WEBVTT 1 00:00:01.480 --> 00:00:05.320 Well, I hope as we started, as I started reading those very first 2 00:00:05.360 --> 00:00:10.750 few verses, you were able to picture in your mind what was going on 3 00:00:11.029 --> 00:00:16.469 here. You Remember, back in twenty two perhaps, that David spoke in 4 00:00:16.550 --> 00:00:22.219 a private way concerning his son Solomon and what would be required, what must 5 00:00:22.260 --> 00:00:26.219 be done, that the temple would be placed in his hands for him to 6 00:00:26.260 --> 00:00:34.539 build. What was done privately there is now done very publicly. Outward commitment 7 00:00:34.780 --> 00:00:40.130 is often just as important as an inward one, and so the scene is 8 00:00:40.250 --> 00:00:47.609 set at the very beginning of this chapter David Assembling everyone, not all Israel, 9 00:00:47.649 --> 00:00:52.600 as is done before, but the officials of Israel, all the people 10 00:00:52.679 --> 00:00:57.759 of the palace and the temple, the armies, the special guards, palace 11 00:00:57.880 --> 00:01:03.880 officials, all of the leaders are there because they are about to witness a 12 00:01:03.040 --> 00:01:08.709 kind of coronation ceremony. Here are the people that saw that will be most 13 00:01:08.790 --> 00:01:15.310 directly a reporting to Solomon, the people that Solomon will most directly be in 14 00:01:15.390 --> 00:01:19.980 charge of the Nara is David, King David and all of his wisdom, 15 00:01:19.019 --> 00:01:23.620 after all of his battles, after all of the things he had done, 16 00:01:23.459 --> 00:01:30.459 looking at his son and saying this you will do be st wrong and courageous 17 00:01:32.379 --> 00:01:36.890 and do it. He speaks to Solomon in this way, but he's, 18 00:01:36.930 --> 00:01:42.290 of course, not just speaking to Solomon. There is this host of people 19 00:01:42.450 --> 00:01:46.849 there that are paying attention to this, and that's for an important reason. 20 00:01:47.920 --> 00:01:52.599 How the king moves, well, so goes the people. The king, 21 00:01:52.640 --> 00:01:56.719 in some ways is kind of like a wind on a flame. He could 22 00:01:57.200 --> 00:02:01.269 blow hard on that flame and extinguish his people, or you can blow another 23 00:02:01.390 --> 00:02:07.709 way and cause it to grow and become stronger. The king really matters and 24 00:02:07.870 --> 00:02:12.629 the people know this. But in all of this and this great coronation ceremony 25 00:02:12.750 --> 00:02:16.740 and all of these instructions is David is handing over his reign to Solomon, 26 00:02:19.060 --> 00:02:24.419 one thought stands out above all the rest, one idea, one thing that 27 00:02:24.580 --> 00:02:30.569 gets hammered again and again and again in all kinds of different ways, and 28 00:02:30.729 --> 00:02:38.770 it's this God is king. It's an interesting thought. Right in the middle 29 00:02:38.770 --> 00:02:44.360 of an coronation ceremony where the kingship is being handed from one King, David, 30 00:02:44.479 --> 00:02:50.360 to his son Solomon, the chief thought in the whole process is of 31 00:02:50.479 --> 00:02:58.439 another King, God the king, and this really has characterized David's whole minister 32 00:02:58.590 --> 00:03:06.469 three administry kingship. David's work, David's anointing, David's calling has been to 33 00:03:06.710 --> 00:03:12.750 point to God as king, to seek after him, to follow him, 34 00:03:13.340 --> 00:03:19.500 to do as he commands. So yes, we read in First Chronicles Twenty 35 00:03:19.539 --> 00:03:24.379 eight that Israel will have a king after David, but this king will rule 36 00:03:24.620 --> 00:03:30.169 in the name of Jehovah, he will rule in the name of God, 37 00:03:30.530 --> 00:03:36.650 the God of the universe, the God of David, the God of Abraham 38 00:03:36.689 --> 00:03:43.879 and Isaac and Jacob. Solomon may be great, he may be awesome, 39 00:03:44.039 --> 00:03:51.280 he may be glorious, but only God is king, and David Sets that 40 00:03:52.240 --> 00:03:57.710 before Solomon and before these other leaders and, in a sense, before all 41 00:03:57.789 --> 00:04:06.030 Israel and even before you tonight, and this is important to hear as now 42 00:04:06.229 --> 00:04:11.139 as much as it was then. It's true, we don't belong to the 43 00:04:11.180 --> 00:04:15.139 Kingdom of Israel anymore, but as but in so far as the Kingdom of 44 00:04:15.259 --> 00:04:18.779 Israel was an expression of the Kingdom of God, we do belong to that. 45 00:04:20.019 --> 00:04:25.689 And you know what still true about the Kingdom of God? God is 46 00:04:25.810 --> 00:04:30.730 King, he is the king of Kings, he is the Lord of Lords, 47 00:04:30.810 --> 00:04:35.329 he is one, and there is only one God. God, since 48 00:04:35.490 --> 00:04:42.759 the time of David and Solomon, did not step down or abdicate his rulers, 49 00:04:43.160 --> 00:04:48.000 his authority. He has not been overruled, he has not died, 50 00:04:48.959 --> 00:04:54.509 but he remains a king as strong as ever. And in fact, in 51 00:04:54.589 --> 00:05:00.790 Christ we have a new and final human king over us, over God's people. 52 00:05:00.829 --> 00:05:03.470 And then when we consider him in that kingdom, as we will, 53 00:05:03.509 --> 00:05:09.939 we come to see that God's authority, God ruling over us as his king, 54 00:05:10.180 --> 00:05:16.019 is not abated, but it's even strengthened and become more clear. So 55 00:05:16.300 --> 00:05:23.970 tonight we consider the kingship of God and David's farewell address and will consider it 56 00:05:24.050 --> 00:05:30.250 under both the old kingdom and the new. Well, if you'll forgive me 57 00:05:30.689 --> 00:05:34.050 for being a little listy, we're going to just tick through some things here 58 00:05:34.529 --> 00:05:42.000 on various aspects of the text to see this point. All right, this 59 00:05:42.120 --> 00:05:46.680 is an important part. Whenever we study the Bible we ask what does it 60 00:05:46.839 --> 00:05:49.829 say? How does it say it? Where do we see it before we 61 00:05:49.990 --> 00:05:55.910 begin thinking about its meaning or its application? So how do we see this 62 00:05:56.629 --> 00:06:01.069 point that God is King? Well, comes to us in several ways. 63 00:06:01.949 --> 00:06:06.620 The first way is historical. Briefly, you see in verses two and three 64 00:06:08.860 --> 00:06:12.579 that David had a plan. He says I had it in my heart to 65 00:06:12.699 --> 00:06:16.500 build the house. I wanted to build the temple a for the Lord and 66 00:06:17.339 --> 00:06:23.529 he said No. We see God's sovereignty over these things. There is this 67 00:06:23.730 --> 00:06:30.089 vus thing that has happened that David says God was sovereign over. We have 68 00:06:30.290 --> 00:06:33.199 plans, we make them, but God is ultimately the one who decides. 69 00:06:34.000 --> 00:06:40.439 This is the first thing David says before he hands over this commission to Solomon 70 00:06:40.519 --> 00:06:42.879 and says this is your work, my son. You need to do this 71 00:06:43.120 --> 00:06:49.189 work. He establishes the work as having begun not by him but by God 72 00:06:49.430 --> 00:06:55.189 and in God's own timing. The second we see, way we see God's 73 00:06:55.189 --> 00:07:00.189 authority and expression of his authority, is in the temple itself and in the 74 00:07:00.350 --> 00:07:08.300 arc in particular. The notice that the establishment of Solomon as king is really 75 00:07:08.339 --> 00:07:14.459 all about one thing, the temple, building the temple. There's that long 76 00:07:14.740 --> 00:07:18.529 section in the middle that's listing all of these various temple objects and temple people, 77 00:07:18.610 --> 00:07:24.610 temple servants. The whole thing begins by David saying I had it in 78 00:07:24.689 --> 00:07:27.610 my heart to build a temple, but God said no, and so I'm 79 00:07:27.610 --> 00:07:32.120 giving that to you. All of these things that Solomon is called to do. 80 00:07:32.720 --> 00:07:35.360 You might think of all of the things that would be required of him 81 00:07:35.360 --> 00:07:44.079 as king there is one thing that is going to mark Solomon's Kingship, one 82 00:07:44.240 --> 00:07:48.350 job in particular that he is going to be called to do. And indeed, 83 00:07:48.389 --> 00:07:54.310 David says in Verse Twenty, He will not leave you or forsake you 84 00:07:55.149 --> 00:07:59.500 until all the work of the service of the House of the Lord is finished. 85 00:08:00.540 --> 00:08:01.899 This doesn't mean that as soon as it's done, God leaves. In 86 00:08:03.019 --> 00:08:05.180 fact, as the opposite happens. You remember, we thought about this this 87 00:08:05.459 --> 00:08:09.579 morning. The glory of the Lord descends down upon the temple when it's finished. 88 00:08:11.259 --> 00:08:13.449 The word until there, I think, means a kind of even up 89 00:08:13.529 --> 00:08:20.689 to a kind of sense, but nevertheless, the point is that God is 90 00:08:20.769 --> 00:08:22.529 going to be with him. He has this job to do. And if 91 00:08:22.649 --> 00:08:26.519 Solomon is all about the temple, well then what is the temple about? 92 00:08:28.680 --> 00:08:33.720 Is that about Solomon? No, it's about God. It's not the Temple 93 00:08:33.799 --> 00:08:39.200 of Solomon, it's not the Temple of Solomon's God, it's the Temple of 94 00:08:39.360 --> 00:08:43.429 God. What another way we see that not only in the temple, is 95 00:08:43.509 --> 00:08:50.309 in the ARC in particular. Notice that it's how it's described, for example 96 00:08:50.470 --> 00:08:56.980 in verse eighteen, for the Altar, I'm sorry, are also his plan 97 00:08:56.220 --> 00:09:03.779 for the Golden Chariot of the Cherubeam that spread their wings and covered the arc 98 00:09:03.940 --> 00:09:11.370 of the covenant of the Lord. It's described there as a chariot and earlier 99 00:09:11.529 --> 00:09:16.409 it's described as a footstool. This is something I've been hinting at all along, 100 00:09:16.450 --> 00:09:20.529 as we've been talking about the arc again and again, and here's one 101 00:09:20.570 --> 00:09:24.480 of the places it comes from. This is one of the places that speaks 102 00:09:24.600 --> 00:09:28.799 in the Bible this explicitly about these kinds of things. It might help to 103 00:09:28.840 --> 00:09:35.080 understand this if you think in the context of Israel's neighbors. In the ancient 104 00:09:35.159 --> 00:09:39.190 Near East, it was very common that you would build a temple, you 105 00:09:39.230 --> 00:09:45.190 would construct your idol and then at the foot of that idol you would place 106 00:09:45.669 --> 00:09:52.230 important documents, charters, treaties, these kinds of things. It was a 107 00:09:52.309 --> 00:09:56.779 way in which it was symbolized that the god of the people ruled and had 108 00:09:56.779 --> 00:10:03.580 authority. He was sitting, he was in charge and they're at his footstool. 109 00:10:05.259 --> 00:10:11.730 Were was the law. Well, without getting into a which came first, 110 00:10:11.129 --> 00:10:15.210 the chicken or the egg, Israel or her neighbors and all that. 111 00:10:16.009 --> 00:10:20.889 What we do see here is a something very similar going on, a very 112 00:10:20.970 --> 00:10:26.600 similar kind of imagery that God is establishing here. He calls the arc his 113 00:10:26.759 --> 00:10:33.960 footstool, except the difference is is in this temple there's no idol, there's 114 00:10:33.120 --> 00:10:43.590 no god that you can go and see. It is a room and in 115 00:10:43.710 --> 00:10:48.190 a way he god is described in other portions of scripture as being up in 116 00:10:48.269 --> 00:10:54.220 the heavenly places, seated high above even creation itself, with his feet kind 117 00:10:54.220 --> 00:11:00.740 of resting down here on Earth at the ARC. And you remember what's in 118 00:11:00.860 --> 00:11:07.370 the ARC, most importantly the law of God, those two tablets that God 119 00:11:07.450 --> 00:11:13.289 gave Moses on Mount Sinai in all of this, on all of this imagery 120 00:11:13.409 --> 00:11:18.200 that God is establishing for his people, he is doing what he is saying. 121 00:11:18.240 --> 00:11:26.120 I am King, he's sang the Solomon build my throne room. And 122 00:11:26.480 --> 00:11:31.799 also we see in this language of footstool and throne and all of these other 123 00:11:31.909 --> 00:11:37.309 things, chariot, for example, a kind of sitting action. Now that's 124 00:11:37.350 --> 00:11:43.549 important as well, because it shows a kind of authority. Especially in the 125 00:11:43.669 --> 00:11:48.659 ancient world, a person who sits down is one who sits down and takes 126 00:11:48.940 --> 00:11:56.259 rule. You see an example of this and verse five, I believe. 127 00:11:56.580 --> 00:12:01.299 Let me see if I can find it here. Right and of all my 128 00:12:01.570 --> 00:12:05.370 sons, for the Lord has given me many sons, he has chosen solemn 129 00:12:05.450 --> 00:12:11.289 in my son to sit on the throne of the Kingdom. You see what 130 00:12:11.330 --> 00:12:15.649 he's saying here. He's using this language of sitting to demonstrate and to talk 131 00:12:15.759 --> 00:12:20.559 about authority and rule. Well, that's exactly what God is doing. It's 132 00:12:20.600 --> 00:12:24.440 sort of what we confess when we confess the creeds and we say that the 133 00:12:24.600 --> 00:12:30.309 Lord goes and sits down at the father's right hand. It's not just sort 134 00:12:30.350 --> 00:12:33.070 of a throw in verb to say, well, he's doing something, it's 135 00:12:33.110 --> 00:12:39.149 a way we are expressing authority of kingship and rule. So how is God, 136 00:12:39.549 --> 00:12:43.299 how is David, reminding Solomon and to us and all these people in 137 00:12:43.379 --> 00:12:46.539 front of him that God is King? Well, it's not just in the 138 00:12:46.580 --> 00:12:52.220 change of plans, but it's also in all of this imagery surrounding the temple 139 00:12:52.500 --> 00:12:58.179 and the ARC in particular. A third way we see it is in God's 140 00:12:58.340 --> 00:13:05.250 sovereign election. First of David. In verse four, we read that God 141 00:13:05.610 --> 00:13:11.450 chose David from all his father's house to be king over Israel forever. And 142 00:13:11.570 --> 00:13:16.440 then he talks about the tribe. He says for he chose Judah as leader 143 00:13:16.799 --> 00:13:20.159 and in the House of Judah, my father's house and among my father's sons, 144 00:13:20.200 --> 00:13:26.600 he took pleasure in me to make me king over all Israel. So 145 00:13:26.759 --> 00:13:30.990 he has the special choosing of David Right this language to where it says that 146 00:13:31.389 --> 00:13:35.509 he was pleased to do these things, he took pleasure in me. Is 147 00:13:35.590 --> 00:13:39.190 a way that as a phrase that's used in scripture, not when God looks 148 00:13:39.230 --> 00:13:43.220 at something and says, like you might go into a gift shop and you 149 00:13:43.299 --> 00:13:46.940 see something you oh, this is so wonderful, we have to buy this, 150 00:13:48.539 --> 00:13:50.500 I love this thing, it's so pretty. It's not that kind of 151 00:13:50.659 --> 00:13:54.700 thing. It's the kind of it was my pleasure to do it, and 152 00:13:54.850 --> 00:13:58.970 so I did it. kind of sense. It's a way in which God 153 00:14:00.210 --> 00:14:03.809 says, I do what I choose to do, I do what I please. 154 00:14:05.850 --> 00:14:07.850 In most cases where this phrase is used, that's used in a way 155 00:14:07.889 --> 00:14:15.480 to describe people that are weak and frail and helpless. That God chooses even 156 00:14:15.679 --> 00:14:18.440 these things, and that's what he does with David. You remember the story, 157 00:14:18.480 --> 00:14:22.440 right, Samuel Goes and David's father pervails before. I'm all these sons, 158 00:14:22.480 --> 00:14:24.870 and Sam's like, Oh, surely must be this one or this one 159 00:14:24.909 --> 00:14:26.990 or this one. Finally, he is like, wells none of these. 160 00:14:28.789 --> 00:14:31.710 Do you have any other sons? Well, yeah, there's old David out 161 00:14:31.830 --> 00:14:35.870 the you know, back forty, watching the watching the sheep. Okay, 162 00:14:37.070 --> 00:14:41.539 bring him in, and that was him. How different that is from Saul 163 00:14:41.580 --> 00:14:46.460 ahead, taller than all the rest of Israel. Impressive. Grand everyone's like, 164 00:14:46.539 --> 00:14:52.049 well, we know who's going to be the king. Obviously no Godd 165 00:14:52.250 --> 00:14:58.129 was pleased to choose David. He is King, God is King. He's 166 00:14:58.169 --> 00:15:05.690 the one who's doing the choosing, the royal the right to reign is not 167 00:15:05.929 --> 00:15:11.919 because of good looks or power or prominence or political intrigue. The right to 168 00:15:11.960 --> 00:15:18.360 rule is because God said they had a right to rule, and that's true 169 00:15:18.360 --> 00:15:22.629 of David. So God's kingship. You see in this sovereign electing love of 170 00:15:22.870 --> 00:15:26.149 David. I'm you also see it in Solomon, right, and I've read 171 00:15:26.190 --> 00:15:31.389 this verse once or twice now, but in all my sons, for God 172 00:15:31.470 --> 00:15:35.779 has given me many sons. He has chosen Solomon and we don't have the 173 00:15:35.860 --> 00:15:39.700 description of how all that happened. You'll have to go back to the other 174 00:15:39.820 --> 00:15:43.659 historical books and and read about that. But it's not the necessarily the obvious 175 00:15:43.779 --> 00:15:50.970 choice Solomon. We know Solomon is being wise here. He's alluded to as 176 00:15:50.049 --> 00:16:00.049 being obedient and good, but this is not but God has chosen Solomon, 177 00:16:02.049 --> 00:16:06.639 his electing love. The final way we see saw it, God's sovereign kingly 178 00:16:06.720 --> 00:16:10.080 election not only David, not only in Solomon, but is also in the 179 00:16:10.159 --> 00:16:15.879 temple plans, verse nineteen. David says all this. He made clear to 180 00:16:15.919 --> 00:16:19.590 me and writing from the hand of Jehovah. All the work to be done 181 00:16:19.629 --> 00:16:27.230 according to the plan, and David has received a plan from God which must 182 00:16:27.269 --> 00:16:34.700 be executed. So we see God's Kingship, his sovereignty, David's expression and 183 00:16:34.940 --> 00:16:40.539 reminders of these things in the history of the events in the throne and the 184 00:16:40.659 --> 00:16:47.019 temple, in his sovereign election and then finally in the obedience that is required. 185 00:16:48.970 --> 00:16:56.210 Think about what David could have said. David could have said Solomon Saul 186 00:16:56.929 --> 00:17:03.080 blew it, but I've done well. I've established a kingdom and here are 187 00:17:03.120 --> 00:17:07.920 the rules and the laws that I want you to enforce. I have us 188 00:17:07.119 --> 00:17:11.640 made good treasuries and store houses of things, and I want you to continue 189 00:17:12.720 --> 00:17:19.150 of expanding on these and growing them. For My name's sake. David could 190 00:17:19.150 --> 00:17:25.630 have called him to be obedient to his rule, to his decisions, and 191 00:17:25.910 --> 00:17:32.500 in some ways he does in other portions of scripture. But the obedience that 192 00:17:32.980 --> 00:17:40.500 David requires of his son is not first and foremost to him, it is 193 00:17:40.579 --> 00:17:45.569 to God. Solomon is a king, but he is also a subject, 194 00:17:45.609 --> 00:17:51.890 as we all are. And so, for example, listen to some of 195 00:17:51.970 --> 00:17:56.329 these verbs and, as I give these, I want you to take this 196 00:17:56.529 --> 00:18:00.839 not only as David's call to Solomon, but this is a lesson in how 197 00:18:00.880 --> 00:18:04.279 to obey. You want to know how to obey the Lord, you want 198 00:18:04.279 --> 00:18:11.519 to know what it means to to follow after him. Here's how. Verse 199 00:18:11.680 --> 00:18:19.829 Eight he says, observe and seek out all the commandments of Jehovah, your 200 00:18:19.990 --> 00:18:26.339 God. Observe and seek. We also have in verse seven what we have 201 00:18:26.460 --> 00:18:33.539 in other places, this command to be strong in keeping my commandments, he 202 00:18:33.660 --> 00:18:40.180 says. In Verse Nine He says, Solomon, my son, know the 203 00:18:40.299 --> 00:18:45.170 god of your father and serve him. So be strong in keeping the commandments. 204 00:18:45.490 --> 00:18:52.730 Observe and seek. No, and serve and you are to do this, 205 00:18:52.930 --> 00:18:56.680 Solomon. You are to do this citizen of the Kingdom of God, 206 00:18:56.920 --> 00:19:03.480 with a whole heart and a whole mind. Some of the opposites are given 207 00:19:03.519 --> 00:19:07.839 in verse twenty. Be Strong, courageous, do it, but also don't 208 00:19:07.839 --> 00:19:15.549 fear, don't be dismayed. Thinking about the opposites is helpful when we think 209 00:19:15.549 --> 00:19:19.390 about obedience. If God calls us to observe and seek him, what are 210 00:19:19.390 --> 00:19:27.579 the opposite sit's ignorance, laziness, not paying attention, not caring, just 211 00:19:29.339 --> 00:19:33.619 sort of sitting around not paying attention. If knowing and serving God with a 212 00:19:33.700 --> 00:19:37.500 whole heart and a whole mind, what is required is what is is what 213 00:19:37.730 --> 00:19:41.849 is required. Well, what's the opposite? How do we not serve God 214 00:19:41.890 --> 00:19:48.170 well, when we are double minded, when we win our hearts want two 215 00:19:48.289 --> 00:19:52.799 things? Or what about be strong, courageous and do it? Well, 216 00:19:52.880 --> 00:20:00.160 what's the opposite of that? Well, weakness, fear, lack of follow 217 00:20:00.200 --> 00:20:06.960 through. That's not obedience and that's not what David Calls Solomon to do. 218 00:20:07.150 --> 00:20:12.150 We see God's expressing himself to us as the King of Israel in the history, 219 00:20:12.509 --> 00:20:17.549 in the temple, in the throne, in his sovereign election and in 220 00:20:17.990 --> 00:20:27.579 his requirement for obedience, perfect obedience, wholehearted obedience, full throated confessions of 221 00:20:27.700 --> 00:20:32.500 love for the Lord. Know Me, serve Me, seek after me, 222 00:20:32.940 --> 00:20:38.849 observe these things. And in all of the this, God establish him some 223 00:20:40.089 --> 00:20:47.329 said, God establishes himself as King, and in that he promises Israel a 224 00:20:47.569 --> 00:20:53.240 new history, a history tree of rest. David calls it this, and 225 00:20:53.319 --> 00:20:59.119 verses two and three. This idea of resting is found in the footstool. 226 00:20:59.839 --> 00:21:03.309 There is this idea that Solomon himself is a man of rest, not David, 227 00:21:03.349 --> 00:21:07.509 a man of war. This is the era that God is seeking to 228 00:21:07.589 --> 00:21:14.109 lead them into in his kingship. This is the benefit. Protection from enemies 229 00:21:14.549 --> 00:21:22.900 plenty in the land, peace all the way around. Well, how are 230 00:21:22.940 --> 00:21:26.299 we to think about these things? If this is the old covenant, if 231 00:21:26.339 --> 00:21:29.579 this is the old kingdom or the old expression of the Kingdom of God, 232 00:21:30.059 --> 00:21:33.650 how do we think about ourselves in the New Kingdom? How do these things 233 00:21:33.809 --> 00:21:38.529 point us to and teach us about, Jesus as our King? Well, 234 00:21:38.569 --> 00:21:42.730 we can save a few brief things, and I think they'll be both obvious 235 00:21:45.490 --> 00:21:52.279 and smile inducing. The first is that in both we see that God chooses 236 00:21:52.359 --> 00:21:56.960 his own king right his sovereign election. But in the new covenant, this 237 00:21:57.279 --> 00:22:03.470 Human King That's chosen is the son of God himself, this one whom the 238 00:22:03.589 --> 00:22:11.589 father has set his love on from all eternity, a mutual love, back 239 00:22:11.750 --> 00:22:18.660 and forth, perfection, unity, forever and ever. And this one whom 240 00:22:18.660 --> 00:22:22.900 God has chosen, this one whom the father has chosen, even his very 241 00:22:22.940 --> 00:22:27.700 own son, using language that David Uses here and first chronicles twenty eight, 242 00:22:29.859 --> 00:22:33.329 you choose, is his son and he requires of him obedience, just like 243 00:22:33.490 --> 00:22:40.849 he does of Solomon. But the difference is is that Solomon, you remember, 244 00:22:41.329 --> 00:22:48.039 didn't quite obey. In many ways, he did, but not in 245 00:22:48.119 --> 00:22:52.559 every way. But Jesus it's different. Jesus, the king, does obey 246 00:22:52.680 --> 00:22:59.109 with a whole heart and he does secure the requirement, he fulfills the requirement. 247 00:23:00.309 --> 00:23:03.950 Remember what David says here. He says, listen, Solomon, if 248 00:23:03.990 --> 00:23:07.150 you obey me, if you are sorry, if you obey the Lord, 249 00:23:07.869 --> 00:23:12.220 God will give you rest, but if you forsake the Lord, he will 250 00:23:12.259 --> 00:23:22.700 reject you. What happens with Jesus? He obeys and he obeys perfectly and 251 00:23:22.859 --> 00:23:26.369 he does it in such a way that perfectly fulfills this requirement for us, 252 00:23:26.569 --> 00:23:33.130 so that the rest that's promised to Solomon will never be taken away from us. 253 00:23:34.329 --> 00:23:41.160 We stand like these officials stand when we hear the gospels, when we 254 00:23:41.359 --> 00:23:47.759 hear about Jesus saying, like David, I've done your will, father. 255 00:23:47.920 --> 00:23:51.640 I've said up forth these things. I've fulfilled the commands, except, of 256 00:23:51.720 --> 00:23:57.430 course, in a perfect way. We stand in this court room and we 257 00:23:57.670 --> 00:24:03.430 hear God's electing love, as he says to his son, like in Psalm 258 00:24:03.589 --> 00:24:08.109 too, this is my son, I am establishing him on my throne. 259 00:24:08.150 --> 00:24:12.140 Or, as he says at the baptism of Jesus, this is my son 260 00:24:12.500 --> 00:24:18.500 in whom I am well pleased. We hear this and we are listening, 261 00:24:18.940 --> 00:24:22.220 like the people in the court room, to the coronation of our king, 262 00:24:23.529 --> 00:24:33.490 our king. Remember what Jesus says about Solomon. He says that the lilies 263 00:24:33.569 --> 00:24:37.210 of the field are arrayed in more glory than Solomon was in his temple. 264 00:24:37.680 --> 00:24:42.240 That's to make another point, but the point is that Jesus himself recognizes a 265 00:24:42.480 --> 00:24:48.920 a great measure of glory and Power and and Excellency And Majesty and Solomon's reign. 266 00:24:51.200 --> 00:24:56.269 But Jesus wasn't subservient to that. He was above that, greater than 267 00:24:56.390 --> 00:25:04.269 Solomon, Greater Than David himself, and in that he secures the kingdom perfectly. 268 00:25:06.150 --> 00:25:08.980 And that's another big difference. In both the old kingdom and the New 269 00:25:10.019 --> 00:25:14.220 Kingdom, this rest is offered, peace is offered, but in the New 270 00:25:14.299 --> 00:25:18.740 Kingdom it's permanent. You see, we don't have to sit around and go, 271 00:25:18.900 --> 00:25:22.369 man, I really hope Jesus doesn't take another wife. That might be 272 00:25:22.490 --> 00:25:26.529 really bad for us. We don't have to sit around and go. I 273 00:25:26.730 --> 00:25:33.009 really hope he appoints some decent people this time to rule over the treasuries. 274 00:25:33.849 --> 00:25:37.079 Do you think he knows what's going on? I heard the other day about 275 00:25:37.160 --> 00:25:41.799 so and so. Do you think he knows? Do you think somebody should 276 00:25:41.799 --> 00:25:45.880 tell him? We don't have to think about Jesus and wonder if he's got 277 00:25:45.920 --> 00:25:48.720 his pulse on the people. Does he really know what's going on among them? 278 00:25:49.750 --> 00:25:55.309 Does Jesus? Does he get aware of his enemies? Boy, I'm 279 00:25:55.309 --> 00:25:57.750 sure they thought about that with Solomon and David, just as they did with 280 00:25:57.910 --> 00:26:02.750 Saul and every other human king. We look at our leaders and we're always 281 00:26:02.789 --> 00:26:07.900 going, I hope everything's okay. Seems like it's okay or boy, things 282 00:26:07.900 --> 00:26:12.660 are not okay. However it goes, we always recognize that there are these 283 00:26:12.740 --> 00:26:18.329 fault lines in the hearts of our leaders that might break open, that might 284 00:26:19.329 --> 00:26:26.849 cause us great harm. But with Jesus we never have to worry about these 285 00:26:26.930 --> 00:26:32.250 things. We never have to wonder if he's going to mess up or make 286 00:26:32.289 --> 00:26:37.160 a bad decision, if he's not gonna Follow God anymore. He is God. 287 00:26:37.440 --> 00:26:41.279 He's not going to renegg on his duties, because that would be to 288 00:26:41.920 --> 00:26:51.349 deny himself. God is one, the father and son are one, and 289 00:26:52.150 --> 00:26:56.950 Jesus sitting at the father's right hand, should give us such assurance and peace 290 00:26:56.430 --> 00:27:02.900 and hope to know that he is our leader and, as he says, 291 00:27:03.180 --> 00:27:07.579 even the gates of hell will not prevail against him or his people. They 292 00:27:07.619 --> 00:27:15.099 can't, they won't. Sure people will sit around and they'll they'll whisper with 293 00:27:15.220 --> 00:27:18.970 one another. How can we break the bond between the Lord and his anointed 294 00:27:19.049 --> 00:27:23.329 one? What can we do to destroy the relationship that the father has with 295 00:27:23.450 --> 00:27:29.369 the son or that the son has with his people? But they can't do 296 00:27:29.529 --> 00:27:34.799 anything because that relationship is bound up by God's covenant promises, the ones he 297 00:27:34.920 --> 00:27:38.000 made to David, the ones he's made to us in Jesus, the ones 298 00:27:38.079 --> 00:27:41.559 he's made to us in Abraham. And not only are they bound to us, 299 00:27:41.559 --> 00:27:45.589 but in his promises, but they are bound. We are bound and 300 00:27:45.829 --> 00:27:52.390 tied to God by his own spirit, his anointing on us. He's his 301 00:27:52.630 --> 00:28:03.099 people. So how do you hear this message? Well, if you accept 302 00:28:03.259 --> 00:28:07.779 the Lord and live and live in light of the things that he has done 303 00:28:08.579 --> 00:28:14.210 through our savior and king, then we are called to live as those who 304 00:28:14.289 --> 00:28:19.170 belong to a great king, a great leader, a heavenly kingdom that will 305 00:28:19.170 --> 00:28:23.529 never pay, that will never pass away. We're called to live as people 306 00:28:23.569 --> 00:28:30.680 who have entered into an eternal rest and everlasting glory. Should we be worriors? 307 00:28:33.119 --> 00:28:38.000 Should we be anxious people wondering where we're going to feed ourselves or clothe 308 00:28:38.039 --> 00:28:45.589 ourselves? I don't think so. Should we worry about what our enemies might 309 00:28:45.670 --> 00:28:49.150 do to us? Should we worry about persecutions that we might face? Should 310 00:28:49.150 --> 00:28:59.859 we worry about death? Now we live as those who belong to a King, 311 00:28:59.900 --> 00:29:07.339 King, Jesus, David's greater son. Of course, those who reject 312 00:29:07.500 --> 00:29:11.289 God as king will come to know his power and his strength and his glory 313 00:29:11.490 --> 00:29:19.529 in another way, in the way of judgment and death, separation. But 314 00:29:19.690 --> 00:29:26.640 this need not be so. If you receive Jesus, your king, by 315 00:29:26.759 --> 00:29:33.079 faith and trust that he's offered to you and he says come, you are 316 00:29:33.359 --> 00:29:40.990 invited. Belong to me and I will be your God and you will be 317 00:29:41.150 --> 00:29:45.509 my son's and daughters. Let us pray
