What was done privately there is now done very publicly. It's an interesting thought. So yes, we read in First Chronicles Twenty 35 00:03:19.539 --> 00:03:24.379 eight that Israel will have a king after David, but this king will rule 36 00:03:24.620 --> 00:03:30.169 in the name of Jehovah, he will rule in the name of God, 37 00:03:30.530 --> 00:03:36.650 the God of the universe, the God of David, the God of Abraham 38 00:03:36.689 --> 00:03:43.879 and Isaac and Jacob. Solomon may be great, he may be awesome, 39 00:03:44.039 --> 00:03:51.280 he may be glorious, but only God is king, and David Sets that 40 00:03:52.240 --> 00:03:57.710 before Solomon and before these other leaders and, in a sense, before all 41 00:03:57.789 --> 00:04:06.030 Israel and even before you tonight, and this is important to hear as now 42 00:04:06.229 --> 00:04:11.139 as much as it was then. Well, if you'll forgive me 57 00:05:30.689 --> 00:05:34.050 for being a little listy, we're going to just tick through some things here 58 00:05:34.529 --> 00:05:42.000 on various aspects of the text to see this point. All right, this 59 00:05:42.120 --> 00:05:46.680 is an important part. Whenever we study the Bible we ask what does it 60 00:05:46.839 --> 00:05:49.829 say? How does it say it? Where do we see it before we 61 00:05:49.990 --> 00:05:55.910 begin thinking about its meaning or its application? So how do we see this 62 00:05:56.629 --> 00:06:01.069 point that God is King? Well, comes to us in several ways. 63 00:06:01.949 --> 00:06:06.620 The first way is historical. Briefly, you see in verses two and three 64 00:06:08.860 --> 00:06:12.579 that David had a plan. He says I had it in my heart to 65 00:06:12.699 --> 00:06:16.500 build the house. I wanted to build the temple a for the Lord and 66 00:06:17.339 --> 00:06:23.529 he said No. We see God's sovereignty over these things. There is this 67 00:06:23.730 --> 00:06:30.089 vus thing that has happened that David says God was sovereign over. We have 68 00:06:30.290 --> 00:06:33.199 plans, we make them, but God is ultimately the one who decides. 69 00:06:34.000 --> 00:06:40.439 This is the first thing David says before he hands over this commission to Solomon 70 00:06:40.519 --> 00:06:42.879 and says this is your work, my son. You need to do this 71 00:06:43.120 --> 00:06:49.189 work. He establishes the work as having begun not by him but by God 72 00:06:49.430 --> 00:06:55.189 and in God's own timing. The second we see, way we see God's 73 00:06:55.189 --> 00:07:00.189 authority and expression of his authority, is in the temple itself and in the 74 00:07:00.350 --> 00:07:08.300 arc in particular. The notice that the establishment of Solomon as king is really 75 00:07:08.339 --> 00:07:14.459 all about one thing, the temple, building the temple. There's that long 76 00:07:14.740 --> 00:07:18.529 section in the middle that's listing all of these various temple objects and temple people, 77 00:07:18.610 --> 00:07:24.610 temple servants. The whole thing begins by David saying I had it in 78 00:07:24.689 --> 00:07:27.610 my heart to build a temple, but God said no, and so I'm 79 00:07:27.610 --> 00:07:32.120 giving that to you. All of these things that Solomon is called to do. 80 00:07:32.720 --> 00:07:35.360 You might think of all of the things that would be required of him 81 00:07:35.360 --> 00:07:44.079 as king there is one thing that is going to mark Solomon's Kingship, one 82 00:07:44.240 --> 00:07:48.350 job in particular that he is going to be called to do. The glory of the Lord descends down upon the temple when it's finished. 88 00:08:11.259 --> 00:08:13.449 The word until there, I think, means a kind of even up 89 00:08:13.529 --> 00:08:20.689 to a kind of sense, but nevertheless, the point is that God is 90 00:08:20.769 --> 00:08:22.529 going to be with him. This is something I've been hinting at all along, 100 00:09:16.450 --> 00:09:20.529 as we've been talking about the arc again and again, and here's one 101 00:09:20.570 --> 00:09:24.480 of the places it comes from. This is one of the places that speaks 102 00:09:24.600 --> 00:09:28.799 in the Bible this explicitly about these kinds of things. It might help to 103 00:09:28.840 --> 00:09:35.080 understand this if you think in the context of Israel's neighbors. In the ancient 104 00:09:35.159 --> 00:09:39.190 Near East, it was very common that you would build a temple, you 105 00:09:39.230 --> 00:09:45.190 would construct your idol and then at the foot of that idol you would place 106 00:09:45.669 --> 00:09:52.230 important documents, charters, treaties, these kinds of things. It was a 107 00:09:52.309 --> 00:09:56.779 way in which it was symbolized that the god of the people ruled and had 108 00:09:56.779 --> 00:10:03.580 authority. He was sitting, he was in charge and they're at his footstool. 109 00:10:05.259 --> 00:10:11.730 Were was the law. Well, without getting into a which came first, 110 00:10:11.129 --> 00:10:15.210 the chicken or the egg, Israel or her neighbors and all that. 111 00:10:16.009 --> 00:10:20.889 What we do see here is a something very similar going on, a very 112 00:10:20.970 --> 00:10:26.600 similar kind of imagery that God is establishing here. Well, that's exactly what God is doing. Well, it's not just in the 138 00:12:46.580 --> 00:12:52.220 change of plans, but it's also in all of this imagery surrounding the temple 139 00:12:52.500 --> 00:12:58.179 and the ARC in particular. A third way we see it is in God's 140 00:12:58.340 --> 00:13:05.250 sovereign election. First of David. In verse four, we read that God 141 00:13:05.610 --> 00:13:11.450 chose David from all his father's house to be king over Israel forever. He says for he chose Judah as leader 143 00:13:16.799 --> 00:13:20.159 and in the House of Judah, my father's house and among my father's sons, 144 00:13:20.200 --> 00:13:26.600 he took pleasure in me to make me king over all Israel. He is King, God is King. But it's not the necessarily the obvious 175 00:15:43.779 --> 00:15:50.970 choice Solomon. We know Solomon is being wise here. He's alluded to as 176 00:15:50.049 --> 00:16:00.049 being obedient and good, but this is not but God has chosen Solomon, 177 00:16:02.049 --> 00:16:06.639 his electing love. The final way we see saw it, God's sovereign kingly 178 00:16:06.720 --> 00:16:10.080 election not only David, not only in Solomon, but is also in the 179 00:16:10.159 --> 00:16:15.879 temple plans, verse nineteen. David says all this. He made clear to 180 00:16:15.919 --> 00:16:19.590 me and writing from the hand of Jehovah. All the work to be done 181 00:16:19.629 --> 00:16:27.230 according to the plan, and David has received a plan from God which must 182 00:16:27.269 --> 00:16:34.700 be executed. So we see God's Kingship, his sovereignty, David's expression and 183 00:16:34.940 --> 00:16:40.539 reminders of these things in the history of the events in the throne and the 184 00:16:40.659 --> 00:16:47.019 temple, in his sovereign election and then finally in the obedience that is required. 185 00:16:48.970 --> 00:16:56.210 Think about what David could have said.
