WEBVTT 1 00:00:01.040 --> 00:00:05.280 Oh, please remain standing, and let's turn our attention now to psalm forty 2 00:00:05.400 --> 00:00:31.219 five. Psalm forty five a Maskul of the sons of Cora, a love 3 00:00:31.339 --> 00:00:38.289 song. My heart overflows with a pleasing theme. I address my verses to 4 00:00:38.329 --> 00:00:44.609 the king. My tongue is like the pen of a ready scribe. You 5 00:00:44.729 --> 00:00:49.329 are the most handsome of the sons of men. Grace is poured upon your 6 00:00:49.450 --> 00:00:54.399 lips. Therefore, God has blessed you forever. Gird your sword on your 7 00:00:54.520 --> 00:00:59.799 thigh, O Mighty one, in your splendor and majesty, in Your Majesty, 8 00:00:59.920 --> 00:01:04.230 ride out victorious for the cause of Truth and meekness and righteousness. Let 9 00:01:04.310 --> 00:01:10.629 your right hand teach you awesome deeds. Your Arrows are sharp in the heart 10 00:01:10.670 --> 00:01:15.469 of the king's enemies, the peoples fall under you. Your throne, O 11 00:01:15.670 --> 00:01:19.140 God, is forever and ever. The scepter of your kingdom is a scepter 12 00:01:19.260 --> 00:01:25.780 of uprightness. You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness. Therefore, God, 13 00:01:26.140 --> 00:01:30.180 your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness. Beyond your companions, 14 00:01:30.980 --> 00:01:38.930 your robes are all fragrant with Murr and aloes and Cassia from ivory palaces 15 00:01:40.090 --> 00:01:45.609 stringed instruments make you glad. Daughters of kings are among your ladies of honor. 16 00:01:45.650 --> 00:01:53.040 At your right hand stands the Queen in Gold of Oh fear here, 17 00:01:53.239 --> 00:02:00.040 oh daughter, and consider and incline your ear. Forget your people and your 18 00:02:00.079 --> 00:02:04.989 father's house, and the king will desire your beauty, since he is your 19 00:02:05.109 --> 00:02:08.270 Lord. Bowed to him, the people of tire will seek your favor with 20 00:02:08.430 --> 00:02:14.830 gifts. The richest of the people. All glorious is the Princess, in 21 00:02:14.949 --> 00:02:21.460 her chamber, with robes interwoven with gold, in many colored robes, she 22 00:02:21.659 --> 00:02:25.699 is led to the king, with her virgin companions following behind her. With 23 00:02:25.860 --> 00:02:30.810 joy and gladness they are led along as they enter the Palace of the king. 24 00:02:31.969 --> 00:02:37.689 In place of your father's shall be your sons. You will make them 25 00:02:37.849 --> 00:02:42.449 princes and all the earth, I will cause your name to be remembered in 26 00:02:42.530 --> 00:02:49.240 all generations. Therefore, nations will praise you forever and ever. To the 27 00:02:49.240 --> 00:03:05.389 choir master, you may be seated. Well, here we have in Psalm 28 00:03:05.629 --> 00:03:10.469 forty five, what is identified for us as a song, in this particular 29 00:03:10.550 --> 00:03:15.780 case, a maskill not exactly sure what that is, but some kind of 30 00:03:15.860 --> 00:03:22.219 Song of the sons of Cora, sons of Cora were these levite to singers, 31 00:03:22.259 --> 00:03:27.139 a particular a particular class of Levites who were devoted to singing and to 32 00:03:27.250 --> 00:03:34.370 worship in the temple. But among those I'm here we have in particular that 33 00:03:34.610 --> 00:03:39.650 this narrator, one I will call a kind of poet preacher. We don't 34 00:03:39.689 --> 00:03:46.879 often get this kind of narrator's voice coming right out in a psalm. It's 35 00:03:46.919 --> 00:03:50.919 unique in that way and for many other reasons too. But here we have 36 00:03:51.280 --> 00:03:57.229 the heart of the the writer right here at the beginning. My heart overflows 37 00:03:57.310 --> 00:04:01.150 with a pleasing theme. I addressed my verses to the king. My tongue 38 00:04:01.229 --> 00:04:06.110 is the pen of a ready scribe. We begin all ready to hear, 39 00:04:06.349 --> 00:04:10.419 even before we get into the content of the Psalm, what we're in for. 40 00:04:11.580 --> 00:04:16.699 This poet preacher's heart is full. It's it begins over lowing. It 41 00:04:16.779 --> 00:04:20.819 doesn't begins at zero, at which something is added to an added to an 42 00:04:20.819 --> 00:04:26.410 attitude, till finally the point where he just starts expressing himself in this billowing 43 00:04:26.449 --> 00:04:31.930 way. No, his heart is already overflowing with a pleasing theme. He 44 00:04:32.089 --> 00:04:36.449 compares his tongue to the pen of a ready scribe. He's ready to do 45 00:04:36.610 --> 00:04:44.040 some talking. His heart is just expressive. He's full of these thoughts and 46 00:04:44.199 --> 00:04:49.759 he wants to write them down, to express, to express something that he 47 00:04:49.879 --> 00:04:56.750 describes as pleasing. Well, not only do we get that pleasing their sense 48 00:04:56.870 --> 00:05:00.670 of what we're in for, but also remember in the title we're told that 49 00:05:00.829 --> 00:05:06.699 we are going to hear a love Song, a love song. The wonder 50 00:05:06.819 --> 00:05:12.339 his heart is overflowing with a pleasing theme. Here we have a love song, 51 00:05:12.540 --> 00:05:15.420 and not just a love song, not just any love song, but 52 00:05:15.939 --> 00:05:23.769 a wedding song, even a royal wedding song. It's a psalm that is 53 00:05:24.129 --> 00:05:28.649 very unique in the whole salter and really the whole Bible. I'm perhaps there 54 00:05:28.689 --> 00:05:32.649 are there are some comparisons that we can make with the song of songs or 55 00:05:32.689 --> 00:05:38.720 the Song of Solomon, but even they're there are many significant differences. It's 56 00:05:38.759 --> 00:05:45.360 a wonderful Psalm, a very unique psalm, but I'll admit on a first 57 00:05:45.399 --> 00:05:46.879 reading, or if this is the first time you've heard it before, it 58 00:05:47.079 --> 00:05:51.350 might be a little hard to keep track of WHO's talking and who's being addressed. 59 00:05:51.389 --> 00:05:56.389 At one moment you're hearing the voice of this this poet preacher, and 60 00:05:56.430 --> 00:05:59.430 then the next thing you know, he's talking about a king and then he's 61 00:05:59.470 --> 00:06:01.149 talking to a daughter, and then there's an address to God and then he 62 00:06:01.269 --> 00:06:05.100 finally get to the end and he's talking again. I will cause your name 63 00:06:05.139 --> 00:06:09.860 to be remembered. It's a little bit hard to track the US in the 64 00:06:09.980 --> 00:06:13.459 eyes and the hes and the days. So I want to help you a 65 00:06:13.500 --> 00:06:17.569 little bit as we start here and just give you a brief overview. As 66 00:06:17.569 --> 00:06:23.649 I said, first it starts in the voice of this narrator, this poet 67 00:06:23.730 --> 00:06:27.569 preacher, who describes what he's going to do and then he sets about that 68 00:06:27.810 --> 00:06:35.000 task. He basically describes two people, first a king and then a queen. 69 00:06:36.399 --> 00:06:40.240 But this is not a king and a queen and their old age, 70 00:06:40.319 --> 00:06:45.040 who have been established for many, many years upon their thrones. Now this 71 00:06:45.240 --> 00:06:48.310 is the moment of their joining, this is the moment of their meeting, 72 00:06:48.430 --> 00:06:56.149 this is the celebration of them coming together and in this he's describing the king 73 00:06:56.350 --> 00:07:00.860 and his beauty and the queen in her beauty, the relationship between them. 74 00:07:02.019 --> 00:07:06.420 He describes these two people. At one point he and he even addresses them, 75 00:07:06.620 --> 00:07:13.620 but both and praises them and calls them to action. If you can 76 00:07:14.180 --> 00:07:18.290 try to imagine and this cast of characters. You have, on the one 77 00:07:18.370 --> 00:07:26.250 hand, this this this poet who has been called to compose perhaps a hymn, 78 00:07:27.209 --> 00:07:31.480 a psalm, of a poem for this wedding. You have the king 79 00:07:31.680 --> 00:07:34.680 there, whom he is addressing, the Queen, whom he is addressing, 80 00:07:34.759 --> 00:07:40.800 but then again, it's all done before God, all addressed to him. 81 00:07:42.199 --> 00:07:45.110 Those of you are yet to be married and are looking for a good text 82 00:07:45.230 --> 00:07:47.589 for your wedding, a wedding sermon, this, this might be a good 83 00:07:47.629 --> 00:07:55.189 one. Psalm forty five. Took that in your back pocket, but clearly 84 00:07:56.589 --> 00:08:00.860 it's more than that here. Just like a lot of people will use certain 85 00:08:00.939 --> 00:08:03.860 songs at their weddings that were first, originally used at some other wedding in 86 00:08:03.980 --> 00:08:07.899 the past and then we'll be used in the future, this psalm has that 87 00:08:09.019 --> 00:08:13.050 quality as well. In some ways it describes very well the key of the 88 00:08:13.410 --> 00:08:18.529 marriage of some king and Queen, some Israelite King and Queen, and scholars 89 00:08:18.649 --> 00:08:22.769 suggest that perhaps it was used by other kings and Queens as all as well 90 00:08:22.930 --> 00:08:28.800 down the line. But ultimately this psalm is speaking of the Israelite King, 91 00:08:28.879 --> 00:08:35.720 King Jesus, and his bride, which is the church. Here we have 92 00:08:37.440 --> 00:08:41.110 set before us not just a wedding song, a love song between a King 93 00:08:41.309 --> 00:08:46.389 and a Queen, a song describing them and calling them to certain things, 94 00:08:48.429 --> 00:08:54.350 but ultimately it's describing our husband and we, who are called a queen and 95 00:08:54.470 --> 00:09:01.139 a bride. This makes the Psalm very wonderful and very important for those of 96 00:09:01.179 --> 00:09:05.820 you are here this morning. And we thought about a Jesus is call to 97 00:09:05.340 --> 00:09:11.490 discipleship and to follow after him, even in suffering, taking up our cross 98 00:09:11.610 --> 00:09:16.970 and following after him, and we talked about how it's difficult sometimes to see, 99 00:09:16.009 --> 00:09:20.009 in the midst of the suffering the glory that is in the Cross. 100 00:09:20.370 --> 00:09:26.559 Well, hear that glory is revealed and as an on full display. The 101 00:09:26.919 --> 00:09:30.600 the cross is opened up for us, this marriage between us and our savior 102 00:09:30.759 --> 00:09:33.039 is opened up for us in a way that is shown to be full of 103 00:09:33.320 --> 00:09:39.190 glory and honor, and it's described in these majestic terms. Another way to 104 00:09:39.269 --> 00:09:46.309 think about Psalm forty five is that in Ephesians five we're told that this marriage, 105 00:09:46.389 --> 00:09:50.070 this institution of marriage, is something that God uses to point us forward 106 00:09:50.110 --> 00:09:54.860 or point us to, the marriage between Christ and the church, his love 107 00:09:54.980 --> 00:10:01.500 for us, our obedience and reverence for him. But some forty five takes 108 00:10:01.700 --> 00:10:05.299 another perspective on this marriage, not so much the daily interactions of it, 109 00:10:05.379 --> 00:10:09.409 but the very beginning of it, the start of it, what it was, 110 00:10:09.610 --> 00:10:13.769 what it looked like. How are to think about this covenant that God 111 00:10:13.929 --> 00:10:22.600 has made with us? It describes the royal character of our husband and the 112 00:10:22.679 --> 00:10:28.600 great beauty and loveliness of the bride. This is important because here we have 113 00:10:28.759 --> 00:10:33.200 the spirit of God giving us a window into what Christ has done for us. 114 00:10:35.389 --> 00:10:41.110 So let's begin with the preachers words here, in verse two, he 115 00:10:41.230 --> 00:10:46.870 begins with a description and praise of the king, first by describing him in 116 00:10:48.029 --> 00:10:52.460 terms of how handsome he is. Not just a handsome guy, not just 117 00:10:52.620 --> 00:10:56.779 a really good looking guy, but the most handsome of the sons of men, 118 00:10:58.059 --> 00:11:01.899 of all men in all time. He is the best, the most 119 00:11:03.059 --> 00:11:07.049 handsome. And yet as even though he goes on to describe his lips, 120 00:11:07.090 --> 00:11:13.929 it's not described in physical terms, is it? Grace is poured out on 121 00:11:13.049 --> 00:11:18.799 your lips. What makes King Jesus so beautiful? Isaiah tells us, and 122 00:11:18.879 --> 00:11:24.039 I in Isaiah fifty three, that he had no former beauty here in his 123 00:11:24.120 --> 00:11:28.799 earthly ministry. There was nothing to be impressive about. Nobody walked around and 124 00:11:28.879 --> 00:11:31.120 said, you know, Jesus, that great miracle or worker, and what 125 00:11:31.240 --> 00:11:37.429 a good looking guy is to nobody said that about him. He had no 126 00:11:37.669 --> 00:11:45.470 form and no no beauty, and yet he is beautiful, the most handsome 127 00:11:45.509 --> 00:11:50.620 among the sons of men. Why? Because grace is poured out on his 128 00:11:50.779 --> 00:11:54.899 lips. If you take a turn with me to Isaiah Sixty one, or 129 00:11:56.059 --> 00:12:01.009 you can just listen as well, want you to hear what it means to 130 00:12:01.129 --> 00:12:07.610 have grace abhorred on the lips. In Isaiah Sixty one, verses one through 131 00:12:07.769 --> 00:12:13.809 three, we read this the spirit of the Lord God is upon me because 132 00:12:13.850 --> 00:12:18.799 he has anointed me. Let me pause just there for a moment. You 133 00:12:18.879 --> 00:12:22.759 remember that very at the very beginning of Isaiah, Isaiah said I am unclean, 134 00:12:22.720 --> 00:12:28.200 I'm unfit to be this prophet, I am a man of Unclean Lips, 135 00:12:28.000 --> 00:12:33.669 and the Lord touched him and cleansed him. And here he's recognizing that. 136 00:12:33.750 --> 00:12:35.950 He's going back to that and he says because the Lord has anointed me. 137 00:12:37.110 --> 00:12:41.110 What here's the grace part. To bring good news to the poor. 138 00:12:41.190 --> 00:12:45.779 He has sent me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to 139 00:12:45.820 --> 00:12:50.899 the captives and the opening of the prison to those who are bound to proclaim 140 00:12:50.980 --> 00:12:54.179 the year of the Lord's favor, in the day of vengeance of our God, 141 00:12:54.940 --> 00:12:58.970 to comfort all who mourn, to grant to those who mourn in Zion, 142 00:12:58.090 --> 00:13:01.970 to give them a beautiful head dress instead of ashes, the oil of 143 00:13:03.129 --> 00:13:07.649 gladness, instead of mourning, the garment of praise, instead of a faint 144 00:13:07.690 --> 00:13:13.879 spirit, that they may be called Oaks of righteousness, the planting of the 145 00:13:13.000 --> 00:13:20.279 Lord that he may be glorified. It goes on. This is what it 146 00:13:20.399 --> 00:13:24.440 means to have one's lips anointed with grace, and that's why it's beautiful, 147 00:13:24.879 --> 00:13:31.149 because these promises are coming out from the king, and that promises of goodness 148 00:13:31.269 --> 00:13:37.990 and grace. We are a poor bride. The Psalm will go on to 149 00:13:39.110 --> 00:13:43.259 describe us in our great beauty, in our great loveliness and majesty. But 150 00:13:43.419 --> 00:13:48.299 where does that come from? How do we become beautiful? We're told throughout 151 00:13:48.299 --> 00:13:52.419 the scriptures that this is not our our natural state. As children of Adam, 152 00:13:54.019 --> 00:13:58.289 we're born poor and sinful and miserable, loaded down with debts, those 153 00:13:58.330 --> 00:14:03.610 who have been prostituting themselves after other gods we have been covering ourselves with make 154 00:14:03.649 --> 00:14:09.409 up and disgusting dress as a way to sort of pass ourselves off as beautiful. 155 00:14:09.490 --> 00:14:13.759 In some way. We are despised and full of shame, but not 156 00:14:13.080 --> 00:14:20.440 here, not hot and psalm forty five. Why? Because the king has 157 00:14:20.480 --> 00:14:24.909 spoken grace. The king has reached out to one that is low and piled 158 00:14:24.950 --> 00:14:28.870 up with debts and is paid the debts off and has brought her into his 159 00:14:30.389 --> 00:14:35.190 kingdom and into his palace and has put on her robes of beauty in his 160 00:14:35.350 --> 00:14:41.779 calling her his. She Has Majesty and honor and loveliness because it's been given 161 00:14:41.820 --> 00:14:48.899 to her by the grace of God. This description of the king goes on. 162 00:14:50.259 --> 00:14:56.090 Not only has he handsome, not only is grace been poured out on 163 00:14:56.210 --> 00:15:01.009 his lips, but he has powerful, he is pat he has power, 164 00:15:01.090 --> 00:15:05.690 he has authority and Majesty. This is not just a pretty face, but 165 00:15:05.809 --> 00:15:09.679 he is a valiant king. Notice the verse of Verse Three. Gird your 166 00:15:09.759 --> 00:15:13.399 sword on your thigh, Almighty one, in your splendor and Your Majesty, 167 00:15:15.679 --> 00:15:20.240 the most Regal Prince you can imagine, seated on his throne or on his 168 00:15:20.399 --> 00:15:24.950 great horse, his sword on his side, ready as verse for says, 169 00:15:24.190 --> 00:15:33.830 to ride out victoriously. He's not riding out to gain a victory, but 170 00:15:33.990 --> 00:15:39.019 one who rides out in victory, who rides out knowing what will be accomplished. 171 00:15:39.019 --> 00:15:41.539 And notice how he rides out as well. In Verse Four. He 172 00:15:41.659 --> 00:15:46.940 doesn't ride out, as so many kings do, to conquer and be victorious 173 00:15:46.019 --> 00:15:52.929 because of their pet projects, their greedy gain, their personal vendettas and scores 174 00:15:54.049 --> 00:15:58.370 to settle. What does this king ride out for? For the cause of 175 00:15:58.490 --> 00:16:04.279 truth and meekness and righteousness. It's the language of superheroes, right, except 176 00:16:04.320 --> 00:16:10.080 it's true. Except this is God himself, the Great Prince of princes, 177 00:16:10.159 --> 00:16:12.360 the Great King of Kings, the Lord of Lords, who does these things 178 00:16:12.960 --> 00:16:18.110 not in a pretender cartoony way, but actually accomplishes them. He rides out 179 00:16:18.190 --> 00:16:23.629 for Truth and for meekness and righteousness. The so the the poet preacher says, 180 00:16:23.629 --> 00:16:30.549 let your right hand teach you awesome deeds. He rides out in victory 181 00:16:30.629 --> 00:16:36.139 and he accomplishes it, doesn't he our Lord and our savior, defeats the 182 00:16:36.299 --> 00:16:41.539 tyranny of Satan. He brings down the force of the law that once lay 183 00:16:41.580 --> 00:16:45.820 it was laid upon us with its legal demands. He makes it wonderful and 184 00:16:45.860 --> 00:16:49.850 beautiful to us again. He breaks the tyranny of Satan, he takes the 185 00:16:49.929 --> 00:16:56.370 sting out of death and he makes those who are poor and meek and humble 186 00:16:56.929 --> 00:17:02.600 rise up in victory and his name, his arrows are sharp. Verse Five 187 00:17:02.720 --> 00:17:07.000 says in the heart of the king's enemies, the People's fall before you. 188 00:17:07.400 --> 00:17:14.279 This king is mighty and strong and he never ever misses. He never misses, 189 00:17:15.750 --> 00:17:22.309 his sword at his side, his arrows in his bow. Everything he 190 00:17:22.430 --> 00:17:26.829 sets out to do, he accomplishes. Every target, he hits and he 191 00:17:26.910 --> 00:17:34.059 wins the day for those whom he loves. He then goes on in verses 192 00:17:34.140 --> 00:17:44.369 six through nine and says something very strange about this king. He says your 193 00:17:44.529 --> 00:17:48.369 throne o God is forever and ever. The scepter of your kingdom is a 194 00:17:48.410 --> 00:17:53.650 scepter of uprightness. You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness. So whom is 195 00:17:53.730 --> 00:17:59.759 he addressing here now? is He addressing the king, or is he addressing 196 00:17:59.799 --> 00:18:04.440 God? Goes on in verse I guess it says the second half of Seven. 197 00:18:04.599 --> 00:18:10.440 There therefore, God, your God, has anointed you with the oil 198 00:18:10.519 --> 00:18:15.990 of gladness beyond your companions, the robes of all fragrant with murror and aloes 199 00:18:15.109 --> 00:18:22.150 and Cassio. WHO's he addressing? There? See Addressing God and one instance, 200 00:18:22.230 --> 00:18:26.900 and then returns to address the King. Well, it is one possibility, 201 00:18:30.059 --> 00:18:33.099 but the way Hebrews puts it makes a think that perhaps he is addressing 202 00:18:33.180 --> 00:18:40.539 this king as God. The author of the Book of Hebrews and quotes this 203 00:18:40.660 --> 00:18:47.450 very verse in Hebrews Chapter One when he's declaring that Christ is more glorious than 204 00:18:47.690 --> 00:18:52.690 the angels, more glorious than all the sons of men. We read in 205 00:18:53.490 --> 00:18:57.720 Ver in chapter one, verse six. But of the son, he says, 206 00:18:59.920 --> 00:19:03.519 your throne o God is forever and ever the scepter of uprightness, is 207 00:19:03.519 --> 00:19:07.720 the scepter of your kingdom. You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness. Therefore, 208 00:19:07.799 --> 00:19:11.190 God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond 209 00:19:11.349 --> 00:19:18.309 your companions. However we take this, it's clear. The main thing that 210 00:19:18.390 --> 00:19:22.150 the Bible is teaching us here, isn't it? Our King, Jesus, 211 00:19:22.150 --> 00:19:26.539 is not just another one of the sons of men. He's not even an 212 00:19:26.579 --> 00:19:32.460 angel in all their beauty and glory and power and majesty. He is above 213 00:19:32.500 --> 00:19:34.660 all that he is the king of Kings, the Lord of Lords, he 214 00:19:34.819 --> 00:19:41.809 is God himself, and it's with this kingdom, the scepter of uprightness, 215 00:19:41.569 --> 00:19:45.849 it is out of this that he goes forth, that he is anointed by 216 00:19:47.009 --> 00:19:52.279 the father with this oil of gladness. His robes are all fragrant with Mur 217 00:19:52.480 --> 00:19:56.119 and aloes and Cassia, in such a way that, even when he has 218 00:19:56.400 --> 00:20:03.519 moved from one place to another, the smell remains. He is pleasant and 219 00:20:03.720 --> 00:20:10.190 sweet wherever he goes. This great description of the setting around him. Now, 220 00:20:10.630 --> 00:20:14.630 in Verse Eight, from Ivory Palaces, stringed instruments make you glad, 221 00:20:14.710 --> 00:20:21.740 daughters of kings, princesses from around the world are among your ladies of honor, 222 00:20:22.859 --> 00:20:29.940 and they're among them all, among all these princesses after princesses after princesses. 223 00:20:30.099 --> 00:20:38.410 At her his right hand, stands the queen, dressed in the gold 224 00:20:40.289 --> 00:20:45.490 of Oh fear, oh fear, describing a place where it's it is said 225 00:20:45.609 --> 00:20:52.200 that very pure gold came from the best of the best, the way Psalm 226 00:20:52.319 --> 00:20:56.319 Twenty nine talks about the Cedars of Lebanon. Right, everyone knows about the 227 00:20:56.359 --> 00:21:02.119 Cedars of Lebanon. Here it's the gold of O fear. There she is 228 00:21:03.480 --> 00:21:07.069 beautiful. Now, having introduced her and brought her onto the scene, this 229 00:21:07.269 --> 00:21:12.789 poet preacher turns to this Queen and he says to her, here, oh 230 00:21:12.869 --> 00:21:21.299 daughter, and consider incline your ear, forget your people and your father's house, 231 00:21:21.460 --> 00:21:29.380 and the king will desire your beauty. For some ladies have grown up 232 00:21:29.460 --> 00:21:33.769 in a good home and in a good family, perhaps taking on their husband's 233 00:21:33.769 --> 00:21:38.329 name is a little bit sad. But for those who grow up and wretched 234 00:21:38.490 --> 00:21:44.769 households, in and with wretched from wretched places and whose families have done nothing 235 00:21:44.849 --> 00:21:48.359 but destroy them, and if they're brought into relationship with a husband who loves 236 00:21:48.440 --> 00:21:55.440 them and in a family that desires them, perhaps there's no greater joy than 237 00:21:55.519 --> 00:22:00.359 to forget one's past and be gone with one's house and be joined to the 238 00:22:00.480 --> 00:22:07.829 king. This second scenario is our story. We Lat a happily give up 239 00:22:08.029 --> 00:22:14.470 the old ways. We were once children of Wrath, the Bible says, 240 00:22:14.589 --> 00:22:18.900 belonging to the father of lies, but when we are adopted as his sons, 241 00:22:18.940 --> 00:22:22.420 we take on a new name. Or here the metaphor is marriage, 242 00:22:22.819 --> 00:22:26.339 when we are brought by the great king, our great husband and he says, 243 00:22:26.700 --> 00:22:30.970 come and be mine, forget your people, forget your father's house. 244 00:22:32.329 --> 00:22:37.049 The Queen stands there in her beauty. It says, no problem, no 245 00:22:37.329 --> 00:22:41.450 problem. I am yours and he is mine. His banner over me is 246 00:22:41.529 --> 00:22:48.079 love, he is our Lord, and so we bow to him and as 247 00:22:48.279 --> 00:22:53.039 we do so we become the most beautiful of all the women in the world. 248 00:22:55.000 --> 00:22:57.359 People from far away places, the people of Tire, will seek your 249 00:22:57.440 --> 00:23:02.869 favor with gifts. The richest people of the world will come and bow down 250 00:23:02.990 --> 00:23:07.230 before the church, before God's people, because of what he has done, 251 00:23:07.990 --> 00:23:11.750 because they share in his glory and in His Majesty, because they have been 252 00:23:11.980 --> 00:23:21.500 loved by him, embraced and brought into his arms. And there she is 253 00:23:21.539 --> 00:23:27.490 in verse thirteen, this Great Queen, this Princess, all glorious, is 254 00:23:27.890 --> 00:23:34.730 the princess in her chamber, with robes interwoven with gold and in many colored 255 00:23:34.769 --> 00:23:40.049 robes, she is led to the king, with her virgin companions following behind 256 00:23:40.089 --> 00:23:45.039 her. They are not sad, they are not mourning, they're not wishing 257 00:23:45.279 --> 00:23:49.400 that something else could be no, they are led along with joy and gladness 258 00:23:49.759 --> 00:23:59.069 as they enter into the palace of the king, and this marriage this marriage 259 00:23:59.069 --> 00:24:04.589 will result in great, great blessing. It'll be a fruitful marriage. The 260 00:24:04.789 --> 00:24:08.750 in place of your father's shall be your sons and you will make them princes 261 00:24:08.869 --> 00:24:14.740 and all the earth. Adam and Eve were called to be fruitful and multiple 262 00:24:14.859 --> 00:24:19.019 by under God's rule, and they failed. They failed. They were kicked 263 00:24:19.059 --> 00:24:25.410 out of the garden, having sinned. Their progeny immediately gives agains, killing 264 00:24:25.490 --> 00:24:30.609 each other. The family line begins destroying and falling apart as fast as it 265 00:24:30.730 --> 00:24:40.359 begins. But not so with Jesus, in Christ, she fills the earth 266 00:24:40.400 --> 00:24:45.440 with his progeny and to them for all times, this poet and preacher will 267 00:24:45.519 --> 00:24:51.440 cause, and has caused these things to be remembered that every nation, as 268 00:24:51.480 --> 00:24:56.309 the Gospel spreads out and more and more are gathered in the nation's do praise 269 00:24:56.349 --> 00:25:00.950 him forever and ever, remembering this very song. Thousands and thousands of years 270 00:25:02.029 --> 00:25:07.069 later, here we are yet again, joining our voices with the great chorus 271 00:25:07.220 --> 00:25:14.019 of God's people, hearing of the love of our Savior, the King's Great 272 00:25:14.099 --> 00:25:19.579 Majesty and His name that he is put upon us. This is what it 273 00:25:19.740 --> 00:25:25.849 means to be married to Christ. This, it was, what it means 274 00:25:25.930 --> 00:25:30.049 that we have been bound to him in love. This is what he gave 275 00:25:30.250 --> 00:25:36.039 his very life for, so that we could be made beautiful and lovely, 276 00:25:37.039 --> 00:25:41.680 so that our sins could be washed away in our garments could be wide as 277 00:25:41.759 --> 00:25:48.920 the snow and as pure as gold. When we think of the suffering that 278 00:25:48.000 --> 00:25:55.670 we face in this world. Let this song be in your hearts. Consider, 279 00:25:56.910 --> 00:25:59.670 as we are called, in Versi Lah, in verse ten. Here, 280 00:25:59.869 --> 00:26:04.259 oh daughter, consider, incline your ear, lean in, listen to 281 00:26:04.380 --> 00:26:10.859 what the Lord is saying. Forget the old ways. You have been bought 282 00:26:11.019 --> 00:26:18.849 and redeemed and brought into a wonderful relationship with your Lord and Savior. May 283 00:26:18.930 --> 00:26:22.490 Our hearts overflow with this great love for the king. May Our voices sing 284 00:26:22.650 --> 00:26:26.690 his praises, of our husband, and when anything ever seeks to come in 285 00:26:26.849 --> 00:26:33.079 between us, when Satan whispers in his ear and says no, I don't 286 00:26:33.119 --> 00:26:37.640 think so. I don't think you're worthy enough, I don't think you belong 287 00:26:37.720 --> 00:26:42.680 enough, I think you're too guilty. Cast him aside. Say This is 288 00:26:42.920 --> 00:26:48.150 between me and my Lord. He is my husband, I belong to him 289 00:26:48.509 --> 00:26:55.630 and you have no business being here. He is my love and his promise 290 00:26:55.710 --> 00:27:00.670 for me is forever. May God implant these truth so deep in our hearts 291 00:27:00.710 --> 00:27:03.740 that we might never forget them. Let us pray
