[00:00:09] Ask that God would bless the reading, preaching, hearing of his word.
[00:00:15] Our Heavenly Father, we thank you for your word to us today and for the work of your spirit and helping us to understand it, to trust, to believe, to follow.
[00:00:27] Lord, we ask that you would continue this work in our hearts as we come to the book of Revelation. We ask for your blessing as you promised to give it.
[00:00:35] We ask that we would have a greater sense knowledge of you in our minds, that we might glorify you with our lives.
[00:00:50] Lord, be at work in us today and we pray this in Jesus name.
[00:00:54] Amen.
[00:00:56] Let's remain standing and turn to Revelation, Chapter one.
[00:01:16] Revelation one begins, like many letters in the New Testament, with an introduction of the speaker of how the letter is received, a blessing, information about who it's going to, these kinds of things. You'll see those elements here as well. And in the next chapters we see that this revelation does go to the churches, including us.
[00:01:46] So let's give our attention to those and to everything that we find here in Revelation 1. This morning as we hear God's word, the revelation of Jesus Christ which God gave him to show to his servants the things that must soon take place.
[00:02:05] He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John, who bore witness to the word of God and to the testimony of Jesus Christ, even to all that he saw.
[00:02:15] Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear and who keep what is written. For the time is near.
[00:02:27] John, to the seven churches that are in Asia, grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before his throne, and from Jesus Christ the faithful witness the firstborn of the dead and the ruler of kings on earth.
[00:02:46] To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood and made us a kingdom, priests to his God and Father to him, be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
[00:02:59] Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him. And all tribes of the earth will wail on account of him. Even. Even so. Amen.
[00:03:12] I am the Alpha and the Omega, says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.
[00:03:24] I, John, your brother and partner in the tribulation and the kingdom and the patient endurance that are in Jesus was on the island of Patmos on account of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus.
[00:03:38] I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and I heard behind me a loud Voice like a trumpet saying, write what you see in a book and send it to the seven churches. To Ephesus and to Smyrna and to Pergamum and to Thyatira and to Sardis and to Philadelphia and to Laodicea.
[00:03:56] Then I turned to see the voice that was speaking to me.
[00:04:00] And on turning I saw seven golden lampstands.
[00:04:03] In the midst of the lamp stands one like a son of man, clothed with a long robe and with a golden sash around his chest.
[00:04:12] The hairs of his head were white like white wool like snow.
[00:04:17] His eyes were like a flame of fire.
[00:04:21] His feet were like burnished bronze refined in a furnace. And his voice was like the roar of many waters.
[00:04:28] In his right hand he held seven stars, and from his mouth came a sharp two edged sword.
[00:04:35] And his face was like the sun, shining in full strength.
[00:04:40] When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead.
[00:04:46] But he laid his right hand on me, saying, fear not.
[00:04:50] I am the first and the last and and the living one.
[00:04:55] I died.
[00:04:57] And behold, I am alive forevermore and I have the keys of death and Hades.
[00:05:06] Write therefore the things that you have seen, those that are and those that are to take place after this.
[00:05:13] As for the mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand and the seven golden lampstands, the seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.
[00:05:27] May God bless his word to us. You may be seated.
[00:05:51] A long time ago, I remember there was a website I found. This was a long time ago. It probably doesn't exist anymore, but it was random notes that people found.
[00:06:02] Parking lots, stairwells, various things.
[00:06:06] And then they'd post them. Sometimes they'd be little scraps of things, maybe a grocery list, maybe a letter to someone.
[00:06:15] And it's interesting to read them. You're reading these things without any context. You just wonder what's going on here.
[00:06:22] But sometimes, in fact, often you can kind of guess the context.
[00:06:26] Grocery lists, for example, look pretty similar to each other. They have similar contents, they have a similar structure, similar form.
[00:06:34] They lack certain things, they have certain things.
[00:06:37] Same with love letters.
[00:06:40] Anything else you can kind of imagine plans, right, for building a cabinet.
[00:06:46] Revelation's just the same way. We read it with eyes to how it's presented to us.
[00:06:56] What's here.
[00:06:57] And what's great is it's not presented to us in a way in which we're just guessing or we have to just kind of guess about this random thing that shows up and say, I wonder what this was for. Because it tells us what it's for.
[00:07:11] Revelation. God in his revelation of Jesus Christ. The testimony of Jesus Christ is actually super clear about what this book is for.
[00:07:23] And so it's good to start right away and think about that and maybe start putting aside the various things that our misconceptions and bad unhelpful ways about thinking about revelation.
[00:07:41] One of the major things, and the thing I want to focus on today, is that revelation, although it does tell us about things regarding the future, tells us about the history of the world and how things will end and all these kinds of things, it's not so that you just know a bunch of random facts about the future.
[00:08:01] So he tells us it's about the future in verse one, to show his servants the things that must soon take place.
[00:08:10] And then in verse 19, write, Therefore, the things that you have seen.
[00:08:15] Jesus is saying this to John.
[00:08:18] Those that are. That's going to refer to the seven churches and things that are currently going on in John's own day. And. And those things that are to take place after this, after John's own day.
[00:08:31] So it's about the future, right? We're going to tell him things about the future. But it's not just random things about the future that is sort of interesting to know or kind of exciting. Revelation is not meant to scratch a curiosity itch.
[00:08:48] It's really to direct our entire lives to the glorification of Jesus, to magnifying him and to glorying in him, to glorifying him. And we know that because of how God speaks to us and who comes to us in delivering this message. It's not a list or a timeline of things that are going to happen. You can kind of check the boxes as they go down.
[00:09:19] What's really the first thing that we're presented with in Revelation.
[00:09:24] Jesus even starts with those very words, the revelation of Jesus Christ.
[00:09:32] And then John sees a vision of him. We are told things about him, his office. All that comes to us. In other words, before we even start thinking about the things of the future that will come, before John even is told about what he's supposed to say to these seven churches.
[00:09:50] The key thing to understand that everything is going to be grounded in is the risen Jesus Christ, the one who died and the one who lives forevermore.
[00:10:04] And so if we read Revelation 1 and the rest of Revelation and we're kind of just skipping Jesus, we're missing the point.
[00:10:15] Everything. And we will see this in layers, after layers, after layers, after layers.
[00:10:20] Everything is grounded in Him. Not only as the one who speaks, but that everything is directed towards.
[00:10:30] We'll explain more.
[00:10:33] And so I want to focus on some things in Revelation 1 today that allow us to begin to understand the book as a whole, as well as Jesus, who is revealed to us here.
[00:10:45] So what is revealed to us about Jesus right here, this, at the beginning, in Revelation 1, the first thing is that Jesus is the one who speaks to us about the future.
[00:10:57] This is coming from him, as we see, he is this prophet.
[00:11:01] John is a prophet in a way. He is proclaiming the words of God, the angel who comes to John, and other voices that he hears, other angels throughout the book. They also, in a way, are prophets speaking the word of God. But the source of all of those is, of course, the word of God himself, who also speaks, who speaks both directly and indirectly to us.
[00:11:27] The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave to him to show his servants the things that must soon take place.
[00:11:40] So when John receives these revelations, John, the apostle John, who wrote the gospel of John, and the first, second, third John, that John, and this John, he receives this word, and he is receiving it from Jesus, who is called in verse five, the faithful witness.
[00:12:03] It's an interesting way to think about Jesus.
[00:12:06] When we think about witnessing, especially within church life and theological vocabulary, a lot of times we think about our job, right? We are witnesses. We are supposed to witness to Him. And that's indeed true. A big and prominent theme throughout Revelation.
[00:12:24] But what's the source of that? What's the source of our speaking, the strength of our speaking, our endurance? Even when people tell us not to speak, where does all that come from? We are told right here at the beginning. It comes from Jesus, who is the faithful witness.
[00:12:40] Before anybody says things about him, he speaks. Our words are from Him. He is the source of our revelation. All that we are going to see, all that we will experience, all of our lives are grounded not in ourselves or in our own power, but in him.
[00:13:00] And this Jesus, who is the faithful witness the testimony of Christ, which is in verses 2 and 9. This Jesus is a particular person.
[00:13:13] You could almost think of the revelation of John as another gospel of Jesus Christ, another gospel that tells us the good news about Jesus, but God in another way, it's proclaiming him. It's showing us him. It's helping us to understand him and what he's doing. And this hymn that we're talking about is not just a voice in heaven or an abstract power or force, not fate or destiny.
[00:13:43] He's not a wish, an idea.
[00:13:47] He is someone who died is one of the ways that he puts it. In verse 17.
[00:13:55] I'm sorry, verse 18, he says, I am the living one. I died. And behold, I am alive forevermore.
[00:14:04] He died because he was crucified.
[00:14:07] He died because he willingly went to the cross to give himself as a sacrifice for our sins.
[00:14:14] He died to shed his blood so that God's wrath would be turned away from us, so that we would be adopted into the family of God, so that we would become the bride of Christ, so that we would become his witnesses and his light. And all of these things that Jesus, the one that Matthew, Mark and Luke and John tells about, the one that the prophets all get us ready for throughout the Old Testament. The one who Moses prefigured and other Old Testament saints that Jesus, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, crucified, dead and buried. And now where is he, this real person, this Son of God, sitting in heaven here, revealing himself to John in this very particular way.
[00:15:04] The one who died, the one who is risen. And because he's risen, because. Because he is not just a great hero or man, he is able to speak these things with authority.
[00:15:17] Listen, pay attention. He is the alpha and the omega. We'll come to that later.
[00:15:26] Here's another line. In verse five, we come to Jesus Christ. This is from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead. That means he rose first and then all of his children. After him will rise the ruler of the kings on earth.
[00:15:45] What do you do with a king?
[00:15:47] You honor him, you respect him, you obey him.
[00:15:51] Especially when your king is the Son of God and he's ruling, ascended from the dead in heaven.
[00:16:02] Jesus is the one who speaks to us about the future. He's the one who speaks to us about the future.
[00:16:09] And Jesus is also the one who prepares us for the future.
[00:16:15] The times that are coming are going to be difficult. They are difficult. They already are.
[00:16:21] We get a sense of that right away in verse nine.
[00:16:27] I, John, your brother and partner in the tribulation and in the kingdom and in the patience, endurance that are in Jesus Christ, was on the island of Patmos on account of the word of God, likely exiled under some kind of form of persecution because of his testimony of the word sharing. Not separate, not disconnected, not talking about things he doesn't know about, but a partner in the tribulation that is in Jesus Christ. A partner in the kingdom of Jesus Christ, a partner in the patient endurance that are in Jesus Christ. These little hints you might just skip by them at the beginning.
[00:17:14] Oh, we'll come to know them, to know what it means to patiently endure in the midst of a lot of hard things, in the midst of tribulation that is not random, but that God knows about and is using and directing for our good end in the midst of a kingdom of God that is being witnessed by us from Jesus Christ in the world.
[00:17:41] There is going to be difficulties throughout this age between the Lord's first and his second coming.
[00:17:49] And there are going to be major threats that we are going to become very intimately, I hope this is one of my goals.
[00:17:57] Intimately aware of, sensitive to, thinking about violence, false teaching and worldliness.
[00:18:07] Things that come up over and over again as threats and dangers to Christ's church.
[00:18:15] But ultimately we see that as the Lord reveals us for about these threats and about these dangers. He's not again just telling us things to scare us. He's steadying us.
[00:18:26] He's preparing us. He's getting us ready to so that we can do the things that he has called us to do and so that we can become the thing that he is making us to be.
[00:18:38] I'll let you peek at it later, maybe this afternoon. We won't spend a lot of time here on it now, but go. Compare the end of Revelation to the beginning of Revelation. Compare the image of Jesus Christ as he is given here and look for similarities and parallels in the Church that is described at the end.
[00:18:58] Priestly garments and shining light and images of the temple. All of these kinds of things they teach us and they are showing us that the Lord is doing something in us that he will not fail.
[00:19:11] He is preparing us for the future, to steady us.
[00:19:15] Because the times will be hard and before the very end, Satan will lash out and try to destroy God's people.
[00:19:23] But he will fail.
[00:19:26] The way. One of the great ways how will we be studied?
[00:19:30] One of the great ways we will be studied is by coming to a clear faith in the Jesus who is revealed here in our Lord and Savior, who died for us and is ruling and reigning now over all the earth.
[00:19:47] What kinds of things give us confidence? Let's look at verses five through eight to start.
[00:19:56] John says, from Jesus Christ the faithful witness the firstborn of the dead, the ruler of kings on the earth.
[00:20:02] To him who who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood.
[00:20:10] We could spend the rest of the time right there, couldn't we?
[00:20:14] To him who loves us, the kings, the rule of all the rulers of the earth loves you, knows the numbers of hair on your Head knows exactly who you are, exactly what you need, exactly the trials for you. He's not distant from you. He loves you.
[00:20:32] And in the greatest way that is even possible, greater than we can even imagine, he's freed us from our sins by his blood.
[00:20:44] Who wants to be free of their sins?
[00:20:49] There's a hand. Good.
[00:20:52] That's two of us.
[00:20:54] No, I'm kidding. I'm kidding, right? We all do.
[00:20:58] That's something that he's already done by justifying us and giving us his righteousness and declaring us as justified before God. You. There's no condemnation for you if you're in Christ Jesus. That's done with.
[00:21:15] All done. Nothing more to happen there.
[00:21:18] Your adoption, all done. You're a member of the family, period.
[00:21:22] No ifs, ands and buts. It's done. You belong to Him. You are under. You are in his kingdom, which we'll get to a moment and more.
[00:21:31] And on top of these objective realities that he has placed in our lives, these people that he has declared us to be, he is also purifying us and working in us so that one day there won't be even any sin in us to struggle with, freeing us from our sins by his blood.
[00:21:54] On top of this, he talks about us in a communal sense. He's made us a kingdom, priests to his God and Father, and then a note of praise, Doxology.
[00:22:07] All of these doctrines leading to Doxology, teachings leading to worship. To him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
[00:22:16] When we hear these things, when you hear these things about Jesus, let your heart go there right to God. Be the glory and dominion and power forever and ever. Amen. He loves me. He's freed me. And behold, verse seven. He's coming with the clouds. And every eye will see him, even those who pierced him. And all tribes of the earth will wail on account of Him. Even so. Amen.
[00:22:43] As we come to have this vision of Jesus, this understanding of Jesus and knowledge of Jesus, and trust in him, there is both a comfort to his saints and a warning to his enemies that his coming will be a day of judgment for those who will be judged, for those who are under his condemnation, for those who are under his wrath. This mighty warrior is not someone that you toy with.
[00:23:14] It's not someone that you play around with. It's not something that you manage your sin with or negotiate with. It's someone you bow yourself down before and say, lord, save me and forgive me and make me yours.
[00:23:28] That's who is coming. And that's who offers himself to the world.
[00:23:33] He is, as verse 8 says, the Almighty.
[00:23:38] He is God.
[00:23:40] We talked earlier about how he is man representing man who took on flesh, who lived and died for us in our place. And he is also God, the Alpha and the Omega, the one who is and who was and who is to come.
[00:23:59] There are great people in our lives, great people in the course of history.
[00:24:05] Maybe you like to read a biography or hear a story or a documentary sometime you read about certain people, you say, man, he's so cool.
[00:24:13] I want to be like him. Or he's so wise or so brave. And we have these heroes we look up to.
[00:24:19] Jesus is not a hero.
[00:24:21] Jesus is God.
[00:24:24] We don't just look up to him. We don't just admire him or be inspired by him. We, we worship him as the Alpha and the Omega, who was, who is, who was and who is to come.
[00:24:41] We have another picture of him in verse 12 when John turns to see the voice that was speaking.
[00:24:49] And on turning he sees seven golden lampstands.
[00:24:54] Imagery drawn from the Old Testament, from the temple and the Book of Revelation tells us that these seven lampstands are the seven churches.
[00:25:04] So he's there standing in the midst of his churches, symbolically speaking, and this is how Revelation will often speak, is symbolic. Even as we're seeing here, he sees Jesus there standing in the midst of these lampstands, one like a son of man, and he's clothed like a priest, with a long robe and a sash around his chest.
[00:25:25] What's interesting is the pictures that we have of Jesus here don't really give us any idea what he looks like in the ways that we are often curious and artists are often curious about, you know, what was the shape of his nose, was his ear connected or not? You know, all these kind of, these little details.
[00:25:47] There is an answer to those.
[00:25:50] Because Jesus was fully human.
[00:25:53] His nostrils are just a certain size and just a certain shape and that's He's a man.
[00:25:59] But. And we are given a picture of him here and one that helps us to understand him and glorify him.
[00:26:05] But it doesn't answer the questions that people are often want to know, but the questions that we really should know and the things that we should think about. God gives to us exactly what we need to hear. And one of those is that his eyes were like flame of fire.
[00:26:21] What does that exactly look like?
[00:26:23] I don't know, like a flame of fire.
[00:26:28] But I'll tell you, that generates a certain feeling in me that's very clear to approach Someone whose eyes are like a flame of fire is terrifying.
[00:26:40] Or consider his face another image of light. His face is John.
[00:26:46] No wonder he didn't see the shape of his nose when or doesn't describe it to us at least. His face was like the sun shining in full strength.
[00:26:58] When was the last time you looked at the sun?
[00:27:02] Hopefully you didn't.
[00:27:04] Hopefully it was one of these, like, kind of quick, oh, that's really bright. Don't look at that. Right.
[00:27:11] You can blind yourself.
[00:27:13] When Moses came down the mountain, his face shining like the glory with the glory of God. When he came down from the mountain after receiving the word of the Lord, it was so bright that the Israelites told him to cover up his face.
[00:27:29] That was Moses, reflecting the glory of God.
[00:27:35] Here is Jesus, the son of God in heaven. His face was like the sun, shining in full strength.
[00:27:47] The hairs of his head were white like wool, like snow.
[00:27:50] His feet were like burnished bronze. Another image of the temple of temple pillars, but also of the crushing power of Jesus's strength.
[00:28:04] He can smash things.
[00:28:07] He rules with authority and strength in his voice, like the roar of many waters.
[00:28:17] Maybe you've been to the ocean at some point in your life, hopefully.
[00:28:23] And you hear that sound and that's just on the beach, maybe when the tide gets going strong and it's moving and churning, roaring.
[00:28:34] Or maybe you've seen flash floods here in our desert or seen videos. Those hopefully haven't been in one where the water just moves through a canyon and the sound of it sounds like a freight train or something like that.
[00:28:50] Can you imagine trying to receive the word of God, hearing a voice like that?
[00:28:56] You might do what John did.
[00:29:01] He fell down at his feet as though dead.
[00:29:04] Does that mean he passed out?
[00:29:07] Maybe.
[00:29:10] Sometimes when people get really scared, they pass out and they look like they're dead. They're just gone.
[00:29:20] And then this king puts his right hand on John and says, fear not.
[00:29:34] And then he says a very terrifying thing. I am the first and the last, the living one. I died. And behold, I am alive forevermore. I have the keys of death and Hades.
[00:29:48] To the one who has decided that he is an enemy of this king, those words are very terrifying.
[00:29:58] But to the one who is loved by this king, to the one who is now speaking to his people and saying, there are things I want you to know.
[00:30:11] There are ways in which I want to prepare you and steady you. There are ways in which I want you to shape your life. And there are ways in which I want you to glorify Me and you belong to me.
[00:30:25] To hear that he is the first, the last, the living one, died and alive again, and that he has the keys of death and Hades. Death being the thing that we experience, Hades being the realm of the dead.
[00:30:39] This is great news.
[00:30:41] It means that your king, John's king is your protector.
[00:30:47] Absolutely nothing is going to come between you and Him. What could?
[00:30:55] He's everything.
[00:30:56] He is this one whom we are, who is being described to us here. And he is there, remember, at the beginning of all this, in the midst of his churches.
[00:31:07] He's there not only in heaven, but he is present with us.
[00:31:14] And the mystery of the seven stars that are in his right hand and the seven golden lampstands. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.
[00:31:24] And we'll spend time in the coming weeks considering his words to each of those seven churches.
[00:31:34] What happens when we are.
[00:31:39] When we rightfully fear the Lord, of course, in the way in which our hearts tremble before him, and we are reverent and we honor him as the one and true living God.
[00:31:49] But at the same time, we are not afraid of his judgment, but are comforted by his love. What happens when we fix our eyes on Jesus like this and receive that Word?
[00:32:05] The answer is that we are blessed in all kinds of ways.
[00:32:12] Our lives are made rich.
[00:32:16] Even our sufferings and trial and the persecution and the sadnesses that we face become blessings.
[00:32:25] And that's why the Word of God promises to us here in verse three. But blessed is the One who reads aloud the words of this prophecy. And blessed are those who hear it and who keep what is written in it.
[00:32:40] When we hear God's word, when we hold to it tightly, when we entrust ourselves to the King, we are encouraged, we are consoled, we are made brave, we are made wise, we are made bright to be his witnesses to produce in us. He produces in us a love for him and a love for others which leads to a great and glorious ending.
[00:33:08] So Jesus is not only the One who speaks these things, he is also the One who reveals to us and steadies us for the future.
[00:33:18] And he is also, finally, the One who blesses us in the future. He brings us to this ultimate and final goal.
[00:33:26] Blessing.
[00:33:28] Those words and that comforting hand to John where He says, fear not are matched by the words of blessing in verse three, amplified by the words in verse four. Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come.
[00:33:47] The words of love and freedom in verse 5, all of these things are added to us. The promise of his presence reminding us that the Lord is blessing us and will promises to bring us to a final blessed end.
[00:34:05] Jesus, in other words, not only prepares us for the future, but he also brings these things to completion.
[00:34:13] We don't know how long the time is between his first and second Coming.
[00:34:19] How much longer will we wait for Him? I don't know. Could be very short, could be very long from our perspective.
[00:34:30] But what we know is that there is an end.
[00:34:33] It's not just vanity after vanity. It's not just striving after the wind. There is an end, a destination, a point which is going to happen in God's absolute perfect timing, no mistakes.
[00:34:47] We're all headed in a very particular direction in which he is the consummation of all of these things.
[00:34:55] He will not delay his coming a single moment longer. He is bringing in exactly the full number of the elect. And once that mission is complete, everything will come to a complete and glorious end. He is not only the Living One, he is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. And we see that in that image I mentioned earlier, the image of the bride of Christ at the end of Revelation, the glorious bride in which he wipes every tear from our eyes, in which she is adorned herself like a priest, as he says, he makes us to be as we shine with the brightness and are a place, a temple, a dwelling place, fit even for his presence.
[00:35:40] So this is who Jesus is.
[00:35:42] This is who this is where Revelation starts.
[00:35:46] Not by saying, I bet you're curious about a lot of things. Let's tell you some stuff.
[00:35:51] But it starts with worship.
[00:35:54] It starts with Christ.
[00:35:56] It starts by centering everything that we are going to hear in Him.
[00:36:02] Just as life itself is described by Jesus being the Alpha and the Omega, this book is that way as well. It begins and ends with him and his glorious presence.
[00:36:17] So this book is given to us so that we would know Jesus and glorify Jesus and enjoy him now and forever.
[00:36:29] Let's do that, even this morning, and pray that God will continue to work this in us as we go through His Revelation. Let's pray.
[00:36:39] Our Heavenly Father, we thank you for the unveiling, the disclosing, the manifesting of our Lord and Savior, first in his first coming, in the virgin birth, in his many miracles, in his sending out of the apostles as they proclaimed him crucified and risen Lord, we ask that as he continues to preach this Word and as this apostolic message continues to be sent out into this world that you would help us to see and understand, be comforted by and made braver by his promises, his blessings, his glory, his work, the spirit that dwells within him, his divinity, his priestly nature as prophetic, his work as a prophet and as a king, his authority over the present, his authority over the future, the way he transforms us into his glorious likeness.
[00:37:42] Lord, we ask that you would help us to understand.
[00:37:47] Yes, the things that are to come.
