WEBVTT 1 00:00:01.360 --> 00:00:04.919 Well, if you're able, please remain standing and let's hear God's word now, 2 00:00:04.919 --> 00:00:13.230 from first chronicles, chapter fourteen. First Chronicles Fourteen, verses one through 3 00:00:13.310 --> 00:00:22.539 seven. and Hiram, king of Ti or, Sent Messengers to David and 4 00:00:22.820 --> 00:00:28.699 Cedar Trees, also masons and carpenters to build a house for him. And 5 00:00:28.820 --> 00:00:35.100 David knew that Jehovah had established him as king over Israel and that his kingdom 6 00:00:35.219 --> 00:00:41.049 was highly exalted for the sake of his people, Israel, and David took 7 00:00:41.090 --> 00:00:46.729 more wives in Jerusalem, and David fathered more sons and daughters. These are 8 00:00:46.770 --> 00:00:52.000 the names of the children born to him in Jerusalem. Shamua, Shoh Bob, 9 00:00:52.240 --> 00:00:58.159 Nathan, Solomon, ibahar, Eli Shua, El Pellet, Noga, 10 00:00:58.840 --> 00:01:07.670 nephegg Jafia, Elishama, Biliada and eliphelet Ay. God bless his word to 11 00:01:07.750 --> 00:01:25.019 us. Please be seated. Sometimes people wonder why we should read the Old 12 00:01:25.099 --> 00:01:33.450 Testament, wonder why it's all that important, given that we have the revelation 13 00:01:33.689 --> 00:01:38.609 of Jesus Christ. The Bible itself tells us that the Old Testament is and 14 00:01:38.890 --> 00:01:46.969 the things in it are types, shadows, things pointing US toward this greater 15 00:01:47.200 --> 00:01:52.319 reality. That we have in Jesus. The Bible tells us that into the 16 00:01:52.439 --> 00:01:56.359 things that we have in the New Testament that are revealed there, the prophets 17 00:01:56.439 --> 00:02:01.469 in the Old Testament longed to know, longed to be revealed. So why 18 00:02:01.590 --> 00:02:07.469 the Old Testament? Why not just read the new? Well, there's a 19 00:02:07.509 --> 00:02:14.229 hundred different good reasons for that, but I'll give you one tonight. One 20 00:02:14.389 --> 00:02:23.060 reason is that by studying the types in the shadows we come to understand something 21 00:02:23.099 --> 00:02:29.539 about the things that they point to the reality. It's an imperfect analogy, 22 00:02:29.659 --> 00:02:34.210 but maybe it's concerned comparable to the way that proverbs and the way that God 23 00:02:34.330 --> 00:02:38.689 tells us in proverbs to study the ants so that we might learn to work, 24 00:02:39.289 --> 00:02:44.840 learn what good work means. Why would you study the ants when there's 25 00:02:44.879 --> 00:02:46.960 examples of good work all around you? Or you might get to do the 26 00:02:47.039 --> 00:02:52.800 work yourself. If human work is ultimately the goal, why not just study 27 00:02:52.879 --> 00:02:58.990 that? Well, because God has revealed himself in various places and in various 28 00:02:58.990 --> 00:03:02.629 ways that are good for us to study. So even though the ants or 29 00:03:02.710 --> 00:03:07.949 maybe a smaller example of our work, in other ways they help us understand 30 00:03:08.110 --> 00:03:15.300 how to work, greatly fill out and and show to us, the things 31 00:03:15.419 --> 00:03:22.300 we are to understand about this larger topic. Bold testaments is in some ways 32 00:03:22.379 --> 00:03:25.379 like that. It's true that the establishment of David on his throne is a 33 00:03:25.580 --> 00:03:31.530 tiny, tiny little thing compared to the establishment of Jesus Christ on His throne 34 00:03:31.569 --> 00:03:38.330 in heaven. And yet nevertheless God has revealed himself there and is called us 35 00:03:38.370 --> 00:03:44.599 to study it so that we might understand the greater things. There's something that 36 00:03:44.719 --> 00:03:49.639 he reveals especially there that we don't get in the New Testament, that we 37 00:03:49.680 --> 00:03:54.319 don't get in other places, and so that's one reason why we study and 38 00:03:54.479 --> 00:04:01.949 read the Old Testament and first chronicles in particular. Here we hear here, 39 00:04:02.030 --> 00:04:08.069 in this place, we hear with our ears the establishment of David's house. 40 00:04:08.150 --> 00:04:15.699 Dave had coming in to Jerusalem and really taking his place is king, and 41 00:04:15.860 --> 00:04:18.660 it points us, as we study it and think about it, to the 42 00:04:18.699 --> 00:04:24.970 establishments of Jesus on His throne, and in that we find much hope and 43 00:04:25.129 --> 00:04:30.970 good news and comfort in our lives. So let's consider God's word in first 44 00:04:30.970 --> 00:04:35.850 chronicles fourteen versus one through seven. Well, as I said, we have 45 00:04:36.089 --> 00:04:42.879 here the establishment of David's house. I mean that in two ways. His 46 00:04:43.160 --> 00:04:49.040 Physical House later on kings will have these things called castles, other forms of 47 00:04:49.199 --> 00:04:56.829 houses that they might have, but also his, his family house. Both 48 00:04:56.949 --> 00:05:00.029 are here. In verses one through two, we read about that physical building, 49 00:05:00.069 --> 00:05:03.870 and then in verses three through six, we read about his family, 50 00:05:04.990 --> 00:05:12.620 this establishment of his house in Jerusalem. Now this is important because there's a 51 00:05:12.779 --> 00:05:17.660 contrast that the chronicler is making here. You might remember back in chapter ten, 52 00:05:17.699 --> 00:05:26.170 verse six, that something very tragic happened to Saul. We read there. 53 00:05:26.569 --> 00:05:32.009 Thus Saul died, he and his three sons and all his house died 54 00:05:32.170 --> 00:05:40.199 together. Saul, in his failures as king, was never established. He 55 00:05:40.399 --> 00:05:45.319 was made king, he was annointed as king, he did some kingly things, 56 00:05:45.439 --> 00:05:51.629 but that house, the establishment of his rule, never really happened because 57 00:05:51.870 --> 00:05:56.990 he got away from the Lord. He didn't call on the Lord, he 58 00:05:57.110 --> 00:06:00.509 didn't look to the Lord, as we considered last week in the arc and 59 00:06:00.629 --> 00:06:08.379 in other ways as well. David, however, is different. God has 60 00:06:08.459 --> 00:06:14.740 put his blessing on this servant of his. He is given a David a 61 00:06:14.860 --> 00:06:20.689 great faith and he is establishing David according to his promises. They see that 62 00:06:20.810 --> 00:06:26.089 in several ways here. The first way you see that is in Hiram's help. 63 00:06:27.370 --> 00:06:30.850 We read in verse one that hire them, the king of Tire, 64 00:06:30.050 --> 00:06:34.519 Sent Messengers to David Ya also send some of some other, some other things, 65 00:06:35.160 --> 00:06:41.240 cedar trees, Mason's, carpenters, all for a particular purpose, to 66 00:06:41.480 --> 00:06:46.800 build a house for him. Now that's a pretty remarkable thing, isn't it? 67 00:06:46.879 --> 00:06:53.670 Again, imagine someone sending you the lumber that you would need, the 68 00:06:53.790 --> 00:06:57.829 Mason's and the carpenters and everything that you would need to build your house. 69 00:06:59.110 --> 00:07:02.740 Pretty Nice gift. Well, this isn't, of course, just any old 70 00:07:02.860 --> 00:07:06.819 house. This is the king's palace, this is the place of his is 71 00:07:06.899 --> 00:07:14.420 dwelling, the establishment of his throne. And this isn't just anyone doing this. 72 00:07:14.500 --> 00:07:19.810 This is someone who doesn't really have any particular obligation to David. David 73 00:07:19.889 --> 00:07:26.490 doesn't call upon that David here isn't being served, I should say, by 74 00:07:26.610 --> 00:07:30.920 those who are under him, as they will and as a Solomon's the the 75 00:07:31.120 --> 00:07:35.800 king, the citizens of the Kingdom under Solomon will. But here we have 76 00:07:36.079 --> 00:07:42.680 hiram, the king of tire. This is not a hireum, is not 77 00:07:42.800 --> 00:07:48.069 a Jew. He's King of another empire, this region in Phoenicia, and 78 00:07:48.269 --> 00:07:54.470 nevertheless he comes to David and he gives him, or he sends to David 79 00:07:54.550 --> 00:08:00.379 these things for the establishment of his house. Now this is a neat thing, 80 00:08:00.579 --> 00:08:05.259 I suppose, but it's more than just kind of cool. It's important 81 00:08:05.420 --> 00:08:11.060 because it shows a sort of submission on Hiram's part to David as he serves 82 00:08:11.100 --> 00:08:18.769 him in this way. And that's important because God has been promising through Abraham 83 00:08:18.850 --> 00:08:22.769 and now in David, to not only give David a throne, but to 84 00:08:22.850 --> 00:08:28.120 give David a throne that sort of rises up above other thrones that other kings 85 00:08:28.240 --> 00:08:33.679 and people's will be subject to. The PHILISTINES are particularly in view, Philistines 86 00:08:33.799 --> 00:08:39.080 that Saul failed to conquer, but other nations come into view as well here, 87 00:08:39.720 --> 00:08:45.029 as we see with Hiram. Hiram is again going to do this. 88 00:08:45.309 --> 00:08:50.549 Is David's throne is further established under Solomon. Hireum will come and help Solomon 89 00:08:50.950 --> 00:08:56.179 build of the house there. In addition to that, in Solomon's time we 90 00:08:56.299 --> 00:09:03.940 have other kings and Queens coming to pay homage to him and show their respect 91 00:09:05.220 --> 00:09:09.649 and enjoy the glories of his kingdom. You remember the King Queen of Sheba, 92 00:09:09.809 --> 00:09:15.529 for example. So that's one way in which we see David's throne being 93 00:09:15.610 --> 00:09:20.009 established again, not only not just any throne, but this particularly Exalted Throne. 94 00:09:20.649 --> 00:09:26.879 It's being established as one king comes to serve a greater king, King 95 00:09:26.960 --> 00:09:31.879 David. The second way we see it happening is the actual establishment of this 96 00:09:33.159 --> 00:09:39.950 house in Jerusalem, this place where God has set his name. Ever since 97 00:09:39.070 --> 00:09:43.909 the exodus, God has been saying to his people, I will put my 98 00:09:45.149 --> 00:09:48.990 name in a particular place and I will rule there and I will dwell there. 99 00:09:50.029 --> 00:09:56.179 Finally, finally, when we get to David, that is beginning to 100 00:09:56.379 --> 00:10:01.899 happen, first with God's establishing this king here, this chosen king, and 101 00:10:01.940 --> 00:10:09.490 then later and with Solomon, as he establishes his God establish his own as 102 00:10:09.529 --> 00:10:13.690 his own throne. there. That the building of the temple. Here we 103 00:10:13.850 --> 00:10:22.399 see the ruler taking his place, taking his throne. For many years David 104 00:10:22.440 --> 00:10:28.240 has been on the run, a king without a place to sit, living 105 00:10:28.279 --> 00:10:35.000 in caves and hiding in the wilderness. But not now. Now he's coming 106 00:10:35.039 --> 00:10:41.269 and he sits down. Well, in addition to establishing his kingdom and in 107 00:10:41.549 --> 00:10:46.429 this particular place, in the house in particular, he's also establishing it in 108 00:10:46.470 --> 00:10:54.139 the growth of his family, David's. We see David being blessed with many 109 00:10:54.740 --> 00:11:00.179 sons and daughters. Now the chronicler here, in showing the great glories of 110 00:11:00.259 --> 00:11:07.490 David, explains why there are so many children so quickly, but it's a 111 00:11:07.889 --> 00:11:11.649 note worth taking a little aside on. That is, of course, verse 112 00:11:11.769 --> 00:11:18.129 three. David took more wives in Jerusalem and fathered more sons and daughters. 113 00:11:18.840 --> 00:11:26.440 We know that this, though just briefly mentioned here, is not a good 114 00:11:26.600 --> 00:11:31.399 thing. It's not a good thing and it will remind us that, although 115 00:11:31.440 --> 00:11:35.070 there is all this glory with David and all these good things he's doing, 116 00:11:35.230 --> 00:11:41.549 all the righteousness that he is modeling, at the end of the day we 117 00:11:41.669 --> 00:11:46.379 see here a little reminder that he is not by any means a perfect king. 118 00:11:46.419 --> 00:11:54.500 David took more wives in Jerusalem. He had already taken others and he 119 00:11:54.580 --> 00:11:58.539 takes more here. We know from other places in scripture that David also took 120 00:11:58.580 --> 00:12:03.009 concubines. This is problematic on all kinds of fronts, and we see the 121 00:12:03.090 --> 00:12:09.129 same sins in his son, which ultimately brings the downfall of the whole kingdom. 122 00:12:11.450 --> 00:12:16.440 I want to finish this aside by just mentioning two things. First, 123 00:12:16.440 --> 00:12:22.840 a quote from Deuteronomy and then one from Matthew Henry. Deuteronomy seventeen. Seventeen 124 00:12:22.399 --> 00:12:28.159 specifically says that when the king leads Israel, he is not to acquire for 125 00:12:28.240 --> 00:12:35.070 himself many wives. Samuel told this to Saul, the previous king, specifically 126 00:12:35.710 --> 00:12:39.710 told him, read him these things and even had him write them down. 127 00:12:41.389 --> 00:12:48.580 No doubt David knew these things as well and is being disobedient. Here an 128 00:12:48.659 --> 00:12:54.100 extended quote from Matthew Henry that I think makes this point well. Matthew Henry 129 00:12:54.179 --> 00:13:00.610 writes, shall we praise David for this, this taking many wives and concubines? 130 00:13:00.690 --> 00:13:07.129 Henry answers we praise him not. We justify him not. Nor can 131 00:13:07.169 --> 00:13:13.639 we scarcely excuse him. The Bad Example of the Patriarchs might make him think 132 00:13:13.679 --> 00:13:16.519 that there was no harm in it and he might hope it would strengthen his 133 00:13:16.639 --> 00:13:24.399 interest by multiplying his alliances and increasing the royal family. Happy is the man 134 00:13:24.799 --> 00:13:28.830 that has his quiver full of these arrows. Henry writes, quoting proverbs. 135 00:13:31.429 --> 00:13:35.509 But one vine by the side of the house, with the blessing of God, 136 00:13:35.710 --> 00:13:41.190 may send bows to the sea and branches to the rivers. Adam by 137 00:13:41.309 --> 00:13:46.340 one wife peopled the world and Noah repeopled it. David had many wives, 138 00:13:46.419 --> 00:13:50.299 and yet that did not keep him from coveting his neighbor's wife and defiling her. 139 00:13:52.139 --> 00:13:58.289 For men that have once broken the fence will wander endlessly. When we 140 00:13:58.409 --> 00:14:03.570 think of Henry's point here and we consider the examples, the example of David, 141 00:14:03.610 --> 00:14:07.690 the example of the Patriarchs, the fall out with Solomon, we see 142 00:14:07.769 --> 00:14:13.519 here that, though the chronicler mentions it and we certainly shouldn't praise him for 143 00:14:13.720 --> 00:14:18.080 it, and the chronicler offers no praise here, I think it's mostly just 144 00:14:18.200 --> 00:14:26.950 an explanation for how quickly his house is growing. As I mention, though, 145 00:14:26.070 --> 00:14:31.549 we see this contrast with Saul, this great contrast which shows us God's 146 00:14:31.590 --> 00:14:37.590 blessing on David. There is also a great contrast between the shadow and the 147 00:14:37.710 --> 00:14:45.299 reality, between David and Christ. Let's consider a few verses about the establishment 148 00:14:45.419 --> 00:14:50.379 of God, of the of Jesus, on His throne and his authority. 149 00:14:52.970 --> 00:14:58.730 First from the book of Ephesians, Chapter One, Ephesians one versus twenty through 150 00:14:58.809 --> 00:15:05.690 twenty three. Listen to the strength with which Paul speaks about our Lord in 151 00:15:05.850 --> 00:15:13.919 his authority here. So Ephesians one verse twenty through twenty three, that he 152 00:15:13.039 --> 00:15:16.799 worked in Christ, when he raised him from the dead and seated him at 153 00:15:16.879 --> 00:15:22.509 his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and 154 00:15:22.789 --> 00:15:28.190 power and Dominion and above every name that is named, not only in this 155 00:15:28.429 --> 00:15:33.110 age but also in the one to come, and he put all things under 156 00:15:33.149 --> 00:15:35.779 his feet and gave him as head over all things, to his church, 157 00:15:35.860 --> 00:15:41.980 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all. 158 00:15:43.860 --> 00:15:48.179 Here the way that Paul is speaking here go back to David. We have 159 00:15:48.259 --> 00:15:56.090 David ascending to his throne in Jerusalem, this particular place, and we have 160 00:15:56.450 --> 00:16:00.409 one king, a great king, a rich king, helping him out. 161 00:16:00.529 --> 00:16:06.639 But consider that in comparison to Christ, who is seated at the right hand, 162 00:16:06.720 --> 00:16:10.000 as we say, in the creed of God, the Father, Almighty 163 00:16:10.679 --> 00:16:17.200 and heavenly places, far above all rule and of already and power and Dominion 164 00:16:17.279 --> 00:16:21.710 and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also 165 00:16:21.750 --> 00:16:23.590 in the age to come. Paul just keeps adding it and adding it and 166 00:16:23.669 --> 00:16:29.389 adding it as far and as high as you possibly can. Think Christ's authority 167 00:16:29.509 --> 00:16:33.940 extends his rule and his power and his dominion. It's farther than that. 168 00:16:37.019 --> 00:16:41.659 Christ is in his exaltation. He put all things under his feet and gave 169 00:16:41.700 --> 00:16:47.730 him his head over all things to the church. And notice what Paul saying. 170 00:16:47.850 --> 00:16:52.769 He says this isn't some future thing, this is now. Jesus Christ 171 00:16:52.850 --> 00:16:59.850 is ruling and reigning now. We read the same idea in Philippians. To 172 00:17:00.129 --> 00:17:04.279 remember that passage where we read about the great humility, Humilia, humility, 173 00:17:04.759 --> 00:17:10.480 of Christ, his humiliation here on the earth and becoming a form and take 174 00:17:10.839 --> 00:17:15.630 becoming a servant, taking on the form of a man, humbling himself, 175 00:17:15.750 --> 00:17:22.750 becoming obedient even under death, death on a cross, so that God would 176 00:17:22.750 --> 00:17:27.029 glorify him and raise him and exalt him, so that every knee, every 177 00:17:27.029 --> 00:17:36.099 knee, would bow to him, our savior. Throughout the New Testament we 178 00:17:36.460 --> 00:17:42.500 read that Jesus is king and he is so from beginning to end of his 179 00:17:42.660 --> 00:17:49.089 ministry. This is often forgotten. A lot of times we think about Jesus 180 00:17:49.410 --> 00:17:55.329 at the end. For example, in revelation six fifteen through seventeen, we 181 00:17:55.450 --> 00:18:00.720 read about the kings of the earth hiding themselves, calling for the rocks to 182 00:18:00.839 --> 00:18:07.799 fall on them because of the judgment of King Jesus. This is great submission 183 00:18:07.640 --> 00:18:11.950 great fear. And then there are the kings who have been saved by His 184 00:18:12.150 --> 00:18:22.269 grace, who come into the presence of God with this great procession. I'll 185 00:18:22.309 --> 00:18:27.819 read you the verse in Revelation Twenty One, revelation Twente, twenty two through 186 00:18:27.900 --> 00:18:33.259 twenty four, and I saw no temple in the city, for it's Temple 187 00:18:33.380 --> 00:18:37.619 is the Lord, God, the Almighty and the lamb. And the city 188 00:18:37.779 --> 00:18:41.650 has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory 189 00:18:41.769 --> 00:18:47.809 of God gives it light, and its lamp is the lamb. By its 190 00:18:47.849 --> 00:18:52.009 light will the nation's walk and the Kings of the earth will bring their glory 191 00:18:52.170 --> 00:18:57.200 into it. The lamb seated on the throne, the kings of the earth, 192 00:18:57.319 --> 00:19:03.160 like Hiram of tire, coming in submission, in Godly, holy submission. 193 00:19:03.960 --> 00:19:07.759 The picture given in revelation at the end of days is this great picture 194 00:19:08.079 --> 00:19:12.430 of Jesus ruling and reigning. But he does it even now as well, 195 00:19:12.589 --> 00:19:21.069 we are reminded. Consider Jesus House, for example. Do you remember what 196 00:19:21.150 --> 00:19:25.740 he says? And John, to nineteen through twenty two, destroy this temple 197 00:19:25.779 --> 00:19:29.819 and in three days I will raise it up again. And John tells us 198 00:19:29.819 --> 00:19:37.220 there that he's speaking about his body his resurrection, the Temple of God Jesus? 199 00:19:37.380 --> 00:19:41.490 Is that the the Temple of God, God's own house, his palace, 200 00:19:41.609 --> 00:19:48.329 so to speak. This Jesus Ray will um raise up in his resurrection. 201 00:19:51.170 --> 00:19:55.880 This is so important to understand because people will always press you. Where 202 00:19:56.079 --> 00:20:00.519 is the glory now? Where is the king reigning now? You say he's 203 00:20:00.519 --> 00:20:04.119 established on his throne even greater than King David, but I don't see it. 204 00:20:06.279 --> 00:20:08.789 I see his people persecuted, I see his people falling into sin, 205 00:20:08.990 --> 00:20:15.630 I see dissension and division, I see people filled with despair and hopelessness and 206 00:20:15.990 --> 00:20:22.859 anxieties. Where is your king? Where is the glory? Looking at the 207 00:20:22.980 --> 00:20:29.220 bunch of you and comparing it with David and all of Israel singing praises and 208 00:20:29.539 --> 00:20:33.660 him seated on his throne with great wood and gold and all the rest, 209 00:20:33.700 --> 00:20:41.009 we don't seem all that impressive in our rented facility and whatnot. But what 210 00:20:41.130 --> 00:20:48.529 does the Bible say? It says that he rules even now. Do you 211 00:20:48.569 --> 00:20:56.559 remember what Jesus said in his command to the disciples the end of Mathrow? 212 00:20:57.000 --> 00:21:03.079 All Authority in Heaven and an earth has been given to me. All Authority 213 00:21:03.910 --> 00:21:08.349 in Heaven and on Earth has been given to me. Go, therefore and 214 00:21:08.470 --> 00:21:19.220 make disciples of all nations. This one verse helps us to understand the way 215 00:21:19.460 --> 00:21:25.220 in which the glory is coming. Now it comes in the same way Jesus 216 00:21:25.339 --> 00:21:30.220 came, in a way that's veiled, in a way that's marked by grace. 217 00:21:30.259 --> 00:21:41.210 Jesus doesn't send his disciples out with swords and horses and armament. He 218 00:21:41.369 --> 00:21:48.559 sends them out with voices and his word and says, preach, baptize, 219 00:21:49.880 --> 00:21:56.599 make disciples. The world says, where's the glory in that? Where's your 220 00:21:56.720 --> 00:22:03.789 hope in that? But we know the deep loyalty that comes to the king 221 00:22:03.750 --> 00:22:07.509 when the spirit of God works in our hearts and causes us to bend the 222 00:22:07.589 --> 00:22:15.940 knee, not in fear but in deep love. We know how extensive the 223 00:22:15.059 --> 00:22:22.460 empire of Jesus is because it penetrates into every household and kingdom throughout the world, 224 00:22:22.500 --> 00:22:27.700 all languages and people and tribes and tongues and nations, sometimes hidden away, 225 00:22:27.940 --> 00:22:36.009 and prisons and sellers, sometimes openly, and great places and buildings. 226 00:22:37.210 --> 00:22:44.319 But Jesus is ultimately right now. He's ultimately about the hearts he owns, 227 00:22:44.400 --> 00:22:48.160 all the lands he owns, all the places he is saving a people for 228 00:22:48.240 --> 00:22:56.039 himself, he is increasing his house and he always does it righteously. Or 229 00:22:56.079 --> 00:23:00.789 David and the Patriarchs and many were always trying to find some way to add 230 00:23:02.230 --> 00:23:07.150 to God's blessing or to secure God's blessing beyond God just giving it to them. 231 00:23:07.230 --> 00:23:12.140 It never happened with Jesus. Jesus always did his work perfectly and in 232 00:23:12.220 --> 00:23:17.220 accordance with the word of God and because of that, when he went to 233 00:23:17.460 --> 00:23:22.980 his death, he was able to save a people for himself. He was 234 00:23:22.059 --> 00:23:26.059 able to build a house for himself, to grow a house, to create 235 00:23:26.170 --> 00:23:36.650 a family that would be everlasting, that would be perfect. It's important to 236 00:23:36.809 --> 00:23:42.599 remember that the glory and the establishment of Jesus's kingdom doesn't just come at the 237 00:23:42.680 --> 00:23:48.599 end. Listen to Jesus's own words and John Twelve when he says and I, 238 00:23:48.920 --> 00:23:52.599 when I am lifted up from the Earth, will draw all people to 239 00:23:52.720 --> 00:23:59.589 myself. Now, when you hear that you probably think of the ascension, 240 00:24:00.670 --> 00:24:06.829 but listen to what Jesus says in the next verse or or what John Says 241 00:24:06.869 --> 00:24:11.059 in the next verse. He said this, when I'm lifted up from the 242 00:24:11.140 --> 00:24:15.900 Earth, will draw all people to myself. He said this to show by 243 00:24:17.099 --> 00:24:23.970 what kind of death he was going to die. There's this very ironic way 244 00:24:25.089 --> 00:24:29.089 in which the scriptures speak, in which Jesus, as he's lifted up on 245 00:24:29.170 --> 00:24:36.650 the cross, is in some ways lifted up to his throne, because it's 246 00:24:36.690 --> 00:24:41.480 there that he conquers sin and death, it's there that he gains victory over 247 00:24:41.559 --> 00:24:45.759 the grave, it's there that he gains this people to himself. As Jesus 248 00:24:45.839 --> 00:24:49.319 says, when I'm lifted up from the Earth, I will draw all people 249 00:24:49.440 --> 00:24:55.190 to myself. The kings of this world, the and the leaders of this 250 00:24:55.349 --> 00:25:00.230 world, thought they had Jesus, they had Jesus in a box, they 251 00:25:00.269 --> 00:25:06.150 had him done with, they had him dead. But Jesus says that in 252 00:25:06.430 --> 00:25:14.059 the cross that he goes to he doesn't merely die, he conquers, he 253 00:25:14.660 --> 00:25:21.970 rules, he gains victory. Listen to how Calvin puts it. There is 254 00:25:22.089 --> 00:25:29.410 no tribunal so magnificent, no throne so stately, no show of triumph so 255 00:25:29.650 --> 00:25:36.839 distinguished, no chariot so elevated as the Cross on which Christ has subdued death 256 00:25:37.519 --> 00:25:41.960 and the devil. This is so important for us to remember because when the 257 00:25:42.000 --> 00:25:47.839 world says where's the glory? Where's the establishments of the Kingdom? When your 258 00:25:47.880 --> 00:25:53.950 own heart is filled with discouragement about your sins, fear of death, wondering 259 00:25:55.109 --> 00:26:00.910 about where the victory is, then we are called to look to the cross, 260 00:26:02.430 --> 00:26:08.019 the establishment of Jesus's rule. And this is good because it means that 261 00:26:08.180 --> 00:26:15.900 Jesus, before he comes in glory, comes in grace and it be means 262 00:26:15.980 --> 00:26:22.410 that we, the ungodly Philistines, will not die but will be saved by 263 00:26:22.529 --> 00:26:30.210 His grace. And so when you consider this picture, when you consider these 264 00:26:30.529 --> 00:26:37.400 events in the Old Testament, this establishment of David on his throne, remember 265 00:26:37.519 --> 00:26:44.279 Jesus going to the Cross, the victories that he achieved there. For you 266 00:26:45.799 --> 00:26:51.069 be hopeful about the glory to come and thankful for the grace that is now. 267 00:26:52.670 --> 00:26:56.549 And I promise you that when you consider these things, when you put 268 00:26:56.589 --> 00:27:03.339 your faith and your hope, your real faith, your deep faith and an 269 00:27:03.380 --> 00:27:10.339 everlasting hope in Jesus and his work on the cross, you'll find discouragement about 270 00:27:10.380 --> 00:27:15.579 things in this world begin to lift a little bit. You'll begin to find 271 00:27:15.700 --> 00:27:21.049 that your sins that seem so strong don't seem quite so strong any more. 272 00:27:22.369 --> 00:27:29.650 You'll find that fears about death, begin to subdue knowing that our savior has 273 00:27:29.769 --> 00:27:37.279 conquered death itself. When you think about your life in this world, a 274 00:27:37.759 --> 00:27:42.960 life in exile, and his pilgrimage, pilgrims, yes, but as citizens 275 00:27:44.039 --> 00:27:48.950 of the Kingdom of God nevertheless, and as those who are ruled and subdued 276 00:27:48.069 --> 00:27:56.150 by Jesus himself and His grace, be happy, be of good cheer and 277 00:27:56.309 --> 00:28:03.740 have confidence that your king is ruling and reigning for you. Let us pray
