WEBVTT 1 00:00:00.240 --> 00:00:13.150 Let's hear God's word from first chronicles chapter seventeen. First chronicles seventeen is divided 2 00:00:13.269 --> 00:00:18.750 into or one could divide it into two parts, God's promise and then David's 3 00:00:18.789 --> 00:00:23.379 prayer or David's response to that promise. To night we cover the the first 4 00:00:23.379 --> 00:00:31.140 part of that God's promise to David. So let's hear God's word first chronicles 5 00:00:31.219 --> 00:00:38.530 seventeen. Now, when David lived in his house, David said to Nathan 6 00:00:38.570 --> 00:00:43.649 the Prophet, behold, I dwell in a house of Cedar, but the 7 00:00:43.689 --> 00:00:48.810 Ark of the Covenant, of Jehovah's Under a tent. And Nathan said to 8 00:00:48.890 --> 00:00:52.359 David, do all that is in your heart, for God is with you. 9 00:00:53.759 --> 00:00:57.679 But that same night the word of Jehovah came to Nathan. Go and 10 00:00:57.759 --> 00:01:02.439 tell my servant David. Thus says Jehovah, it is not you who will 11 00:01:02.520 --> 00:01:06.310 build, build me a house to dwell in, for I have not lived 12 00:01:06.390 --> 00:01:10.629 in a house since the day I brought up Israel to this day, but 13 00:01:10.750 --> 00:01:15.189 I have gone from tent to tent, from dwelling to dwelling in all places 14 00:01:15.430 --> 00:01:19.140 where I have moved with all Israel. Did I speak a word with any 15 00:01:19.219 --> 00:01:23.540 of the judges of Israel, whom I command to shepherd my people, saying, 16 00:01:23.140 --> 00:01:29.060 why have you not built me a house of Cedar? Now, therefore, 17 00:01:29.340 --> 00:01:33.890 thus set, thus shall you say to my servant David? Thus says 18 00:01:33.890 --> 00:01:38.129 Jehovah of Hosts. I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, 19 00:01:38.769 --> 00:01:42.730 to be a print, to be prince over my people Israel, and 20 00:01:42.890 --> 00:01:47.200 I have been with you wherever you have gone and have cut off all your 21 00:01:47.239 --> 00:01:51.959 enemies from before me. And I will make for you a name like the 22 00:01:52.040 --> 00:01:56.000 name of the great ones of the Earth, and I will appoint a place 23 00:01:56.120 --> 00:02:00.920 for my people Israel and will plant them that they may dwell in their own 24 00:02:00.040 --> 00:02:05.829 place and be disturbed no more, and violent men shall waste them no more, 25 00:02:06.030 --> 00:02:10.030 as formerly, from the time that I appointed judge as over my people 26 00:02:10.189 --> 00:02:15.900 Israel, and I will subdue all your enemies. Moreover, I declare to 27 00:02:16.020 --> 00:02:22.219 you that Jehovah will build you a house when your days are fulfilled, to 28 00:02:22.419 --> 00:02:27.259 walk with your father's. I will raise up your offspring after you, one 29 00:02:27.300 --> 00:02:31.289 of your own sons, and I will establish his kingdom and he shall build 30 00:02:31.289 --> 00:02:36.930 a house for me and I will establish his throne forever. I will be 31 00:02:37.129 --> 00:02:39.810 to him a father and he shall be to me a son. I will 32 00:02:39.849 --> 00:02:44.800 not take my steadfast love from him, as I took it from him who 33 00:02:44.919 --> 00:02:47.639 was before you, but I will confirm him in my house and in my 34 00:02:47.680 --> 00:02:54.400 kingdom forever, and His throne shall be established forever, in accords with all 35 00:02:54.479 --> 00:03:01.389 these words and accordance with all this vision. Nathan spoke to David, maybe 36 00:03:01.430 --> 00:03:14.580 seated. So David is king over Israel. He is one of the Kings, 37 00:03:14.659 --> 00:03:16.659 one of the great kings, so we might even say v King. 38 00:03:17.259 --> 00:03:23.259 I'm in the Old Testament. We think about the prominence of David in the 39 00:03:23.300 --> 00:03:29.650 psalms, in the historical books, even in the prophets, where him and 40 00:03:29.770 --> 00:03:32.370 his kingdom, in this promise that God makes here, comes up over and 41 00:03:32.610 --> 00:03:38.689 over and over again. We think we realize quickly how important David is in 42 00:03:39.210 --> 00:03:44.319 the whole of scripture. If you go, I think, to random people 43 00:03:44.360 --> 00:03:49.240 and ask them what stories do you know about the Bible off and they're going 44 00:03:49.360 --> 00:03:54.280 to be stories about David, one about his kingship, either his rise to 45 00:03:54.439 --> 00:04:03.150 power or various things that went on during his reign. God obviously uses David 46 00:04:03.270 --> 00:04:11.099 and his great plan of redemption, but David is particularly unique, even among 47 00:04:11.259 --> 00:04:15.540 other kings that God uses, because of what we have here in first chronicles 48 00:04:15.660 --> 00:04:23.699 seventeen. To No other king does God make a promise like this one. 49 00:04:25.129 --> 00:04:29.649 This promise is a covenant. We see it in the way that it's written, 50 00:04:29.769 --> 00:04:35.129 the structure that is laid out here. It's called a covenant and other 51 00:04:35.290 --> 00:04:40.920 portions of Scripture, and so that's why sometimes we refer to this particular moment 52 00:04:41.079 --> 00:04:46.759 in history as the Davidic covenant. We even have this particular name because of 53 00:04:46.839 --> 00:04:53.310 its great importance. But in order to understand its importance we have to understand 54 00:04:53.589 --> 00:04:59.389 the context in which it comes. So let's consider that this evening, consider 55 00:04:59.550 --> 00:05:03.069 the context in which this promise of God has made, why God makes these 56 00:05:03.189 --> 00:05:11.459 promises and and why it's important for us. Now does David's kingship matter to 57 00:05:11.620 --> 00:05:17.019 us in our lives? Well, the ancient Near East it was common for 58 00:05:17.180 --> 00:05:23.889 kings to build temples to their gods. You can imagine why, just from 59 00:05:23.930 --> 00:05:28.490 a political standpoint, that would be a good thing to do. In a 60 00:05:28.569 --> 00:05:30.810 sense, it would be an extension of your kingly power. Right, you've 61 00:05:31.009 --> 00:05:36.240 you've built yourself this palace that, when he says David lived in a house. 62 00:05:36.319 --> 00:05:41.839 You don't want to be thinking three bedroom to bath yard. You know 63 00:05:41.920 --> 00:05:45.319 that kind of thing. This is a house, this is a palace that 64 00:05:45.399 --> 00:05:48.720 David has built. The fact that it's made out of Cedar, which is 65 00:05:49.000 --> 00:05:54.310 mentioned here, is is no small thing. This is a house for a 66 00:05:54.389 --> 00:06:00.350 king. This is his his kingly palace, and so David is established there 67 00:06:00.430 --> 00:06:06.740 in his house and he he decides that he wants to build a house, 68 00:06:08.660 --> 00:06:12.300 a word that can also be used not only to describe a palace but a 69 00:06:12.500 --> 00:06:15.860 temple, a place for God to dwell, a palace for God. And 70 00:06:15.939 --> 00:06:18.730 this says I say it was a sort of a common thing. You can 71 00:06:18.810 --> 00:06:23.889 imagine the king having his Great Palace and then next to the palace was the 72 00:06:24.449 --> 00:06:29.689 throne room of his God's. It was an extension of kingly power and glory 73 00:06:29.810 --> 00:06:32.439 and in a sense it would add a lot of religious weight to what you 74 00:06:32.560 --> 00:06:35.800 did. In some other words, as a King, you're not only now 75 00:06:35.920 --> 00:06:41.839 exercising political power, but you're saying God is on my side. That's a 76 00:06:41.959 --> 00:06:45.959 pretty powerful thing. A lot of things have been done in our country in 77 00:06:46.079 --> 00:06:49.430 the name of God and the belief that God was on our side. This 78 00:06:49.589 --> 00:06:56.110 is true of places throughout history, and it's true as well in the ancient 79 00:06:56.149 --> 00:07:02.379 times. Now David wants to do this, but political motivations don't seem to 80 00:07:02.459 --> 00:07:08.259 be what's going on here. We remember that David is not just another King 81 00:07:08.459 --> 00:07:14.420 and God is not just another idol. David is God's anointed King. He 82 00:07:14.620 --> 00:07:18.569 is anointed by the one true God, who is a dablished David's King kingship 83 00:07:19.009 --> 00:07:25.769 with his mighty arm. So when David wants to give deference to God or 84 00:07:26.089 --> 00:07:30.920 give something to God, when David Sits in his seedar palace and looks down 85 00:07:31.959 --> 00:07:38.920 on the Ark and says something doesn't feel right about this. It seems to 86 00:07:39.040 --> 00:07:45.230 be an extension or an action that's coming from from to true piety. If 87 00:07:45.269 --> 00:07:47.550 you put yourself in David Shoes, you can see why you would feel that 88 00:07:47.790 --> 00:07:51.949 way. There you are in your palace, you look out and you say, 89 00:07:53.910 --> 00:07:56.750 I've spent all of done all of this work and all of these things 90 00:07:56.829 --> 00:08:00.339 because I believe that bringing the Ark to Jerusalem is, in a sense, 91 00:08:00.459 --> 00:08:03.699 to establish God's authority here. Is it right for God to be an a 92 00:08:03.819 --> 00:08:11.860 tent while I'm in this palace? Well, so David goes to Nathan a 93 00:08:11.060 --> 00:08:16.410 prophet, a man of God, a pious man, a good man, 94 00:08:16.290 --> 00:08:20.769 and he asks David, what do you think I should do? and He 95 00:08:20.930 --> 00:08:24.250 makes this comment. Behold, I dwell in a house of Cedar, but 96 00:08:24.370 --> 00:08:28.720 the Ark of the covenants of Jehovah is under a tent. And Nathan, 97 00:08:28.800 --> 00:08:31.919 the Prophet, says do all that is in your heart, for God is 98 00:08:33.039 --> 00:08:37.279 with you. David, Sir Nathan sort of gives him the go ahead. 99 00:08:37.320 --> 00:08:41.070 He says, I see no reason why this couldn't be. He doesn't exactly 100 00:08:41.629 --> 00:08:45.629 say that he should do it, but he says the the Lord, has 101 00:08:45.669 --> 00:08:50.389 been with you, and it's makes sense to me. But God has other 102 00:08:50.549 --> 00:08:56.419 plans. That's the context in which this comes and this chapter is about God's 103 00:08:56.460 --> 00:09:01.340 other plans. I'll just pause there and say this is a good reminder that, 104 00:09:01.500 --> 00:09:07.539 no matter how good an idea seems, it's not our piety or our 105 00:09:07.779 --> 00:09:13.529 good reasoning on which we should depend, but we depend on God, as 106 00:09:13.610 --> 00:09:16.250 we read in another place, unless God builds the house, the builders build 107 00:09:16.330 --> 00:09:20.409 in vain. And so we may have plans and intentions and desires to do 108 00:09:20.690 --> 00:09:26.919 things, but ultimately our trust must be in the Lord. So back to 109 00:09:28.039 --> 00:09:33.480 God's promise. Why does God reject David's plan? Why does? Why did 110 00:09:33.519 --> 00:09:37.669 he say no to David? He's going to say yes to Solomon. Solomon's 111 00:09:37.710 --> 00:09:43.750 going to build him a temple. He will eventually establish himself this way in 112 00:09:43.950 --> 00:09:50.110 in Jerusalem. So why does God say no to David's presumably pious and Godly 113 00:09:50.470 --> 00:09:56.940 Desire? Well, there's four different things. First of all, he wants 114 00:09:56.980 --> 00:10:03.779 to emphasize that he needs nothing from David. God does not need to receive 115 00:10:03.940 --> 00:10:07.690 something from David, and he says in this way. He says in Verse 116 00:10:07.809 --> 00:10:11.649 Five, for I have not lived in a house since the day I brought 117 00:10:11.690 --> 00:10:13.809 up. Is Real. To this day I've gone from ten to twenty, 118 00:10:13.850 --> 00:10:20.370 ten to tent dwelling to dwelling. I've been just fine without a temple. 119 00:10:22.559 --> 00:10:26.759 This is such a contrary thing to the way false gods and idols and idolatry 120 00:10:26.799 --> 00:10:33.399 usually worships or works idolatry, when humans create gods of their own image, 121 00:10:33.919 --> 00:10:39.389 how does it usually work? Well, usually there's all kinds of superstitious places 122 00:10:39.590 --> 00:10:43.789 and thing and things that you say in charms, that you do and this 123 00:10:43.990 --> 00:10:48.509 whole set of things that has to happen in order for the God to work 124 00:10:48.950 --> 00:10:54.059 to do his good or to do his bad. But God turns all that 125 00:10:54.179 --> 00:10:56.820 on its head and says, I've lived intense and I've done everything that I 126 00:10:58.019 --> 00:11:03.179 have done from this place. I do not need this. God is sufficient 127 00:11:03.659 --> 00:11:09.769 in himself. In particular, he needs nothing from David this. It leads 128 00:11:09.809 --> 00:11:15.009 to a second point, that it is God who is great and David is 129 00:11:15.090 --> 00:11:18.639 great because of God, not the other way around. God has not become 130 00:11:18.799 --> 00:11:24.240 supreme in Israel because David has lifted him up, because David has made him 131 00:11:24.240 --> 00:11:28.679 great. God reminds David and of the and us of this when he says 132 00:11:30.919 --> 00:11:33.750 that I brought you from the pastures. You were a shepherd and I have 133 00:11:33.909 --> 00:11:39.669 made you into a prince. God is great because he is great, not 134 00:11:39.870 --> 00:11:46.419 because David made him that way. So he reminds David that of his greatness. 135 00:11:46.500 --> 00:11:50.980 In this way, he reminds David that he doesn't need him or that 136 00:11:50.059 --> 00:11:54.220 he doesn't need a temple in order to do what he wants to do. 137 00:11:54.659 --> 00:12:01.419 He also reminds him that he never asked for one. God decides to worship 138 00:12:01.570 --> 00:12:05.929 how he God decides how we are to worship. He chooses where he is 139 00:12:05.009 --> 00:12:09.409 to dwell and how, among his people and he says, I've not commanded 140 00:12:09.529 --> 00:12:15.529 this. Among all the judges of this Israel, have I ever commanded why 141 00:12:15.610 --> 00:12:20.399 have you not built a house of Cedar for me? And then, finally, 142 00:12:20.480 --> 00:12:24.639 the final reason God rejects David's plan is because God has a better plan. 143 00:12:26.559 --> 00:12:28.399 And this is often the way, isn't it? We get frustrated, 144 00:12:28.480 --> 00:12:33.029 we don't understand why God does the way, the things that he does. 145 00:12:33.909 --> 00:12:37.190 We say to him, I thought through this, I acted wisely, I 146 00:12:37.389 --> 00:12:43.149 sought counsel, I acted according to good and holy motivations. And yet know 147 00:12:46.299 --> 00:12:52.460 why? Because God has another plan. God's not in heaven flipping a coin 148 00:12:52.700 --> 00:12:56.379 deciding at random what he will do and not do, or what will happen 149 00:12:56.500 --> 00:13:01.570 or not happen. Nothing is pushing or motivating god outside of himself. God 150 00:13:01.649 --> 00:13:11.250 Rejects David's plan because he has another plan. He has a promise. What 151 00:13:11.450 --> 00:13:16.840 is that plan? What is his promise to David? It's a three things 152 00:13:16.879 --> 00:13:22.879 here. First of all, he promises to make a great name for David. 153 00:13:24.480 --> 00:13:28.509 What a turn of events. God doesn't simply say no and walk away 154 00:13:28.710 --> 00:13:31.750 or no, thank you nice for thinking of it, but I'm fine. 155 00:13:33.470 --> 00:13:35.149 No, he says no I will make a great name for you. You 156 00:13:37.389 --> 00:13:39.110 want to build me a house, I'm going to build you a house. 157 00:13:39.190 --> 00:13:45.659 This really shows the greatness of God, particularly in His grace. But he 158 00:13:45.860 --> 00:13:50.139 is going to make a great name for David, he says in Verse Eight, 159 00:13:50.580 --> 00:13:54.850 like the name of the great ones of the earth. Let me just 160 00:13:56.049 --> 00:14:01.490 ask you. Has God done that? Well, yes, as I said 161 00:14:01.490 --> 00:14:05.610 at the beginning, David is one of the great ones. He is the 162 00:14:05.690 --> 00:14:09.159 one of the ones that we know, the people who don't even read the 163 00:14:09.279 --> 00:14:16.639 Bible know about King David. He is God has kept his promise to him. 164 00:14:16.240 --> 00:14:22.440 He has known throughout the Earth. There's a second thing God promises to 165 00:14:22.559 --> 00:14:26.669 do. He not only promises to establish him as a one of the great 166 00:14:26.789 --> 00:14:30.509 ones of the earth and make a name for him, he says in Verse 167 00:14:30.590 --> 00:14:35.350 Nine, and I will appoint a place for my people, Israel, and 168 00:14:35.470 --> 00:14:39.539 I will plant them that they may dwell in their own place and be disturbed 169 00:14:39.100 --> 00:14:46.940 no more. These two things together, David's great name and the place and 170 00:14:46.059 --> 00:14:52.450 protection for God's people, are meant to go together. As the king goes, 171 00:14:54.049 --> 00:14:58.970 so goes the people. That's the rule that we see over and over 172 00:14:58.090 --> 00:15:03.889 and over again in our own lives and in the pages of scripture. You 173 00:15:03.929 --> 00:15:07.129 see it in on your own lives. If you have bad father and mother, 174 00:15:07.279 --> 00:15:11.679 you typically have bad children, you have a bad CEO, a bad 175 00:15:11.720 --> 00:15:18.120 board of directors. The company is usually bad. The leadership often determines how 176 00:15:18.799 --> 00:15:22.669 the rest of the organization works, and the same as true in a country. 177 00:15:24.190 --> 00:15:30.710 So God making David Great is not just an individual promise for David, 178 00:15:30.870 --> 00:15:35.980 though it's that, but it's also a promise for the people. As the 179 00:15:35.059 --> 00:15:39.340 king goes, so goes the people. And he promises him not just a 180 00:15:39.940 --> 00:15:45.620 palace of Cedar to dwell in, but a place for his people, Israel. 181 00:15:46.419 --> 00:15:48.340 He will plant them that they may dwell in their own place and be 182 00:15:48.460 --> 00:15:54.889 disturbed no more. David will be able to defeat the enemies of the people 183 00:15:54.929 --> 00:15:58.850 because God is standing with him, riding with him, fighting with him, 184 00:16:02.210 --> 00:16:07.559 and so there will be this blessing for the people. Thirdly, there will 185 00:16:07.840 --> 00:16:12.240 be God promises a house. He know of this term is used flexibly throughout 186 00:16:12.240 --> 00:16:18.429 this chapter. A house or a kingdom through his son. So we read 187 00:16:18.549 --> 00:16:23.190 this in verses ten and eleven. He says, moreover, I will declare 188 00:16:23.269 --> 00:16:29.029 to you that Jehovah will build you a house? Well, David doesn't respond 189 00:16:29.029 --> 00:16:30.950 by saying, well, what do you mean? I already have a house. 190 00:16:30.669 --> 00:16:33.899 God's talking about something different. Not only is David going to have a 191 00:16:34.100 --> 00:16:38.299 palace to dwell in, but he's going to have a family. This is 192 00:16:38.379 --> 00:16:42.700 similar to the promise he makes to Abraham. He says in Verse Eleven, 193 00:16:42.740 --> 00:16:48.929 when the days are fulfilled, to walk with your father's I will raise up 194 00:16:48.129 --> 00:16:52.970 your offspring after you, one of your own sons, and I will establish 195 00:16:52.610 --> 00:16:57.850 his kingdom. So he's going to do this through his son, and this 196 00:16:59.090 --> 00:17:04.160 son is going to be a very special son. There's this adoption formula that 197 00:17:04.279 --> 00:17:11.039 God uses here. In verse thirteen. I will be to him a father 198 00:17:11.559 --> 00:17:18.549 and he shall be to me a son, an adoption formula that's used here 199 00:17:18.910 --> 00:17:22.789 for God to say I will beasts, that he will have this special place 200 00:17:22.950 --> 00:17:27.349 in my house, he will belong to me and I will take care of 201 00:17:27.470 --> 00:17:34.299 him. He promises even more than this, though, amazing things, great 202 00:17:34.460 --> 00:17:41.740 things. This House that he will establish will be forever. In Verse Twelve, 203 00:17:41.859 --> 00:17:48.529 he says that I will establish his throne forever. He says that I 204 00:17:48.569 --> 00:17:52.849 will not take my steadfast love from him. He says I will confirm him 205 00:17:52.890 --> 00:17:57.450 in my house and in my kingdom forever, and His throne shall be established 206 00:17:57.720 --> 00:18:04.319 forever, forever, forever, forever, Amen and Amen. This is what 207 00:18:04.480 --> 00:18:11.039 God is going to do for David's son. So all this language means that 208 00:18:11.240 --> 00:18:18.190 God's plan was God's promise, a covenant that he is making with his servant, 209 00:18:18.470 --> 00:18:22.910 and that's why David takes such a prominent place, because God is not 210 00:18:23.109 --> 00:18:29.180 just raising up a king and moving him on. God is establishing, through 211 00:18:29.339 --> 00:18:34.140 David and through his son, a kingdom that will last forever, a place 212 00:18:34.380 --> 00:18:40.500 and a people that will last forever, a dwelling place that God himself will 213 00:18:40.500 --> 00:18:42.849 dwell with them, because this son, he says, will build him a 214 00:18:42.930 --> 00:18:48.450 house, he will build him a temple, and there he will be with 215 00:18:48.609 --> 00:18:52.809 his God, will be with his king and with his king's people for all 216 00:18:52.890 --> 00:18:59.559 eternity. Now we don't read it here, but in other places, even 217 00:18:59.559 --> 00:19:03.519 in First Chronicles, Chapter Twenty eight, verse seven, for example, we 218 00:19:03.680 --> 00:19:10.470 read one other element of this covenant promise, though it's unconditional in a way. 219 00:19:10.670 --> 00:19:11.910 God says, I will do this, I will do this, I 220 00:19:11.950 --> 00:19:18.910 will do this. There is one stipulation attached in first chronicles twenty eight seven, 221 00:19:18.950 --> 00:19:30.019 we read I will establish his kingdom forever if he continues strong in keeping 222 00:19:30.140 --> 00:19:36.500 my commandments and my rules as he is today. That references to Solomon, 223 00:19:36.579 --> 00:19:45.289 Pre Solomon in particular, and refers to the promise to David's sons. Now, 224 00:19:45.369 --> 00:19:51.450 this promise certainly seems to find a measure of fulfillment in Solomon. Solomon 225 00:19:51.569 --> 00:19:56.519 gains the spirit of the Lord. Solomon Gains Great Wisdom and anointing. Solomon 226 00:19:56.599 --> 00:20:02.680 gains great power in his kingdom. is a kingdom of peace, of prosperity, 227 00:20:02.960 --> 00:20:10.670 of goodness all around, of great wealth and enjoyment. But Solomon does 228 00:20:10.789 --> 00:20:17.430 not follow the commandments of the Lord, particularly relating to this taking of many 229 00:20:17.509 --> 00:20:23.460 wives and his wives who worshiped other gods. This leads into false worshiped and 230 00:20:23.660 --> 00:20:30.539 even falling. Immediately following Solomon's Kingship, we see this great kingdom that God 231 00:20:30.700 --> 00:20:40.130 has established and promised split into and eventually both falling down. And by the 232 00:20:40.289 --> 00:20:45.609 time we get to Jesus's time, it's been four hundred, five hundred years 233 00:20:45.730 --> 00:20:52.039 since a King of David's line has been on the throne. A promise that 234 00:20:52.119 --> 00:20:56.839 in a measure seems to be fulfilled in such a great way and yet falls 235 00:20:56.880 --> 00:21:07.630 apart. This thing that happened, this falling apart of the dividic kingdom, 236 00:21:07.470 --> 00:21:14.869 does two things. One, it wepts our appetite for the things that will 237 00:21:14.910 --> 00:21:22.900 come and to it reminds us that of the of the king that will come 238 00:21:22.099 --> 00:21:26.619 and will establish those things. This king is, of course, our king, 239 00:21:27.220 --> 00:21:32.779 King Jesus. We read in Luke one hundred and thirty two that he 240 00:21:33.009 --> 00:21:38.890 is from David. The apostles a point and numerous ways, using the psalms, 241 00:21:38.970 --> 00:21:44.210 like Psalm too and Psalm one hundred ten, to remind us that he 242 00:21:44.650 --> 00:21:49.480 is the one who has been promised, he is from the Line of David, 243 00:21:49.559 --> 00:21:55.559 he do comes to do the father's will, he is the anointed one, 244 00:21:55.920 --> 00:22:00.640 and indeed this is all the people's hopes and expectations. When he rides 245 00:22:00.799 --> 00:22:07.230 into Jerusalem, into the place where David's throne has been established, where Solomon's 246 00:22:07.309 --> 00:22:15.069 Temple has been built and rebuilt now by this point, and here's they are, 247 00:22:15.740 --> 00:22:21.700 Jesus, the son of David Coming, and the people are channel yelling 248 00:22:21.859 --> 00:22:26.460 and chanting Hosanna, Hosanna, the king has come. Here he is, 249 00:22:26.819 --> 00:22:32.930 and who would it better be then this one? Who's doing miracles and teaching 250 00:22:32.970 --> 00:22:37.490 the things of God and teaching with authority. He's going to come and he's 251 00:22:37.529 --> 00:22:45.920 going to establish this kingdom. But then he's crucified and everyone says what, 252 00:22:48.039 --> 00:22:53.880 this was the king this who else could it be? This is the promised 253 00:22:53.920 --> 00:23:02.869 one of David. But what do we learn in the resurrection? What does 254 00:23:02.910 --> 00:23:07.069 Jesus tell us about that crucifixion, about his death? He says it was 255 00:23:07.430 --> 00:23:17.339 one hundred percent necessary so that peace could be established, not temporarily but forever, 256 00:23:18.740 --> 00:23:22.180 so that his throne could be established forever, so that the things that 257 00:23:22.940 --> 00:23:33.250 most hurt us, Satan, our sin, so that these things would be 258 00:23:33.369 --> 00:23:37.410 conquered. Jesus could have just kicked the Romans out if he had wanted to, 259 00:23:38.769 --> 00:23:41.640 but he wanted to do something much greater than that, and in order 260 00:23:41.680 --> 00:23:48.319 for that to happen, he needed to also be a sacrifice, not just 261 00:23:48.519 --> 00:23:55.559 a king, but a lamb who would go to the Cross and die for 262 00:23:55.710 --> 00:24:00.549 our sins so that we could have rest from them, so that we could 263 00:24:00.549 --> 00:24:06.390 have peace with God, in fellowship with him, so that God could dwell 264 00:24:06.549 --> 00:24:11.339 with us and not just kick us out of the land again. God in 265 00:24:11.500 --> 00:24:22.099 Jesus Christ establishes the throne of David Forever, forever, and this was the 266 00:24:22.220 --> 00:24:25.809 expectation. We read of this, not only in first chronicle seventeen, but 267 00:24:26.130 --> 00:24:32.049 listen to two places in the prophets, two verses from Isaiah and two verses 268 00:24:32.170 --> 00:24:37.599 from Ezekiel. I'll read the Ezekiel passage first, Ezekiel, twenty four and 269 00:24:37.799 --> 00:24:44.799 twenty five. My Servant, David shall be King over them and they shall 270 00:24:44.839 --> 00:24:48.279 all have one shepherd. They shall walk in my rules and be careful to 271 00:24:48.319 --> 00:24:52.230 obey my statutes. They shall dwell in the land that I gave to my 272 00:24:52.349 --> 00:24:56.950 servant, Jacob, where your fathers lived. They and their children and their 273 00:24:57.029 --> 00:25:03.829 children's triljan children shall dwell there forever, and Dave and my servant shall be 274 00:25:03.990 --> 00:25:11.539 their prince forever. I only said I'll read two verses. I'll keep that 275 00:25:11.660 --> 00:25:15.900 promise. You can keep reading there later. So these Egal thirty seven, 276 00:25:15.779 --> 00:25:22.049 Isaiah, chapter nine, versus six and seven. For unto us a child 277 00:25:22.250 --> 00:25:27.130 is born, for unto us a son is given, and the government shall 278 00:25:27.170 --> 00:25:32.809 be upon his shoulder and he shall his name, shall be called wonderful counselor 279 00:25:32.849 --> 00:25:38.400 mighty God, everlasting father, Prince of peace, of the increase of his 280 00:25:38.519 --> 00:25:45.559 government and of peace. There will be no end on the throne of David 281 00:25:47.440 --> 00:25:52.950 and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and 282 00:25:52.109 --> 00:25:59.309 with righteousness. From this time forth and Forevermore, the zeal of Jehovah of 283 00:25:59.430 --> 00:26:04.059 Hosts will do this. This is, of course, Jesus Right. This 284 00:26:04.180 --> 00:26:07.660 is what the prophets were speaking about. This is what everyone was anticipating, 285 00:26:07.980 --> 00:26:14.940 the son of David to come and establish his throne forever, that there would 286 00:26:14.940 --> 00:26:18.769 be no end to peace, that there would be no end to prosperity, 287 00:26:18.210 --> 00:26:25.609 no end to blessing, that you couldn't even measure it. So what does 288 00:26:25.690 --> 00:26:30.089 this mean for us? Well, this is everything. Des Covenant to David 289 00:26:30.289 --> 00:26:36.839 is our promises. Jesus is fulfillment of this covenant. Jesus is being this 290 00:26:37.079 --> 00:26:41.160 son. Means that we have a king that we can say God has fulfilled 291 00:26:41.319 --> 00:26:48.549 his promises in Jesus, and so that means we read the Old Testament accordingly. 292 00:26:48.630 --> 00:26:56.589 All the ways that I have been reading first chronicles and understanding these connections 293 00:26:56.670 --> 00:27:02.460 between David and Jesus are because of this, because of this important covenant that 294 00:27:02.579 --> 00:27:07.420 God makes, this promise that God makes, and certifies with his own blood 295 00:27:08.579 --> 00:27:15.690 on the cross. We read the Old Testament and an entirely in not an 296 00:27:15.730 --> 00:27:21.009 entirely different way, but in the way that God has set it up and 297 00:27:21.130 --> 00:27:25.890 the way that God has taught us. And so we come to see David's 298 00:27:25.890 --> 00:27:30.640 kingship and Solomon's kingship and the kings that come after them that are recorded in 299 00:27:30.799 --> 00:27:37.079 the chronicles to teach us about Jesus, his kingship and our life in him. 300 00:27:37.960 --> 00:27:41.599 But it also has a deep effects, not only in the way we 301 00:27:41.799 --> 00:27:45.109 read God's word, but how we apply it in our lives and how we 302 00:27:45.269 --> 00:27:52.390 think about things. Even now. Jesus indeed did ascend to the throne, 303 00:27:52.109 --> 00:27:59.619 was glorified and, I'm took the staying out of death. And yet at 304 00:27:59.660 --> 00:28:07.259 the same time, Hebrews to verse eight, reminds us that there is that 305 00:28:07.539 --> 00:28:11.019 that we do not yes, verse a, we do not yet see everything 306 00:28:11.059 --> 00:28:15.730 in subjection to him. Let me read that a little slower. We do 307 00:28:15.890 --> 00:28:22.170 not yet see everything in subjection to him. And this is true, isn't 308 00:28:22.170 --> 00:28:27.440 it? There is a way in which, though he rules and reigns in 309 00:28:27.559 --> 00:28:33.200 this supreme way and has established his throne forever and ever, there's still people 310 00:28:33.319 --> 00:28:38.759 fighting against him, the kings of this world, rattling their sabers and making 311 00:28:38.920 --> 00:28:42.509 counsels together, saying how will we destroy the Lord and his anointed one? 312 00:28:45.710 --> 00:28:52.349 This is hard to live under, and I mention this because it's tempting to 313 00:28:52.549 --> 00:28:57.900 look away from the promises in first chronicles, ift, seventeen, and Jesus 314 00:28:57.900 --> 00:29:03.779 is fulfillment of them, to other things, for example, to look away 315 00:29:03.819 --> 00:29:07.900 from the promises here and look to earthly politics or other kinds of things. 316 00:29:08.180 --> 00:29:12.569 US to put our trust and our hope and getting things right here in this 317 00:29:12.769 --> 00:29:17.730 world, making sure that we get all the our ducks in a row in 318 00:29:17.809 --> 00:29:23.319 our families, in our country. That's, of course important, but it's 319 00:29:23.359 --> 00:29:27.839 not going to establish peace forever and ever. It's not going to establish the 320 00:29:27.920 --> 00:29:33.039 throne of David and all eternity, it's not going to increase the government of 321 00:29:33.119 --> 00:29:41.230 Jesus Christ for all time. The only thing that will do that is God 322 00:29:41.869 --> 00:29:48.549 working through this promised one who has come. So as we live our lives, 323 00:29:49.630 --> 00:29:55.420 we let's live them in light of the promise. Let's live them in 324 00:29:55.500 --> 00:29:59.220 light of the king who rules and reigns over us and even though we do 325 00:29:59.339 --> 00:30:03.220 not yet see all things in subjection to him. We believe that all things 326 00:30:03.259 --> 00:30:10.049 are in subjection to him. The proof of the resurrection, with the work 327 00:30:10.130 --> 00:30:15.210 of his miracles, with his very words, with the spirit living and dwelling 328 00:30:15.250 --> 00:30:21.480 in us, how can we have any doubt? So let us be patient, 329 00:30:22.599 --> 00:30:26.759 but let us also be confident, for our king rules and reigns. 330 00:30:26.480 --> 00:30:32.480 God has fulfilled his promises and will bring all things to his good and perfect 331 00:30:32.519 --> 00:30:34.079 ends. Let's pray
