really 82 00:07:48.910 --> 00:07:56.790 a particular record of God's faithfulness, and then finally, consider how these things 83 00:07:57.110 --> 00:08:03.300 tell us about the future. So first thing we want to consider is this 84 00:08:03.779 --> 00:08:09.660 catalog or this record of conquest. What we see here, to sort of 85 00:08:09.699 --> 00:08:16.490 give you the bottom line, is that David does this sweep across the country 86 00:08:18.329 --> 00:08:24.449 north, southeast and West. His enemies are defeated on every front everywhere he 87 00:08:24.569 --> 00:08:28.800 goes and whenever he is I'm confronted. Whenever he is attacked. He either 88 00:08:28.920 --> 00:08:33.120 defeats the people and brings them into service. As we read in the first 89 00:08:33.120 --> 00:08:39.080 verse, David defeated the Philistines and subdued them. He took gath and its 90 00:08:39.159 --> 00:08:43.549 villages out of the hand of the Philistines and now they belonged to him, 91 00:08:43.590 --> 00:08:50.750 or he defeats them and they remain in the land and they remain somewhat independent, 92 00:08:52.230 --> 00:08:56.940 but they're required to bring what is called tribute. I'm perhaps that seems 93 00:08:56.980 --> 00:09:00.500 a little bit of an odd phrase, but it basically works like this. 94 00:09:00.980 --> 00:09:07.019 If a conquering king comes over and takes your country away from you, perhaps 95 00:09:07.220 --> 00:09:11.649 various things can happen. One option is he can evacuate the government, either 96 00:09:11.730 --> 00:09:18.769 by kicking you out, exiling you, killing you gone. The leadership entirely 97 00:09:18.929 --> 00:09:22.529 gone, and now the land, the city's the people all belong to the 98 00:09:22.769 --> 00:09:28.679 conquering king. Their disadvantages to that. Sometimes, though, now you have 99 00:09:28.720 --> 00:09:33.399 to have a new government, you have to install new things and various they're 100 00:09:33.399 --> 00:09:37.039 various political things going on. This passage of scripture doesn't get into all of 101 00:09:37.159 --> 00:09:41.029 that, but behind that used to have this word tribute, which means that, 102 00:09:41.070 --> 00:09:46.429 as a way to show of the this the the conquered country, to 103 00:09:46.669 --> 00:09:52.860 show that it is truly in allegiance and owes on or to the conquering king, 104 00:09:52.500 --> 00:09:58.980 tribute is brought. And so we read in Verse Two that he defeated 105 00:09:58.059 --> 00:10:05.139 Moab and the Moabites became servants to David and brought tribute. They would bring 106 00:10:05.179 --> 00:10:11.809 gifts, gold, slaves, chariots, horses, all kinds of different things 107 00:10:11.850 --> 00:10:16.529 might be brought as a way to say you're the boss, you're in charge 108 00:10:16.570 --> 00:10:20.129 here, you go one way. We see that there with the Moabites, 109 00:10:20.129 --> 00:10:24.200 and then we see it again later in the chapter. David has this big 110 00:10:24.399 --> 00:10:31.440 battle with something of a small empire, and we read that of this Hata 111 00:10:31.559 --> 00:10:37.110 Desert in verse five. And when the Syrians of Damascus came to help, 112 00:10:37.230 --> 00:10:43.110 had a desert king of Zoba. David struck down twenty two thousand men of 113 00:10:43.190 --> 00:10:46.389 the Syrians. So there's this king a hat a desert who comes up to 114 00:10:46.830 --> 00:10:50.539 fight David all the way up. If you look at a map in the 115 00:10:50.620 --> 00:10:54.740 back of your Bible, you'll see that the Euphrates river is quite a distance 116 00:10:54.820 --> 00:11:00.220 away from Israel and he goes up there and they have this battle. And 117 00:11:00.299 --> 00:11:03.779 when this man, when this king, starts to lose, then this other 118 00:11:03.940 --> 00:11:09.090 region, this of from Syria, they come to to help out, and 119 00:11:09.210 --> 00:11:15.210 then David defeats them too. And then what happens? Well, someone who 120 00:11:15.210 --> 00:11:18.399 had been war at them, who's this toe. It's very happy about all 121 00:11:18.440 --> 00:11:24.000 of this. Imagine having your enemy always at your back, breathing down your 122 00:11:24.080 --> 00:11:28.120 neck, and now finally he's gone. But of course, who do you 123 00:11:28.200 --> 00:11:31.799 have to worry about now? Well, you have to worry about David. 124 00:11:31.909 --> 00:11:37.509 So what does this man do? Toe King of Hamath. We read in 125 00:11:37.590 --> 00:11:41.909 Verse Nine that when Toe King of Hamath heard that David had defeated the whole 126 00:11:41.990 --> 00:11:48.139 army of Hata, Desert King of Zoba, he sent his son Hot Ram 127 00:11:48.580 --> 00:11:54.980 to King David to ask about his health. Right, hi, it's me, 128 00:11:56.379 --> 00:11:58.620 the son of a king over there, and I really want to know 129 00:11:58.740 --> 00:12:01.769 how you're doing, and I in fact, I'd also like to bless you, 130 00:12:01.250 --> 00:12:05.769 because you fought against this enemy of ours. And, by the way, 131 00:12:05.809 --> 00:12:07.610 I've brought with me. This is verse ten, all sorts of articles 132 00:12:07.649 --> 00:12:16.600 of gold and silver and bronze. This is groveling right this is coming to 133 00:12:16.759 --> 00:12:22.200 a conquering king and saying, leave us alone, we're not going to attack 134 00:12:22.279 --> 00:12:24.480 you, we're not going to bother you. You've defeated our enemy and we 135 00:12:24.600 --> 00:12:28.600 are very happy. We will do what you want. We are in service 136 00:12:30.149 --> 00:12:37.909 to you. Peace, right measure of peace. This conquest is bringing really 137 00:12:39.309 --> 00:12:43.580 great things, for Israel, of course in particular, but also to the 138 00:12:43.740 --> 00:12:48.500 friends of Israel, those that are willing to see what a god is doing 139 00:12:48.980 --> 00:12:56.220 and bow down before him. So this is the record of God's faithfulness. 140 00:12:56.779 --> 00:13:01.169 Just one other thing to include is the last few verses in versus a, 141 00:13:01.409 --> 00:13:07.289 fourteen through seventeen. This catalog of David's conquests here in chapter eighteen, ends 142 00:13:07.330 --> 00:13:13.720 with some details about his administration. I don't have much to say here, 143 00:13:13.759 --> 00:13:20.720 except that now that we see this conquest happening, we also see not only 144 00:13:20.879 --> 00:13:26.269 in an order at the borders, but also order internally. David sons serving 145 00:13:26.350 --> 00:13:31.549 as chief officials, various important people taking over control of the army, a 146 00:13:33.230 --> 00:13:39.990 recorder, a secretary, I'm these important government positions are being carried out and 147 00:13:39.149 --> 00:13:43.460 being done. In other words, we don't just have a king, but 148 00:13:43.580 --> 00:13:50.299 we have a government and orderliness and function and this government so importantly, is 149 00:13:50.340 --> 00:13:58.090 characterized in verse fourteen by these words. David reigned over all Israel and he 150 00:13:58.169 --> 00:14:05.529 administered justice and equity to all his people. How do you like to live 151 00:14:05.570 --> 00:14:11.320 in a kingdom like that, with a King like that? This our good 152 00:14:11.600 --> 00:14:18.159 times in Israel. They're defeating their enemies, a piece is being established in 153 00:14:18.240 --> 00:14:22.559 their land, their king is reigning over them and he's doing it with justice 154 00:14:24.950 --> 00:14:28.629 and with equity. So this is the first point. These as is the 155 00:14:28.750 --> 00:14:37.350 catalog, the record of David's conquests, but as I've hinted at already, 156 00:14:37.470 --> 00:14:41.179 this is also the record of God's conquests, or we might put it this 157 00:14:41.340 --> 00:14:46.500 way. We not only have a this record here, but we have a 158 00:14:46.580 --> 00:14:54.529 record of faithfulness. It's significant that chapter eighteen follows chapter seventeen, and not 159 00:14:54.690 --> 00:14:58.450 just because that's how numbers work, but they're put. It's put in this 160 00:14:58.570 --> 00:15:07.159 particular place for a particular reason. What we have here are the promises of 161 00:15:07.320 --> 00:15:13.080 God being fulfilled. If this was just a catalog of victories, it might 162 00:15:13.159 --> 00:15:18.600 actually be a fairly boring chapter. Maybe it even struck you that way when 163 00:15:18.600 --> 00:15:22.389 I read it. There's this king and that king and this number of things 164 00:15:22.389 --> 00:15:26.470 were defeated or people were defeated. This number of things were taken and on 165 00:15:26.590 --> 00:15:31.870 and on, one until the end. But it has a life to it 166 00:15:31.110 --> 00:15:41.340 beyond just a record of conquests and administrative policy and a government, because it's 167 00:15:41.379 --> 00:15:46.820 connected with chapter seventeen. It is a record, but of God's faithfulness. 168 00:15:48.740 --> 00:15:54.450 Do you remember what he said to David? For example, in verse nine 169 00:15:54.649 --> 00:15:58.970 of Chapter Seventeen, he promised David, I will appoint a place for my 170 00:15:58.169 --> 00:16:03.879 people Israel, and I will plant them that they may dwell in their own 171 00:16:04.000 --> 00:16:12.480 place and be disturbed. No more peace and violent men shall waste them no 172 00:16:12.679 --> 00:16:17.720 more. As formally, from the time that I appointed the judges over my 173 00:16:17.919 --> 00:16:23.750 people, Israel, I will subdue all your enemies. This is what God 174 00:16:25.629 --> 00:16:33.779 promised to David. God makes a promise in Chapter Seventeen and God fulfills a 175 00:16:33.899 --> 00:16:37.580 promise in chapter eighteen. You see what I mean, then, when I 176 00:16:37.620 --> 00:16:42.740 say this isn't just a record of conquests, it's a record of faithfulness, 177 00:16:44.340 --> 00:16:51.970 of God's faithfulness. This easy. These are God's answers to his promises, 178 00:16:52.490 --> 00:16:56.809 the fulfillment of those things. So we have this record and we have a 179 00:16:56.929 --> 00:17:02.159 record of faithfulness. But we also have something here that tells us about the 180 00:17:02.279 --> 00:17:08.039 future. There are other things that God promised, are there not? In 181 00:17:08.680 --> 00:17:14.799 first chronicles seventeen, he didn't only promise that he would plant Israel in the 182 00:17:14.839 --> 00:17:19.430 land, that he would subdue their enemies, that they wouldn't be disturbed by 183 00:17:19.509 --> 00:17:26.190 violence anymore, but he also says in verse seven or verse eleven of Chapter 184 00:17:26.349 --> 00:17:32.019 Seventeen, that when your days are fulfilled, to walk with your father's, 185 00:17:32.619 --> 00:17:36.660 I will raise up your offspring after you, one of your own sons, 186 00:17:37.259 --> 00:17:41.940 and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for me and 187 00:17:41.019 --> 00:17:51.490 I will establish his throne forever. God promises to David a future not just 188 00:17:51.730 --> 00:17:55.730 with him having, you know, a great run is king, but as 189 00:17:55.809 --> 00:18:02.359 establishing, through one of his sons, a kingdom that would last forever. 190 00:18:03.279 --> 00:18:07.559 When you think about the things that are going on here, this is very, 191 00:18:07.640 --> 00:18:12.150 very significant. What we see, then, is that God desires to 192 00:18:12.269 --> 00:18:18.470 establish a much more a kingdom that is much greater than just up to the 193 00:18:18.509 --> 00:18:25.509 River Euphrates or down south or east or west. Listen to this prophecy in 194 00:18:25.549 --> 00:18:33.099 Zachariah, chapter nine, versus nine and ten. Rejoice greatly, O Daughter 195 00:18:33.220 --> 00:18:37.500 of Zion, shall allowed O, daughter of Jerusalem. Behold, your king 196 00:18:37.700 --> 00:18:44.450 is coming to you, righteous and having salvation. Is He humble and mounted 197 00:18:44.529 --> 00:18:48.650 on a donkey, on a cult, the full of a donkey? Now 198 00:18:48.769 --> 00:18:53.250 you recognize that phrase right. This is refers is a prophecy that is fulfilled 199 00:18:53.289 --> 00:19:02.559 when Jesus enters into Jerusalem as king before His crucifixion, humble, mounted on 200 00:19:02.640 --> 00:19:04.039 a donkey, on a cult, the full of a donkey. Behold, 201 00:19:04.079 --> 00:19:10.549 your king is coming. What King? Well, the king they were expecting 202 00:19:10.589 --> 00:19:15.150 from first chronicle seventeen, the king that God had promised to David, the 203 00:19:15.309 --> 00:19:21.910 son who would establish a throne forever. Now listen again to the next verse. 204 00:19:22.589 --> 00:19:26.900 I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim and the war horse for Jerusalem 205 00:19:27.339 --> 00:19:33.819 and the battle boat shall be cut off, and he shall speak peace to 206 00:19:33.940 --> 00:19:38.130 the nation's his rule shall be from sea to see and from the river, 207 00:19:40.049 --> 00:19:45.690 which most likely refers to the Euphrates River, and from the river to the 208 00:19:45.089 --> 00:19:52.130 ends of the Earth. See what God has in mind for this kingdom that 209 00:19:52.210 --> 00:19:56.839 he's establishing through David. He's not having in mind just a small piece of 210 00:19:57.039 --> 00:20:04.759 territory in the Middle East. God wants to establish global rule cosmic rule. 211 00:20:06.200 --> 00:20:12.349 And so when Jesus says to his disciples, all heaven, in all authority 212 00:20:12.509 --> 00:20:18.910 in Heaven and on Earth has been given to me, we hear a king 213 00:20:18.190 --> 00:20:25.940 talking right and he says go to the ends of the earth, teaching, 214 00:20:26.180 --> 00:20:30.059 making disciples, baptizing people in the name of the father, the son and 215 00:20:30.220 --> 00:20:34.099 the Holy Spirit. So this is why I say when we have when we 216 00:20:34.460 --> 00:20:41.410 hear these conquests of David and first first chronicles eighteen, we don't have to 217 00:20:41.450 --> 00:20:45.410 have a record of conquests, we don't even have just a record of God's 218 00:20:45.410 --> 00:20:52.519 faithfulness. But we also have this foreshadowing, this promise of a future. 219 00:20:53.839 --> 00:20:59.880 God is already beginning to fulfill his promises to David. And just as God 220 00:21:00.000 --> 00:21:04.829 Day get adjust, as God gave David Victory, he would also give him 221 00:21:04.829 --> 00:21:15.910 a son whose own victories would surpass even David's by establishing peace forever, even 222 00:21:15.029 --> 00:21:26.299 to the very ends of the earth. So think about Jesus's life, son 223 00:21:26.380 --> 00:21:33.569 of David, that Matthew testifies to there in that genealogy. What kind of 224 00:21:33.690 --> 00:21:40.210 victories did Jesus have? Well, this morning in our Sunday school class we 225 00:21:40.289 --> 00:21:47.009 considered Jesus and the Wilderness. Jesus versus Satan, the Great Evil One himself 226 00:21:47.089 --> 00:21:51.559 who had deceived man in the garden and had tried to bring God's plans for 227 00:21:51.759 --> 00:21:59.319 men to an end. and Jesus wins that battle. Then there is Jesus 228 00:21:59.400 --> 00:22:03.990 a versus the demons. All throughout the Gospels, as will read and as 229 00:22:03.029 --> 00:22:08.069 we continue to read on through Mattin Matthew, demons are these unclean spirits that 230 00:22:08.190 --> 00:22:18.019 have extreme amounts of control over people and things, and Jesus casts them out 231 00:22:18.019 --> 00:22:22.579 as though they were there were nothings like lint in his pocket, just letting 232 00:22:22.700 --> 00:22:30.130 letting them go. Then there's a Jesus versus the corrupt justice and politics of 233 00:22:30.250 --> 00:22:36.130 his day, Jesus against false trials. There's Jesus against deception and lying, 234 00:22:36.250 --> 00:22:42.809 even from among his own people. There's Jesus against sin, there's Jesus against 235 00:22:44.049 --> 00:22:49.799 death, there's Jesus against you. Our shorter catechism says that one of the 236 00:22:49.920 --> 00:22:57.480 things Jesus does as king is he subdues our hearts. He comes to US 237 00:22:57.589 --> 00:23:06.269 enemies and he subdues us. Fortunately, he does it by saving us, 238 00:23:07.910 --> 00:23:14.140 by rescuing us, as Colossians one three says he has delivered us from the 239 00:23:14.339 --> 00:23:22.619 domain of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his beloved son. When 240 00:23:22.660 --> 00:23:29.609 you think about these promises that are anticipated and foreshadowed with David, when you 241 00:23:29.690 --> 00:23:32.369 think about your own life, as you link a bit, think of it 242 00:23:32.450 --> 00:23:37.849 as a life being lived out in Christ, in Jesus, who is come 243 00:23:37.650 --> 00:23:45.799 as king. There's so many applications, there's so many ways in which this 244 00:23:45.880 --> 00:23:52.839 should affect and influence our lives. How about trusting the Lord? How about 245 00:23:52.880 --> 00:23:59.230 making sure you're on Jesus's side when it's Jesus versus sin and death and demons 246 00:23:59.349 --> 00:24:04.630 and corruption and Satan, when he offers peace to you, when he invites 247 00:24:04.670 --> 00:24:08.869 you and he says come, believe in me, trust in you, he's 248 00:24:08.950 --> 00:24:15.619 offering us to save us from the wrath of God. First, Thessalonians one 249 00:24:15.619 --> 00:24:21.619 hundred and ten says that Christians are those who have been delivered from the wrath 250 00:24:21.660 --> 00:24:30.089 of God. Beyond Jesus's side, there are any other output, other applications 251 00:24:30.250 --> 00:24:36.369 to with this kind of King. Who Establishes this kind of kingdom? We 252 00:24:36.490 --> 00:24:44.359 have hope for justice, we have hope for peace. This is a deep 253 00:24:44.559 --> 00:24:49.720 need. Some of US have given our lives I think of Bruce, I 254 00:24:49.799 --> 00:24:55.630 think of other people who are involved and have spent decades and decades trying to 255 00:24:55.789 --> 00:25:03.390 promote peace and justice and yet at the same time seeing much futility in it. 256 00:25:04.029 --> 00:25:10.059 Things not going well, but Jesus promises to make it all right, 257 00:25:10.460 --> 00:25:15.819 perfectly forever, not measures of Justice and measure use of equity, but perfect 258 00:25:15.900 --> 00:25:21.220 in every way. I want you to consider one more thing in light of 259 00:25:21.339 --> 00:25:25.609 first chronicles eighteen, which I hope will be an encouragement to you. Will 260 00:25:25.650 --> 00:25:32.890 conclude with this. You notice that these trophies that David takes for himself, 261 00:25:33.930 --> 00:25:40.559 he doesn't really take them for himself. We read that the bronze, for 262 00:25:40.720 --> 00:25:44.359 example, the gold and silver and bronze that he's given as a tribute from 263 00:25:44.400 --> 00:25:51.390 toe, he dedicates these to Yahweh he takes this from with all the silver 264 00:25:51.549 --> 00:25:53.710 and gold that he has carried off from the nations, from Edom Moab, 265 00:25:53.829 --> 00:25:56.789 ammonites, the Philistines, I am and like, and he dedicates it, 266 00:25:56.869 --> 00:26:03.670 he gives it to God. In Verse Eighteen, we read that David took 267 00:26:03.670 --> 00:26:07.339 a large amount of bronze from Hota Desert and with it, with that bronze, 268 00:26:08.500 --> 00:26:15.180 Solomon made the bronze sea and the pillars and the vessels. I bring 269 00:26:15.299 --> 00:26:23.250 this up because when you think about Jesus establishing a kingdom, when you think 270 00:26:23.289 --> 00:26:29.410 about God rescuing you from a kingdom or a dominion of darkness and bringing you 271 00:26:29.490 --> 00:26:34.960 into the Kingdom of his beloved son, you might think of yourselves as some 272 00:26:36.160 --> 00:26:41.519 of this gold or bronze or silver that David goes and takes from these dominions 273 00:26:41.559 --> 00:26:47.390 of darkness and brings them in to the Kingdom of God. What does David 274 00:26:47.470 --> 00:26:52.349 do with them? He puts them to service. He puts them to use 275 00:26:52.430 --> 00:26:56.950 in which they will be a a part of the temple, a part of 276 00:26:56.710 --> 00:27:03.660 the glory of God in Israel. This morning, in Romans Eight, we 277 00:27:03.900 --> 00:27:11.140 have considered ourselves as sons, but we're also trophies, trophies of God's Victorious 278 00:27:11.740 --> 00:27:18.569 Grace, his plunder that he is taken from the evil one. Our King 279 00:27:18.809 --> 00:27:23.730 is a mighty king and you, if you believe in him, are the 280 00:27:23.809 --> 00:27:30.720 trophies of His grace and you, indeed, as Peter says, are being 281 00:27:30.839 --> 00:27:37.319 put to service part of the temple that Jesus is constructing. Once you belonged 282 00:27:37.519 --> 00:27:44.710 in the service of the enemy, but now you belong to the House and 283 00:27:44.950 --> 00:27:52.309 to the household of God, and so, in the same way that there 284 00:27:52.470 --> 00:27:59.740 is a record of God's faithfulness, this kind of list here in first chronicles 285 00:27:59.859 --> 00:28:06.660 eighteen, a conquer a record of David's conquest. You might consider yourselves, 286 00:28:07.500 --> 00:28:10.900 if we were to just take a moment and list each of your names, 287 00:28:11.539 --> 00:28:17.769 as a similar kind of record, a record in which God says, these 288 00:28:17.849 --> 00:28:22.250 are my trophies, these are the records of my conquest. Theeus is the 289 00:28:22.329 --> 00:28:26.920 kind of place and people that I have established. We might say, then, 290 00:28:27.000 --> 00:28:32.000 that the book of life that is mentioned in revelation is not just a 291 00:28:32.319 --> 00:28:40.599 boring long list of names. It's the glory of God and it has your 292 00:28:40.680 --> 00:28:45.910 name in it. It's a record of his perfect and complete victory over sin, 293 00:28:45.829 --> 00:28:53.150 over death, over Satan. When we hear of these victories, we 294 00:28:53.269 --> 00:29:03.700 do have peace, I think peace knowing that we belong to God, we're 295 00:29:03.779 --> 00:29:08.619 taken care of by him, and that is Paul says. The Lord will 296 00:29:08.700 --> 00:29:15.369 rescue me from every evil deed and bring me safely into his kingdom. This 297 00:29:15.529 --> 00:29:18.329 is Paul's a great hope, and he says this at the end of Second 298 00:29:18.369 --> 00:29:22.650 Timothy, where things are not a going so well for him and when things 299 00:29:22.690 --> 00:29:26.160 are not going so well for you. I hope you will say the same 300 00:29:26.319 --> 00:29:33.319 thing when you remember David's greater son. The Lord will rescue me from every 301 00:29:33.400 --> 00:29:40.150 evil deed and bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom. Let us pray
